goodreads is a good app for finding new books :) you can also track your read books and your tbr list on there, it’s super helpful

From friends, from staff picks at my local bookstore, from you all (!!), from authors I like who talk about the books THEY like in interviews and stuff like that, also if I like a book I check out what else that press/imprint offers, especially if it's a smaller operation 💜

yay, Mauve book-related ASMR is my fave! Always excited to check out your recommendations. I'm currently reading a book I think you would like! The US title is Buddha's Little Finger by Viktor Pelevin (original title is Chapayev and Void). It's a post-soviet Russian novel that explores the nature of existence from a Buddhist perspective. The main character lives two lives, one in a post-soviet mental institution and one during the Russian Civil War, and it isn't clear which life is real and which is a dream, or if neither of them are real. IT'S SO GOOD. One of the best books I've read in a long time, highly recommend!

Fabulous recs as always! I’ve read a few of your suggestions and was blown away (Second Place, Self Portrait in Green, Copenhagen Trilogy, Mrs. Calliban). On to Swimming Home by Deborah Levy next. I read The Man Who Saw Everything and absolutely loved it so I had to read more of her work. Anyway, love the book vids the most! ❤❤

Cool picks as always!! Totally feel you on being picky about prose. Definitely curious about _Y/N_ I just finished up a couple of books. I *loved* _Computing Taste: Algorithms and the Makers of Music Recommendation_ , which is an anthropology book that seeks to better understand & discuss (music, generally) recommendation algorithms by way of understanding the people who create and talk and theorize about it. A short and sweet read, but I thought it was *incredible* the way it tied together different fields of study. I think it helps me understand a lot about why systems have evolved the way that they have, through the ideological predilections of the folks creating these systems. Trying to get some folks I know to read it so that I can book club it with them lol. I also literally yesterday wrapped up _Treasure Island!!!_ , which I liked but did not love. It was *really* voicey (which I dug) and liked it conceptually, but by the end I found it honestly kind of exhausting. There's only so much toxicity I can take I think lmao. Not sure what I'm feeling next, so I think I'm gonna start a couple books I've been eyeing for a minute--Batuman's _The Idiot_ and Ngai's _Theory of the Gimmick: Aesthetic Judgement and Capitalist Form_--and see if I'm in a fiction or nonfiction mood and go from there. Have a nice week!! ✌ P.S. in the last couple weeks I've watched a couple more Godard films and omg lowkey I think La Chinoise might be my favorite movie of all time. we'll see what happens when the recency bias wears off, but I literally still can't think about that movie without getting emotional

Lol I hear you on Treasure Island!!! getting exhausting. She is SO MUCH. If you pick up The Idiot, I hope you like it! I really think you will. Going to check out Theory of the Gimmick and Computing Taste -- thanks for the recs! As for films, I think our next cycle is gonna be some French new wave, as inspired by you! Maybe Cleo 5 to 7, Claire's Knee, some others. I'll keep you posted

@@MauveASMR I've ended up continuing to read The Idiot & Theory of the Gimmick in parallel, lol. OMG Selin is just the best, I love her voice and the way she thinks. Despite many differences I feel a deep kinship with her, hahaha. I totally relate to the way she jumps between ideas, makes connections, finds things baffling, and on and on and on. Just got to Spring a couple nights ago but haven't had much time to go back. This book has made me want to go back to college in a way I haven't felt in like... 15 years lol. Theory of the Gimmick is very interesting but a bit denser than I had anticipated, so I'm working through slowly. Excited for your next movie cycle!!! I have a couple friends who swear by Cleo from 5 to 7, but I've never seen it!! And since my last comment I've also watched Godard's 2 or 3 Things I Know About Her and Week-end. The former I think does some really interesting formal stuff but was a little more video essay than I was prepared for when I sat down. Week-end is genuinely incredible. Very funny, very dark, and lowkey some really impressive technical filmmaking.
