I have seen the sign BISEXUAL as bent CL: 2 with dominant hand as the person whose orientation is in question and CL: 2 with the weak hand as the BI part of the BISEXUALITY. This video is filled with necessary information and is handled in a professional manner. I really appreciate you taking the time to make this very important video on a subject not frequently discussed.. I found it very helpful, but I must submit that I am having much trouble trying to read the green script! I am a beginner in ASL and trying to watch your hands and body movements at the same time as reading the script was extremely hard for me. I had to stop and start many times to grasp what you were teaching.. I know I came late to the class , but in the interest of clarity I would propose having white letters on a dark background or black letters on a white background..thank you for sharing your knowledge and I will practice this as much as possible so it will help me communicate with my doctors better..as she knows ASL but I am a beginner, so I have to write most things on my white board, which is very slow and tedious..anything I learn from you will be a great help.

The "old fashion" sign for homosexual is actually now a slur and should be avoided. And the second sign for transgender is the one that is preferred. The first sign thats like sex that flips over is more an emphasis on a medical/biological view where the 2nd sign is more about identity. Ive also seen the same handshape but on the nose for "orgasm".

In Arizona I've seen "orgasm" signed similarly to "bug"...some bend the V handshape on the nose once, some twice. I have generally seen "bi" spelled out. One Deaf signer in AZ signs lesbian as you do, but also signs the L with the thumb on the chin for "butch lesbian" and the first finger on the chin for "femme lesbian." Great vlog, as always!

I agree with eireencullen. In Los Angeles area, I see the sign similar to bug for orgasm. The thumb doesn't touch the nose, all three fingers curl in and the hand moves up and back so the the palm is facing out at eye level. Great video. Always good to see more signs being put out there to learn from!

Hi! Here to bring in a LGBT+ Deaf perspective. The second sign for "transgender" is the commonly used/accepted one as the "sex change"-looking version is considered offensive.. But it could also mean "transsexual." Keep in mind that "transgender" and "transsexual" are not the same thing and trans people may identify differently. I think "transgender" is the safest one to stick to while interpreting. The "old fashioned" sign you cited for "homosexual" nowadays means "queer," which is a reclaimed slur that some LGBT+ signers may choose to use. Be very careful with this one, because when done by a non-LGBT+ person, it can mean "f*g."

Yes, the new sign for transgender is quite beautiful imo. The thumb of the dominant hand is at the breastbone, the hand is closed in CL:0 (flat). The fingers then open in succession beginning from the pinky as the palm turns to face the dominant side as the fingers close again to a CL:0 (flat) on the non dominant side. Thumb stays fixed on the breastbone. It's the same motion as BEAUTIFUL or ALTOGETHER. Most people finger spell G-A-Y or L-E-S-B-I-A-N if not in the culture. Blessings. 🙏🏻

For GAY, I’ve typically seen it fingerspelled. For LESBIAN rather than the middle of the L handshape tapping on the chin the tip of your pointer finger taps there. For QUEER I’ve often seen RAINBOW or fingerspelled. BISEXUAL I’ve seen just fingerspelled B-I. The signs for GAY, LESBIAN, and BISEXUAL have changed to eliminate any potential derogatory associations with the concepts. These are more recent signs I learned from a Deaf woman in the LGBT+ community. Hope that helps!

Thanks for posting! TransGENDER is the sign of turning what one feels is on the inside, to the outside. (ie: What other comments have been calling "a bud") TransSEXUAL is a biological term and is the switching of palm orientation during the movement of the sign "sex". Bisexual, in my area, is NOT signed like switching between two fingers. It looks promiscuous. Either spell it, spell "BI", or expand to sign: person, romantically prefers either men/ women.

One of our Song Signers, an interpreter and member of the D.C., has used the ASL narrative tradition to conceptually translate a song that appropriately incorporates a number of signs you have shown. Hi! I really enjoy your videos. You may or may not find this useful or perhaps just interesting. A friend of mine signs "pimp" on the shoulder like boss or captain, but initialized with the P shape. This is something he's used in a more comedic context to describe himself, and it's entirely possible he made it up. lol But it does make sense. Maybe if you wanted to establish it during an interpretation with a fingerspelling the first time and shorten it to this sign from then on you could.

Thanks for comment ;o) Will add that to my mental files ;o) I think it is more appropriate as an interpreter to Fingerspell that word since it fits the "short words, fingerspell" rule, (less than 5) and is likely a created sign that is not in standard use. Your original sign for TRANS (the variation of the SEX sign) is actual an old sign for transgender that is actually offensive to most people in the trans community now as it means, literally "sex-change" The sign at the chest is the appropriate sign that I've seen most people use who are both Deaf and trans. I've also seen many people just fs B-I for bisexual but I've seen the sign you used as more of an expansion :]

Hi! In the Settings dial on the lower R corner of youtube vids you can adjust the speed of the video. I can't slow it down when signing, but you can slow it down when viewing. Hope that helps ;o) SH

One sign I've seen for bi-sexual is the sign for 'sex' but with a bent V handshape. Sort of like saying 'double sexed'. I've only seen it here in the San Francisco Bay area though.

Hi! Sorry you found that offensive. I just watched a CNN series called "The 80's" ....on Netflix. It stated that homosexual men reported having between 500 and 1000 partners during the 80's AIDS epidemic. This is self-reported. Interpreters interpret this kind of material so it is not outside of normal material an interpreter would encounter in an interpreting situation. Thanks for your comment!

You are getting you sexuality facts from statistics from the 80s? AIDS was a new virus back then and the medical community knew very little about it. That was almost 40 YEARS AGO! One role of the interpreter is to stay current and relevant. management of the virus has come light years since the 80s! Perhaps "she had UNPROTECTED sex with 1000 partners" might be a little less offensive...I guess. I enjoy your channel. You address good topics and Im usually not rude , but a person teaching about sexuality, or a certified interpreter interpreting about sexuality without current facts is spreading misinformation. How does that help your client?

Hi! I think we are on different thought lines...this video is not a teaching video about sexuality. This video is a set of examples of signs in use and ways to interpret content so that interpreters are more prepared for this content. It is entirely within the scope of possibility for this CNN documentary to show up in a HS class setting today. I have absolutely had that come up when interpreting. You may not agree with that content, but it is part of sign usage both years ago, and today. Maybe you can watch and see if it comes up in another setting...the sign for promiscuous in both heterosexual and homosexual contexts and also in relation to STDs. For example, Zika is a current sexually transmitted virus, the spread of which can be exacerbated by having multiple partners. Condom use or not is not the point of this section...the sign usage is the focus. Thanks again for posting your thoughts! Great to discuss and analyze sign choices!!! SH

I was not criticizing you sign choices, you are an awesome signer.... like you said, it was just the context in which you placed the sign for promiscuous.
