The way Blizzard retconned the hell out of the Scarlet Crusade was always so annoying to me. Originally Scarlet Crusade was founded by several members like Alexandros Mograine, Saidan Dathrohan (the real one), Taelan Fordring, General Abbendis, etc. And they were initially a pretty heroic faction albeit a bit overzealous (which was understandable considering what they went through and their circumstances). They became the main bastion of the Lordearon's resistance after the fall of Garithoses faction, the "New Alliance" in FT. And the Scalet Crusade was doing pretty good initially despite their over zealotry around the vanilla WoW timeline. They were allied with the Stormwind-led Alliance and were almost on the verge of retaking Lordaeron from the forsaken (Alexandros with Ashbringer was a great force multiplier). And it was at this point that Saidan got killed and replaced by Balnazzar thus eventually leading Balnazzar in the guise of Saidan to manipulate Renault Mograine into assassinating his own father. It is at this point the reshuffling of the Scarlet Crusade leadership at the tail end of the Vanilla WoW period is where things start to go bad for the Scarlet Crusade. When they became the crazy radical extremists. And it was a great tragedy what became of them despite their noble origins. However, Blizzard later changed the timeline and story/lore for the Scarlet Crusade by making it so that Scarlet Crusade was only ever formed after the death/murder of Alexandros by Saidan (Balnazzar). Essentially erasing their noble origins/history and making it so that they were a bunch of radical xenophobic nutjobs from the very beginning. They essentially erased all the nuance from an interesting and well-developed grey faction. And made the Scarlet Crusade just another doomsday cult in a world utterly full of them. Scarlet Crusade had such great potential for an interesting morally grey story but Blizzard utterly wasted them.
@rahn452 жыл бұрын
I think most people who played WC3 empathized with the Scarlet Crusade, and really would come to the conclusion that their paranoia was completely justified; you know since a cult of death infiltrated their kingdom and brought ruin to it. In a lot of ways they were an embodiment of Arthas' will back in Stratholme: That what they were doing was a necessary evil. If the lore had went down a different path I imagine we could hear stories of how the former members of the Silver Hand lamented that they did not listen to Arthas at the time, perhaps even resenting Uther's choice to abandon the prince; and that the loss of Lorderon and their prince was ultimately their fault. As such, their resolve is tempered by how deep their failure ran; that it took so much from them all. Mercy killing each other would make all the more sense to the Scarlet Crusade, especially since they got to see what being turned into undead did to Arthas: Turned into a weapon against your own people.

To be Fair, Tirion Fordring saved the blackrock orc Eitrigg, as an honorbound favor when Eitrigg saved him first. That's how he actually got excommunicated in the first place. They fought at first but after the tower collapsed, Eitrigg felt that leaving him to suffocate under the rubble would simply leave a bad taste in his mouth, being an extremely oldschool noble savage archetype. So he pulled him out. Once Tirion came to and understood what the old Orc had done, he instantly felt he was indebted to him. Once Eitrigg got captured by the other humans and was about to be executed at Stratholme, Thrall, his warriors and Tirion swooped in and saved him, for which he got excommunicated from the Paladin order and was stripped of his Light. Eitrigg proclaimed Tirion as his brother by honor. The two have been friends until Tirion died. And since, Eitrigg has always been diplomatic when it comes to the Alliance and especially humans, seeing that they can be just as honorable as any Orc. It's no grand story of glorious combat, but it's a pretty wholesome tale of an Orc ( a BLACKROCK Orc at that) and a Human finding true bromance in a time where the two races were at each other's throats, right after Orgrim's Horde was shattered. And as a Horde, honor is above all else, and Tirion will always be among the most awesome humans in Warcraft lore. EDIT - 23:10 Actually, the Forsaken are literally the same citizens of Lordaeron. McConnell is incorrect, it isn't usually Warriors that graduate into Paladins it's Priests. Canonical lore for Paladins: Priests figured out how to wear plate while fighting the Scourge. Anduin: Human Priest who became a Paladin. Lady Liadrin: Blood Elf Priest who became a Paladin. Yrel: Draenei Priest who became a Paladin. Delas Moonfang: Night Elf Priest who became a Paladin. 27:20 I believe for the member of the scarlet crusade, since many of them were former veterans of the second war, a war which they fought together with dwarves and high elves against the orcs, it definetly makes perfect sense for them to having member or being friends with high elves and dwarves, and not having any predjudice against those races. Scarlet crusaders hate orcs, trolls, and whatever brutal war-oriented race that is part of the horde, because in the past said races invaded and ravaged their home. And they hate the undead and the scourge, cause their home was destroyed and stolen by these. The Hall of Champions featuring members of other races like an high elf mage, and high elf ranger, and a dwarf paladin, is not a plothole. If anything, it's the hate that the scarlet crusade is supposed to harbors towards any race outside of human (or even for any living thing outside of the members of the crusade) that is heavily exagerated and unjustified to a point of bad writing.

Examples like Tyrande being both Hunter and Druid or Thrall being both a Warrior and Shaman. Lore wise Alexandros was training to be a priest in the monastery and later became a Paladin. This is information is in game. It felt cringy, when I saw Asmongolds viewers reinforcing the idea that he was a Warrior. Just because someone learns martial training does not mean they are a warrior. Unless we just go along with the idea there are two classes, Mage and Warrior? Even though Wiki states Mograine is a paladin (formerly), myself playing as a paladin since vanilla, and considering it my favoruite hero since WC3, I always thought Mograine was a warrior and I COMPLETELY AGREE with Asmon, even with my friends over the years nobody even questioned that. If you all remember the scene in CoT (Durnholde) Mograine simply shows the dark artifact to his friends, he DOES NOT USE any kind of holy magic on it, when his buddies began to "transmute?" by attacking it with smite and judgement. I agree with Mc that Paladins are graduated warriors, even more, they combine the warrior and the priest to become a hybrid class. During the crusades in the middle ages, paladins were considered the warrior elite, it was very famous for them to dual-wield. The class itself was so broken on vanilla release that Blizz had to nerf it, it became a garbage afterwards but we still love it... well I can understand, how can you balance an ascended mind, with melee/ranged holy and material powers/skills that can heal and raise the dead, uses plate and all types of armor, act as a healer, tank and a dps, c'mon? This is simply the endgame of warrior evolution and not only, Cleric/Priest and Warrior in one, Templars/Paladins/Crusaders there you have it. Arthas did nothing wrong. Peace :D P.S. Before ultimately rolling to a paladin, i had a holy priest at level 40 and a paladin used intervention on me in RFD...

Hell, they could have made paladins a spec for warrior and no one would have batted an eye lore wise. Lets go a little deeper, cause obviously Paladins have some overlay with warriors...right? Paladins originated, when an Archbishop looked at his clerics and said "these guys are worthless in PvP" So he went to find the BIGGEST virgins in the Lordaeron Knighthood, and taught them magic. It didn't even matter if they were powerful knights or skilled knights, all the Archbishop waanted was some tight knight virtue. Which....for the record, the light EMPOWERS them, who needs skill, when you can use INNER FIRE, a fortification buff, and bubble shields. Dubbing them Paladins, and Led by the one and only Uther. This is the actual history of Paladins, specifically Knights of the Silver Hand, during the Second War. and yea, we got plenty of badass paladins out there, but lore wise, Paladins are incredibly specialized, which is to say, unless they fighting very specific enemies, they are WEAKER than your average warrior of the same skill level. So what does this tell you about Paladins? Skill doesn't matter, ALL that matters is their devotion to their moral code and the light. Skill HAS NOTHING to do with bein a Paladin and never has... Unless you consider devotion is a skill. What about other races of Paladins?? Blood Elves: Their not even technically Paladins, they are the regular Blood Elf Magic Knights, but they stole power from a Naaru and use that instead of arcane...and eventually from their Sunwell. Dreanai: Literally just given the power from the Naaru. Every single one of them. Even children have the power of the light. Tauren: Their Paladin magic is more akin to Druids. That's how its literally discribed, they draw magic from the Sun akin to Druids drawing magic from nature. and guess what, I would not consider most druids warrior. Though I will concede that there are SOME badass druid warriors Edit: Side tangent: Broxigar, an Orc Warrior faught in the War of the Ancients, an absolute badass warrior who was even able to WOUND freaking Sargeras. A badass in his own right, but what of his weapon? Broxigar Use "The Axe of Cenarius" a 2 handed wooden axe CRAFTED by Malfurian with the aid of Cenarius. Crafted specifically for Broxigar with druidic magic, this axe was enchanted with a peice of Kalimdor's magic power. I'm not making any claims one way or the other, but by using Mccy's logic, and a little theory magic, would that make Broxigar a druid...or a warrior using a powerful druid weapon? Like... the Ashbringer is a powerful Holy weapon. THE WEAPON is what turned enemies to ash, and it alone could be wielded by anyone. The Weapon channals holy magic, and highly regarded among Paladins and Priests, but a warrior could just use the weapon. There is nothing anywhere saying you need to be a Paladin or a priest to use it. Holy that Holy magic turned the dark crystal into something of pure holy power.

The Scarlet Crusade, one of the biggest wastes in terms of both storytelling and gameplay in WoW. They really should have been a faction that you could have joined and got reputation with, even if it was something silly as to be one that only human warriors/paladins/priests could join. The rewards could have been next to nothing or nothing at all, but the value in regards to the RP element or how players viewed their own characters would have made up for it. Really that's what reputations should have been, or rather remained: Something that's more of an RP element instead of simply just another bar you grinded up that you put zero thought into. It was really dumb how their story arc was literally: A demon was behind it. Multiple times, and they never really got any wiser to that.

The reason why Alexandros is wearing the tier 3 warrior set is because after he was killed he was raised as a death knight in naxxramas and the devs needed the closest thing to "I'm a dead, vengeful spirit" when Alex executed Renault. The devs back then were teasing wotlk, also becoming a DK is the end fate of any warrior or paladin of any worth, and that's why DK's are better than either.

fun fact before they retconned the lore alexandros mograine was the scarlet highlord and one of the founding members of the scarlet crusade
@espinete767 Жыл бұрын
Mograine was a Paladin, not only he was one of the original founders of the Knights of the Silver Hand, a paladin order, he also literally casted a holy spell to try and destroy the Dark Crystal that was to become the Ashbringer, that instead absorbed that spell. They and other members of the silver hand kept casting holy light onto the crystal until it transformed into a Pure Holy Light Beacon, and they forged the sword with it. And if Im not wrong the Ashbringer's story said that only a champion of the light could wield it at its finest, thats why it got purified when Tirion wielded it in WotLK and only Paladin characters have wielded it ever since.
@unknownsample48012 жыл бұрын
when you go to Old Hillsbrad, and view when they cleanse whatever material Ashbringer was forged from, Mograine himself doesn't help cleanse it, he's the only one out of those surrounding him that doesn't put any of The Light into the weapon.

if a paladin is an updated warrior, doesn't that mean people that use them need that extra help. So why would it take more skill to use a stronger version of a character?
