Ubisoft Toronto and Ubisoft Montreal don't really like each other either. Toronto was in charge of the Farcry series. While they were working with Farcry Primal, they had an argument with the Montreal division about their choice of the animal they used for scouting and marking targets. 4:52 I'm a high school teacher. The average student at my school is reading at a grade 6 level. That's 3 to 5 years behind where they ought to be when they enter high school. We also have a decent number of kids who are reading at a grade 2 level. Grade *TWO.* Literacy rates are worse now than when I started teaching over 10 years ago and, in my opinion, so is the capacity for the average person to think critically.
@Aureilius21123 ай бұрын
People have said stuff like this for decades. It’s nothing new. I figured a teacher would know that. I think you need to look at yourself before you criticize others for lack of critical thinking.
@Aiphiae3 ай бұрын
@@Aureilius2112 Sorry champ, but if you look at declining literacy rates, declining aptitude in mathematics, and the general loss of basic skills, it becomes pretty clear there's a long term, growing problem that has been spanning multiple cohorts and likely generations. Now, the knee-jerk response is "hurr durr teachers aren't doing their jobs!" but the reality is we can only do so much when students (and parents) put in basically zero effort to learn or develop themselves. The trope "people have always said this" is a tired one. Sure, they have but I posit this option to you: *what if the people saying this stuff for decades were right?* The evidence seems to line up with the fact that they were. Things are worse (as they predicted) not better.
@Aureilius21123 ай бұрын
@@Aiphiae You’re way over-simplifying the issue. The “declining literacy rates” is heavily influenced by influxes of people who don’t speak English as a first language which influences the average. Literacy rates have never been higher when you correct for some basic things you’re overlooking. Every generation has been more educated than the last and that trend continues. The issue is the education system has been re-orienting itself to portray a lot of the ideological positions that were brought up in this video. Saying it’s because people can’t read as well just doesn’t track with reality. The point about attention span and ideological capture are the reasons for these issues. It’s not because people can’t read which is an absolutely wild take. People will just disengage with anything that doesn’t agree with them and simply not read it.
@Aiphiae3 ай бұрын
@@Aureilius2112 Declining literacy rates aren't a simple result of an influx of new English speakers. The literacy rates are declining in regions where immigration is negligible. Your point also fails to address the decline in mathematics which are a universal "language" and are taught similarly in most countries immigrants come from. I don't disagree that the education system has some god-awful ideological positions (most of which I reject entirely) but this scale (and time span) of declining academic ability is not the result of those policies. Moreover, I never said "people can't read" I said we have "declining literacy rates," and literacy involves far more than simply reading - and *all* of the facets involved are in decline. Again, the long standing trend of declining academic skills was predicted ages ago by the very people you claim were screaming that the sky was falling. They weren't wrong.

@@bismarck5537 Whelp, here's my tinfoil hat theory: Globalization is purely held up by leftist politics and politicians. That is the new world order. There is no country, only one single entity driven by "modern and progressive" thinking. However, this is being put in danger by right wing politics which are mostly derived from traditional values: nationalism, religion, chivalry, and traditional gender roles. That's why anything "right wing" is seen as dangerous by the woke. This endangers the global world order. Powerful people like Larry Fink are then affected by anti-woke politics because this creates social movements that would put their worldwide influence at risk. So what is their response? Blackrock pushes more woke politics to strengthen their supporter base. The best way being to gather people who can be seen as disadvantaged or victimized (People of color, rainbow people, women) and give them administrative influence while using these people also as a tool to censor anyone who might have "wrong think" ideologies. ------------------- TLDR: Blackrock wants to remain a global power but fear anti-woke politics or right-wing politics could endanger that so they double-down on censorship and publishing propaganda.

I don’t have a problem with a black main character, I have a problem with a game about a samurai who is not Japanese. The hip hop music, the wrong architecture then on top of it they use a guy who lived his whole life outside Japan, arrived in 1579, served Nobunaga for 1 year in an unknown capacity….and suddenly he is called a samurai? Samurai culture was that shallow?
@fears4tears4 ай бұрын
I've read historical Japanese documents (translated into English obv) that basically demonstrate him as a samurai. Like his pay, his position, his command, etc was all consistent with a samurai and using words that typically referred to samurai. so for all intents and purposes he was one. I don't really have a problem with it at all, but yeah the music and apparently using Chinese architecture?? And also it is a *little* weird to make a game set in Japan about ninja and samurai and pick that particular era, it just feels a bit disingenuous. But i think Yosuke's inclusion is kind of a nothingburger. If the game is good, who cares.
@rohanroos14954 ай бұрын
@@fears4tears the problem I have with him being a samurai with a whole game about him is the fact that there is almost nothing told about him in historical books. I read the letters where they all mention him in passing and how they mentioned he was made a sword bearer. Even if Nobunaga gave him a samurai title (which confuses me as the definition of a samurai is blurry depending on the Japanese period) but traditionally he would have never been considered a samurai. a samurai was to be born in the samurai family, adopted by a samurai family with the permission of authorities, or get married to a samurai. So they were a form of aristocracy as well as a warrior caste if I understand it all correctly What I did sort of understand is that he had the title/position of a samurai, but he was not considered the same rank as other samurai belonging to the warrior caste? Japanese people have strong traditions and value their own culture a lot, so i think most of us don’t understand their values enough to be able to declare what is a samurai and what is not
@fears4tears4 ай бұрын
@rohanroos1495 As I was writing this I delved into a rabbithole. Here is the first paragraph I initially wrote, based on information from a historian on Reddit (don't laugh yet, there's a reason I said there's a rabbit hole.) "In the Maeda clan version of Shinchōkōki, compiled by Ōta Gyūichi using notes and diary entries from Oda Nobunga, using the English translation, it is written that Yasuke is given a "stipend, a private residence, and was given a short sword with a decorative sheath. He is sometimes seen in the role of weapon bearer." The word stipend, in the original Japanese text being 扶持 (fuchi, ふち). In every other context this word is used in Shinchōkōki, it refers to the pay of a samurai or the pay used to hire samurai. He is also referred to as Nobungas's weapon bearer, which is the job koshō (小姓) had, who were samurai. The only non-samurai in the Shinchōkōki to receive a residence was given to the Jesuits." As I was trying to corroborate this with historical evidence, I realized that there is some controversy to these claims. I can not find a version of this archive online to check myself, and the interpretation of this passage as equivalent to making one a samurai is according to Thomas Lockley, who has been known for essentially taking what little information was known about Yasuke and mythologizing him as a legend and writing entire novels filled with speculation, unsubstantiated claims. The idea of Yasuke as a great samurai is largely interpretation or interpolation, and its mostly THIS GUY doing it. However, assuming the translation provided is accurate (which it at least seems to be mostly so), he was indeed given a stipend and was entrusted with carrying Nobunaga's weapons, which is indeed a job normally given to lower ranked samurai. There is a quote from the Diary of Matsudaira Ietada that says "Nobunaga was accompanied by a black man who was presented to him by the missionaries and to whom he gave a stipend. His body was black like ink, and he was 6 shaku 2 bu [182.4 cm or near 6 feet] tall, and his name was said to be Yasuke." I have found multiple translations corroborating this. It is worth noting that within the Shinchōkōki Nobunaga was accused of giving newcomers stipends without them achieving much. In the 10th year of the Tenshō era (1582), third month, 28th day, Nobunaga orders, "Send the ordinary soldiers home from here. Only unit leaders shall accompany me." It is worth mentioning that this order is BEFORE Matsudaira Ietada saw him with Nobunaga, which was in the 5th month of 1582. There are claims that after Nobunaga committed seppuku due to the rebellion of Akechi Mitsuhide (during which Yasuke was a retainer to Nobunaga), Yasuke went to Nobutada (Nobunaga's son and heir) and fought alongside him against Akechi. They lost, Nobutada was killed, but Akechi let him live, partially due to racist ideology against "a black slave" which was "bestial", and because he was not Japanese, and therefore (in Akechi's mind) not a samurai and not bound by the same code of honor, i.e did not need to be killed or commit seppuku. However, I am unable to find a primary source for this information, even when it is quoted. Some of it is attributed to Thomas Lockley, which is odd considering if anything it seems to weaken the claim that Yasuke was a samurai. What does this boil down to? To Nobunaga, the most powerful daimyō in Japan at this time, it seems that he viewed Yasuke as an honorary samurai in the year that he knew him. Perhaps due to his supposed strength (from the Shinchōkōki "his formidable strength surpassed that of ten men"), Nobunaga bestowed him the name Yasuke, a sword, a stipend, and let him sometimes bear his weapons. He served as Nobunaga's retainer seemingly even after "ordinary soldiers" were dismissed. He was one of thirty men with Nobunaga when he was betrayed. If the last claim is to believed, he fought for him and went on to fight even for his son afterwards. To Nobunaga at least, it seems that Yasuke was viewed as close to a samurai as a foreigner reasonably could. That does not mean all of Japan saw it that way, as he did not commit seppuku due to failing to protect one, maybe two, daimyō, and again if the last claim is to be believed Akechi (who was a samurai) did not view him as one. To be quite honest, if Nobunaga viewed him as a samurai during a period where samurai had a rather loose definition (it is alleged that during the Sengoku period virtually any soldier who was retainer to a lord or especially daimyō was a samurai), that's all that really matters. Yasuke predates a *formalized* concept of a samurai code of honor, bushidō, which happened during the Edo period. As for how Japan views him today, that is really up to Japanese historians. Not really the place of me, Thomas Lockley, or pretty much anyone in these comments to "decide". It is worth noting that Thomas Lockley has, since, written at least 2 historical fiction books about Yasuke that basically make up information with no primary source and have a pretense that Yasuke was a legendary warrior and samurai. There are not any primary sources I can find about Yasuke doing particularly great deeds or fighting in many battles besides two. It is very weird to write historical fanfiction and claiming it to be true with no evidence. The big thing though, with historical records cleared up, does this matter even a little for an Assassin's Creed game? No, not in the slightest. Assassin's Creed is a fictional game that uses real world locations and occasionally real historical figures in a fictional story. There is absolutely nothing wrong with them making a video game where Yasuke is a badass Assassin samurai, he was a real person who was a retainer for Nobunaga at least for some time and did see some combat, they can take that and write whatever story they want with him, they've been doing that for years. As long as the game is fun, Yasuke is not an issue at all for the game. It's cool history, I had a blast studying it to write this dumbass essay for a KZbin comment on an asmongold video.
@fears4tears4 ай бұрын
@rohanroos1495 tl;dr at the time samurai was not the concept you are describing, it was much looser, for all intents and purposes Nobunaga viewed him as a samurai, but it's possible some people of the time disagreed. whether history will view him as one is a decision to be made by Japanese historians. Assassin's Creed is not a history book, it is essentially historical fanfiction, and taking a real life historical figure who essentially did act as a samurai and making a game where he is one is completely fine, people don't play AC because it is meant to literally represent historical fact. All that matters is if game fun.

I wish to add that the inaccuracies isn’t completely unforgivable, AS LONG AS THEY ARE PLAUSIBLE. A big problem for Ubisoft is that people know a lot about Japanese history, or at least have some notion of it, and when this is combined with completely inept buildings with hovering doors, platforms that lead nowhere and only exist for the player to parkour on, it starts to fall apart. Plausibility is what matters, and ubi’s world design isn’t plausible in Shadows, their whole premise isn’t plausible (stealth, but you’re playing the two most eye-drawing people in the entire country, ninja chick and the only black giant.) This could perhaps be forgiven if there’s a plausible explanation for this choice, but combined with bugs and the crappy world design makes it another death stroke.

let's look at the most popular games of 2024 and what they all have in common: Palworld - Game about shooting and capturing pokemon mixed with a survival. Helldivers 2 - Game about shooting bug aliens and defending an hyper surrealistic version of earth and it's "democratic" government. Stellar Blade - Basically Neir Automata Black Myth Wukong - Game about a monkey with a stick Warhammer 40k: Space Marine 2 - Game about bigger monkeys with guns, killing bugs in the name of the Emperor. Insert Anime games/gachas here - Games about waifus and anime. Elden Ring DLC - doesn't really count but sure What do all these games have in common? The number 1 reason they were made was to have fun. Let's look at the flops of this year: Concord - Hahahahahahhaha Star Wars Outlaws - Hahahahahahahahah Assassin's Creed: Shadows - Delayed to next year but still counts, HAHAHAHAHHA Dustborn - Honestly not even funny, just sad. Flintlock - Yeah I don't know what it is either. Skull and Bones - HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA Tales of Kenzera: Zau - idk, gamespot thinks its a "popular" game despite a 287 peak concurrent players on steam, typical games media outlets. What do all these games have in common? DEI bullshit whose number 1 reason they were made was to try and make money and force a politically correct message. I object to your take (for once). True artists are people who have the ability to remove politics from art. They are able to listen to feedback/criticism. Idiots who say that are "artsy" just because they work in an artistic space are a WHOLE different story. Ever see the picture of the OG devs drawing how they think Kirby looked like from memory? Most got it wrong, some got it totally wrong, but they are still amazing devs who understand coding... they're just not artists. And someone like niel druckman is a "artist" in the sense that he's super artsy fartsy and has his nose pointed upwards his whole life (and he also can't handle ANY criticism, like a child). But I'd say he's also in the wrong field. He wants to make divisive movies, so he should go make cheap mid or low budget movies, not head a AAA gaming studio. Artists should know where they are used the best too.

Thank god for us? No, no. AS a European man living in China, thank god for devs like GAME SCIENCE who brought us ACTUAL representations of their culture like Black Myth Wukong. When you put Ubisoft's disgustingly western, hostile, race-inserting takeover of Japanese culture in this game and put it RIGHT UP NEXT TO ANOTHER GAME THAT WAS RELEASED THIS YEAR - Black Myth Wukong - which was made by ACTUAL people OF that country and culture with zero need to insert other races or ideologies? It's EMBARRASSING for them. SO f'ing humiliating. Bad timing on their part and NO WONDER they want to put off release now to 2025 - because if you put it out so close to a masterclass in how to do it RIGHT like that, it looks like colonialist, arrogant vandalism by westerners of a culture and history they don't understand.
@tkps4 ай бұрын
What I find amusing about this basically colonialist attitude and that's what it's broadcasting along with bigotry and chauvanism, is the very people indulging in it are the ones accusing every current Euro or Euro adjacent country of being colonialist simply for appreciating their own histories or gasp having a statue or other monument in celebration of past deeds or achievements as if we should be ashamed of them. I think the reasoning was pretty well explained in the video discussing Concord wasting $400 million; if the company heads decide to go in a certain direction, all pushing back against it leads to is getting fired and replaced. Why push back when the outcome for the product will be the same (every complaint, legitimate or otherwise, will be ignored), and the only difference is that the employee loses out on salary and benefits? When you are guaranteed to lose, the only winning move is not to play. In terms of making enough money to get by and maintain personal well-being, it's better to play along and prepare to hop to another job than it is to struggle in vain against company leadership in regards to their questionable decisions. It's not ideal, but it is one of the many harsh realities of the modern workplace.

The reason people like Thanos is he did what the avengers would never be able to do because their are morally good. adolf had people tortured and worse. comparing the two is disingenuous thanos watched his world starve to death, millions died and his entire species but him died out, he waged a war to prevent every other species in the universe from having to endure over population. its a real discussion people engage in because overpopulation typically only has 1 answer which no one "good" would consider. it shows in falcon and the winter soldier, the avengers succeeded in returning everyone only for everyone to live in poverty and starving, while the avengers disbanded without fixing the problem. all that said it doesnt make thanos the "good guy" but the "bad guy" willing to do what cant be done for the benefit of everyone. hence gray.

As soon as you want to appeal to the people, and ask for their patronage in return, your beliefs have zero relevance - only your creativity can be successfully shared. Beliefs and creativity are not the same thing, and you can truly measure an artist's creativity by how effortlessly they can hide their beliefs in their work. @@MightandLight "Well then following that logic even the first assassin's creed wasn't accurate". Yeah, no shit. The AC games aren't and have never claimed to be historically accurate. I haven't played an AC game since Syndicate, but I'm pretty sure that they even state at the beginning of the game that it's a work of fiction and isn't intended to be an accurate representation of the culture and history depicted (or at least they did in the old ones). "I can accept artistic liberties that serves the story as long as the era it's set in is accurate". What you mean is that you'll pick and choose when to care about historical accuracy in historical fiction based upon vibes, just as all of the people complaining about Yasuke in AC: Shadows are doing. How on Earth does Leonardo Da Vinci building a tank pass the "historical accuracy check", but Ancient Greek girls going to school or a black dude (that did exist but wasn't a Samurai) being depicted as a samurai not?

@@jordanwood3150 No it means I can accept a magic apple or Leonardo building flying machines (when he failed in real life) because it gave us a really cool mission But other than that Florence was accurately represented, from the buildings, the people, the culture. I mean hell in the first trailer of the first game altair had a crossbow that they later removed because it wasn't accurate to the time era, that's the kind of accuracy I respected ubisoft for You can have both, you can have an accurate time era WITH all the magical stuff with the apple of Eden

11:40 the artist argument is good but is better described like this. If a painter wants to ignore criticism they can, they only need to sell their painting to one person. If a game company wants to ignore it they are screwed, the investment costs to make their game are far higher so they need to sell more than one copy like a painter would.

Another reason why it can take a long time for a game developers reputation to fall to ruin is because their reputations can be compartmentalized so their rep becomes quite resilient. For example if they always release AC and people know its always gonna be a good AC game then that rep will be good, but if they always flop another series the rep of that game can be in ruin but their overall rep is most reflective in the largest current success. One exception is when they flop a licenced title with a bigger rep, like star wars. That is probably the first real total rep loss theyve suffered, add that to their staple AC failing and we'll see ruin in a much more complete manner, after that the only real tangible rep left will be in Farcry... I think.
