My 60 plus years wiring gives me reason enough to tease a little. As with most circuits this one can be center fed or fed from the opposite end shown.

Yeah, but explain how that works to homeowners.

@@brettleybuilt I lived for over 30 years in the Adirondack mountains of NY. For the better part of that period the only electrical inspections required were for the service. I don't know of any area of the country today that doesn't have to put up with the NEC BS. My point is there is no reason a homeowner would be "legally" wiring?
@nathankarnes1782 Жыл бұрын
@@jackriley5974 In the state of Wisconsin homeowners can still legally do any wiring on their own property. There may be exceptions in different municipalities. The electrical utilities typicall will not hook up to a meter socket not at least signed off by a master electrician however. All wiring would likely need to be inspected...if you pulled a permit.

I noticed you had your neutral and ground wires connected together at the switch box. I thought this box was going to be a sub-panel and that they would have to be separated. Would this have worked if you separated them? Does it make a difference if you are wiring more than a 3 way switch ?

Seeking some advice. I have a set of outdoor lights that can be control at 4 locations in my home. I believe it is a 3-4-4-3 circuit. One day I noticed the lights on and when I attempted to turn off, they would not respond at any location. They will turn off if I stop the switch at what would be the half way point of the toggle switch. I " assume " one of the 4 switches has gone bad. Looking for a method to discover which one of the switches is bad. If you would consider this as the likely problem. Thanks for your feedback.
@brettleybuilt Жыл бұрын
You could take the face plates off from each switch, and CAREFULLY, use a voltmeter to ensure each screw has voltage when it is supposed to have voltage. If a screw doesn't show around 120V when it should, that switch is most likely the bad switch.

What do you use 4 way switch for, because this example was a 3 way switch, correct? Pardon me but im learning, thanks for the videos

They call it a four way circuit and it is used to control lights from three or more locations.

Thanks for the video but stuck with something. Existing home...can turn off lights in 4 places which means 5 way or 4 switches. What I am getting is...do 2.. 3 ways on the end and 2... 4 ways in the middle. I am confused on how do I know where my ends and middle are? I have 1 swtich that has to be up for all the other switches work so my guess is that is an end. No idea on how to figure out the other end. Its 3 light switches up stairs and 1 down. The one that has to be in the up position is the upstairs middle.
@brettleybuilt9 ай бұрын
To find the ends, turn off the power at the breaker, remove the switch covers, and look at the switches. The 4 way switches will be the middle switches, and the two three ways switches will be your ends.

Do you use ring circuits for sockets in the US or always radial circuits?

If I had a 4 way switch controlling two light fixtures, How would I wire that?
@brettleybuilt Жыл бұрын
It would be just like the setup I showed, but then you would wire the two lights together with a 14-2 wire. Both lights would still have to come on and go off at the same time.

Exactly the video I’ve been looking for. Is that 2-3 ways and 2-4 way switches?
@brettleybuilt2 жыл бұрын
Yes. You always have to have a 3 way switch at each end, but you can have as many 4 way switches as you need in between.

Thank you so much for the reply. I don’t think anyone has ever replied to one of my comments before so I really appreciate you getting back to me. I have 3 switches up stairs for my hall lights but sometimes I go downstairs forgetting to turn them off so be very convenient to have a switch at bottom of my stairs. Thought this was the way to do it but was unsure. Thanks again! 🙏🏽

@@xsandmanx187 Yes, you would need a 4 way circuit as you would have a switch at the bottom of the stairs that would be connected to the same circuit as the other switches upstairs to control the lights.

The gauge number, the number of conductors, then WG, meaning with ground. So the wires I used were 14-2WG and 14-3WG.
