Awesome asmr aside, what kind of black magic sorcery is this?? Is the water actual boiling? How does it work?

It's chemistry! There's chemicals (magnesium powder, a little iron and salt) inside the ration heater that heat up when they become wet. The water's not hot enough to boil, but it definitely's bubbling from the heat. Not quite magic but it is pretty cool.

The iron in the flameless ration heater oxidizes very quickly when water is added. The speed of the chemical reaction causes heat, which is why the water gets hot. Also it's why you don't put food directly into it without a barrier like a sealed pouch.

Well if you used for example, the actual American military MRE, you actually need to shove the pouch with the heater and meal in it back into the cardboard box of that main meal. And prop it up at an angle. You wouldn't really hear this bubbling sound quite like this.
