Never under estimate your enemy, the saying goes. You can bet if real, Russia will work with China to mechanize and manufacture this process to its full realization. And if so, Russia will have turned the tables on the west. While the US wasn't looking, Russia has surprised the world and technically, turned the tables on the US. We know that both were working on x-ray light sources and now we are wondering if that is part of this revelation? Russia graduates as many STEM students as the US with less than half the population. Russia has always been strong in the theoretical sciences, math, and physics. We saw that at play when Russia produced Sputnik and led the space race for some time. We are seeing Russia's technology skills in their development of military weaponry. Russia was first with hypersonic missiles, developed advanced drones, succeeded in electronic warfare, and rapid adaption to the needs of war as exhibited by their ability to meet war conditions in Ukraine. Russia has also developed a nuclear cruise missile that can fly anywhere in the world and it has a nuclear torpedo said capable of causing tsunami waves that would drown coastal cities, it's nuclear submarines are world class. Remember also that the International Space Station owes its success to Russia. Russian rocket engines propelled all of the space station modules into orbit and the control module was of Russian design. Russian fighter jets and jet engines are world class and it has the world's only nuclear icebreakers. One wonders if some of these advances, like the semiconductor sector are subjects of discussion with Putin's visit to China's Xi Jinping today. Biden's administration must truly be worried now that their sanctions and restrictions may be for naught.

Poor ASML has a market capitalization of $300 billion - more than all Gazprom, Rosneft, and Rostec together. Whole Russian „semiconductor“ market in 2023 is estimated at about $2-3 billion: ten times less than that of ASML. Russia is returning into the middle age.

Russia is re-industrializing so rapidly it's breathtaking to watch in real time. The extreme depth of Russian technological capability and know how is equally exciting. I guess we have the hubris and stupidity of the west to thank for Russia's resurgence and China's industrial supremacy. Slava Rossiya and may China be a better steward of it's superpower status.
@ThomasTomiczek5 ай бұрын
Sanctions. Stupid people think you can sanction the large technological block that is Russia/China - but all the sanctions do it make it celar they must stand independent. Add India to the mix and a lot of other smaller countries and - you get a disaster in the making. But hey, Russia stands isolated and is just "a gas station masquerading as a country". 4000 years ago, Sun Tsu in "The Art of War" wrote - know your enemy better than yourself and you do not have to fear the outcome of a thousand battles. Well, the west prefers not to know their enemy, so battles get lost. Plenty of them.

@Teney19943 ай бұрын
They have indeed produced a lithography plant (not yet capable of mass semi-conductior production, as of 1 month ago) but it's at 350nm. That is at the level of year 2000 (earliest was 1996 or 97). They can however produce 65nm independently (as far as I know) at the minimum if we exclude lithography. There is some use to 350nm lithography, but their own semi-conductior plants don't use that kind of range, they start at 250nm and below. If you want a source, just Google "Russia 350nm lithography" and you'll get many sources, it's the rosatom research group. They might really get to a point where they will be able to be independent, but even the goal of 14nm chips until 2030 seems to be far stretched, as far as I've read. As for lithography, they want to get to 65nm until 2027, which is wild considering they have just produced 350nm.

Even if there is research that may achieve comparable results, that is not the same thing as having commercially viable lithography machines. Even if top commercial results are achieved, there is no way to duplicate what TSMC does at cost effective level. End result would be more expensive chips that can only be paid for by having captive home market.

Russia will not develop chip making machines alone. I say chip making machines and not EUV because there must be other ways of creating chip making machines that is not EUV. Russia and China not only enjoys a military relationship but also a joint development one. Russia with China can co-operate and innovate other forms of chips making machines.

Russia is its own supply chain... the only nation in the world that can build fighter planes from it own supplies. ie they have all the materials and factories to do it... the west does not have a supply chain, hence the lack of products in most suppliers... @tommymichalski99894 ай бұрын
while theoretically it would be possible for Russia to develop advanced semiconductor technology, the practical, economic, and geopolitical barriers make it highly unlikely that they could compete on the same level as established players like ASML. The semiconductor industry's reliance on trusted, proven technology, along with stringent regulatory controls and the strategic importance of this sector, means that established dynamics are unlikely to change significantly in the near future. So put another 20 years on top before any major company is going to consider Russia as a reliable partner.

Considering the number of innovations made in this technology through serendipity Russia's approach is very intelligent as it can easily lead to new innovations that the west will have difficulty duplicating. I think Russia and China could diverge technologically from the west thereby and begin creating incompatible technologies. There is a tendency to forget how new these technologies really are. If any country were to begin the process of innovation again (that is to say discovering instead of refining) the results could be spectacular.

Try again plz. Even if Russia could ever produce the same quality as ASML or let say even better. Those machines cost 350.000.000 euro. The customers of those machines are not some average Joe's. Intel, Nvidia, Samsung or TSMC they never going to buy some Russian machine. Russia has no chance besides producing some chips for their domestic market or arms industry. Don't forget that the EU in a way controles the world. So if they say we don't want any Russian/Chinese chips in our infrastructure (like with Huawei network infrastructure) the rest of the world follows (like with mandatory usb C chargers). So your point is only valid in free market space. Remember those machines are big printers, and the prints are not some cheap papers. But papers with on average R&D costs of 15 billion. So additional 40 times the price of the machine to spit some high end chips out. And about 40 years later when people start to forget how unreliable partner Russia is.
