Asmongold knowing NOTHING of the subject he talks about .... Sega CD could play music CDs without any issues, and also VCDs , but those were technically unknown outside Japan, and were a niche even there. Sega Saturn was NOT TRASH, it was an OVERLY complex system to code for because it had multiple processors and that in 1995 was a virtual unknown and game developers CBA to code for it , even though there are some impressive unreleased, but quite complete games that can be found now on the interwebz that prove that the hardware was adequate beyond what people give it credit for. Also older consoles (1st-2nd gen) DID NOT FAIL due to bad capacitors - they failed because MAINLY the 1983 VIDEO GAME CRASH happened , because the market was over saturated and games that were literal trash came out (case in point - E.T, that ended up having virtually all its copies DUMPED in a LANDFILL). Also SEGA System was not the 1st SEGA console - Japan had the SGX-1000 that I think went to MK III before being re-labelled as Master System for EU , and Sega System for NA

I love the history of gaming, but it also takes me to a sad place. Always seeking escape through these consoles when my parents were bitterly fighting, but never being able to dedicate myself to a game because I was constantly moving between houses. Thank goodness Sega and Nintendo were around in the beginning, and later Playstation and Xbox. I did my best to enjoy it as much as I could, and it helped me through the hardest of times.

People in Chat are sad that the console doesn't work, but fact is the most old consoles simply just need a bit of dusting and isopropanol on the parts inside, since most consoles usually aren't broken but just filthy, you see it a lot where people sell their old consoles thinking they are dead then you just "restore" them, and usually you don't even have to fix them but just clean inside.

The snes had so many good games. The dreamcast memory cards had a small screen in them. It was crazy, like a tamogachi in the memory card. And Xbox used to have solid exclusives, but now you can play Xbox on pc. So build a pc, and you will never need an Xbox. And pc may not be as easy as a console, but is better in performance.

Microsoft probably knows by now how good Linux is if you are not a gamer (and it's getting better in that area as well), so they need to add extra value for it if they want it to remain relevant in the long run. You get Xbox if you can't afford to build the PC that will satisfy you.

I don't believe they included handheld systems. The DS famly(DS, Lite, DSI, DSI XL) sold 154.9 millions units according to a site know as Statista making it the second best selling system of all time with it second only to the PS2 by about 3 million units. Plus the Gameboy sold 118.7 million units as well. So I guess they just wanted to give everyone a fighting chance by not including nintendo's handhelds since they've sold around 473 million handhelds between Game and Watch,GB, GBA, DS, and 3DS with that likely surpassing all of Sony's console sales including PSP and Vita which weren't on this list
@SanjiBlackLegz
@SanjiBlackLegz 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah the list was for home systems. Handhelds are whole another league though. I hade GBA back in the days and fucking loved it. Then came PSP, and now I have 2DS XL for travel and emulation. Big thing about handhelds is they are for some reason really easy to sail the high seas: GBA had flash cartridges and you could upload roms on them, PSP and DS/3DS had a custom firmware and you would upload roms on a memory card, very easy and cheap if not free. While home consoles usually had some protection, region locks, all that stuff to prevent piracy. My 2DS XL has games that I couldn't play another way since some the old consoles were not sold in my country, so I could play games like Ocarina of Time or Mario 64 only recently, thanks to Virtual Console and pirate ports.

As someone who owned a Sega Saturn I can tell you that it could also play Cd's, and some game CD's if you put on your CD player had some freebies like the game OST, another thing that the Saturn had over PlayStation (my opinion) was it had internal memory storage, contrary to the PlayStation mandatory memory cards.

I've generally been a Nintendo guy. Had an NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Cube, Wii, Wii U, Switch. In college I had a PS2 at launch (pre-order baby!). I had that PS2 forever. Never got into Xbox until this year when I bought a Series X for my kids. Series X seems to have more promise as a system over PS5, but man linking your account with your Microsoft PC ID is really dumb. My kids love minecraft and the gamepass stuff so it works nice. I mainly like it for the 4k Blu Ray capabilities. Nintendo 64 will always be my favorite console. I got that thing for Christmas in 95, and Mario 64 was mind-blowing at the time. Close second is the PS2. Man, just so many good games on that thing. Metal Gear 2 and 3, GoW, Gran Turismo, GTA Vice City, GTA SA,

Intellivision was actually cool. The controller has the ability to place overlays. Baseball game had an overlay with the bases and you could press the pad key to quickly throw the ball to where you wanted. It was very innovative for the time. You probably did not appreciate it because your specific game choices might not line up. Coleco allowed Donkey Kong at home; omega race was a fun game. Atari 2600 Activision games were the best: river raid was awesome. I have played games ever since 1984. Saw everything gaming come out and it was a cool ride. Nintendo was awesome but 3D space harrier for sega master system was cool too! Let’s not forget golden age of arcades and roller skating! Hah.

Asmon, the sega saturn could also play CD's just like the playstation. and sega saturn actually had a number of good games, its just that the US release of the console was bungled and hard to get, leading to poor sales and the eventual death of the console. But there were amazing games for the saturn, MR Bones, Nights into Dreams, Panzer Dragoon 1+2, Valora Valley Golf, Shellshock, Command and Conquer (which had the full CG movies, unlike the N64 version), and so many other good games. But the Saturn was also really difficult to develop games for. I still have my sega saturn (with the special thumbstick). The only game I regret not ever getting when I had the chance during the Saturn era was Panzer Dragoon Saga. That game alone is probably worth almost a grand now. I hear from people who do own the game that its one of the best RPG's ever made, and as a long time Panzer Dragoon fan, my heart still hurts thinking about it and missing my chance to get that game.

You pretty summed it up. The Saturn was absurdly expensive for a console. The infographic got it wrong -- it was $399 at launch. It soon went down in price after they realized how massive Sony was becoming. I practically lived at my friend's house when he got it. The selection and number of games were pitiful (Daytona Racing was the strongest by far, unless you really liked fighting games) at launch -- but it showed that you could bring the Arcade to the living room.

@drag0nmancer
@drag0nmancer 3 жыл бұрын
@@theburgundynetwork3432 unfortunately you are wrong, saturn emulation is notoriously difficult, due to the way the system was developed and the games were designed, its really difficult to get emulators and roms of the saturn to work, much less work together. thats part of the reason why Saturn games often sell for crazy amounts of money, is because a lot of games are difficult to even try and emulate, so you are pretty much stuck with relying on physical media to play most games, and thus demand is really high. Not to mention a lot of saturn games didnt get enough distribution that they should have, so a lot of games are hard to come by due to just how low the printings counts of games were.

6:11 Not gonna lie, one of the buying points that I had in convincing my old man to buy me a PS2 back in the day (I realize he's talking about PS1 but it's still relevant with the PS2) is that it could play CDs and DVDs. That was back around 2003-4 probably, 2005 at the latest. I can't recall talk of the 'thin' version of the PS2 back then, though I do recall having seen one after having gotten my full-sized PS2. The variety of games... my God... incredible. I was buying used games so damn often, spent a lot of time in EB Games, also brought back games I didn't like for them and they gave me credit or something like that so as to purchase used games there. I prefer being a computer gamer with mods and what not, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy my time as a console peasant.

If they also included Handhelds I think Nintendo would be first. This chart ended with Sony in the lead with 130 million extra sold. Now add the PSP and Vita to Sony (PSP 80 million + Vita 15 million) = 545 million total. Now Nintendo homeconsoles had 320 million and now we add Gameboy, DS and 3DS (Gameboy 118 million, DS 154 million, 3DS 75 million) = 667 million total. In the end I like both Sony and Nintendo just not sure why they excluded handhelds. They are definitely also "Game Consoles".

But all the companies past #5 only made one thing a looooong time ago, when home consoles were vastly less popular. ...and they were trash. The big home consoles went from monopoly, to duopoly. If Xbox wasn't backed by microsoft's endless money, they would've gone under. The extra competiton reduced the available market share for Sega. Point is, it's too hard a market to get into, and then you have to be in the top 3 or your company dies. There hasn't been any serious competition for that #5 slot.

It's hard to imagine a company getting into consoles at this point. The only real contenders are Google and Amazon, simply because they are gigantic super-rich tech companies. I THINK I had SEGA Genesis v2 as my first console. I don't remember it having red buttons, so it's not the v1, and the v3 just looks off so I don't think it's that one either. What a marvelous thing. Being 5 years old, I spent HOURS playing on that (1 hour a day felt like 100 lol). I was the master of MK3 Ultimate - no one could beat me in the neighborhood. I knew all the fatalities for every character and how to unlock Shao Kahn and Motaro, but I did not know brutalities nor Shan-Tsung transforming tricks. And the DBZ game. I had it later for PC as well. Great times. Then moved onto PS1. Then PS2, PS3. My brother got the XBox 360 and then the One S. At that point I already was part of PC. PS1 to 3, and maybe 5 now. But the first 3 were great. They were literally the generation leap of the other one. Like I remember playing Winning Eleven A TON on PS1. My favorite games, but you couldn't play RE4 and the likes on that. That was PS2, massive upgrade. Not to forget DB Budokai Tenkaichi 3. And it still looks fucking great to this day tbh. Then PS3 came as "next gen", up in graphics, and usability with better online connection and services, web browser, etc. It didn't work well, I remembe rbuying that over a PC at the time bc it was kind of cheaper than a PC, and I didn't know anything about computers. With this I thought I can play games and browse the web which was what I used to do back then. The PS4 was like an update to PS3 while 5 is the clear generation leap.

The Atari 2600 was a really well built console I got one for Christmas in 1980, and it still works today. Still have my first computer an Atari 800 I got back in 1982, and it still works. Sometimes I will stream retro games with it on Twitch. Also the Playstation2 case was based on the Atari Falcon 040 microbox design (Sony even referenced it in their PS2 patent application). Cheers!

I remember back in the days of GameBoy vs GameGear. You had the GameBoy that could play games for hours, and then the GameGear which was just something that destroyed batteries in a half hour. (Might be exaggerating a little, but not by much).

Focusing only on controllers, I remember reading several articles that the Xbox360 was considered the most ergonomically comfortable controller ever designed. My first console was Pong in 1976 when I was 4. Mine was built in the shape of a triangle, and it had pong with 2 paddles on one side, a racing wheel on another side, and the 3rd side had a light gun. It had Pong, a racing game, and a western shooting game. Also, Playstation wasn't the first console you could play music CDs on. I had a Sega CD (1993), and you could play music CDs on that. Sega CD had a built-in music player.

the videogame consoles from my life: - NES (rather a pirate console of the many that were sold here in México under the name of "100 in 1") - XBOX (but only my dad played it, I was 2 years old and he was in his 20s) - GBA SP - PS2 - PSP - Wii - DS - Xbox 360 - Xbox One - 3Ds - PS4 - Nintendo Switch I do not regret never having bought a PS3, much less because most of their (popular and my favorite) games have already been ported to PS4

List like this one frequently leave out the Texas Instruments TI99 because it also was trying to play in the computer market as well. But it took cartridges, had games, and had controllers, so to me it was a video game console too. And by 1984 it had sold 2.8 million units (including to my family) before they stopped production. But that would have put it in 3rd or 4th place on this list at the time, so I feel like that's a missing piece.

IMO, the Gen 1 PS3 is the single best piece of console hardware there's ever been (when comparing each to what was available at the time). The software for the PS3 was super lacking through. BUT as someone who's PS1 and PS2 had died, that full backwards compatibility was incredible, PLUS as a movie buff the DVD and BD capability was just brilliant.

I bought an atari2600 in 2013 and it came with off brand controllers and for some reason the only game that was included in the Ebay package that worked with those controllers was E.T... also, there were 4 copies of E.T. in the bundle I bought. I took one to GameStop as a prank and put it on a shelf. I waited about 30 minutes and someone grabbed it and took it to the counter. Then the employee snapped it in half and threw it in the trash. Only "prank" I've ever pulled but it was 100% worth it.
