finally, someone talking abt the age gap in cmbyn. No matter how good i was told the writing is or how good the story is i never got past the age gap. it is not only an age gap but Elio is underage. He is literally nothing more than a child. I feel that in a society where LGBTQ people don't feel accepted and left out this problematic story is not only a bad representation but also could be misunderstood as justification of huge age gaps and underage dating.
@bkchillingz
@bkchillingz Жыл бұрын
You don't have to be LGBTQ to be potentially attracted to younger people - see Lolita by Nabokov. LGBTQ and pedophilic novels are generally read by people who are smarter because they handle deviations from a norm better / are more empathetic.

@@bkchillingz of course i totally agree maybe i failed to make my point clear. Unfortunately these acts doesn’t define hetero people but when a minority group is mentioned with this type of relationship or act it sticks and creates a bad reputation. Which is the reason why i felt the need to mention lgbtq people. My mother tongue is not english so i hope i made my point clear.
@bkchillingz
@bkchillingz Жыл бұрын
No you were very clear! I see your point and people are going to make this connection. I however disagree that a story could be used as a justification for underage dating. There is a power difference which injustifies the whole thing. However, as I said it's not strange to find one fantasizing about dating someone younger. That's what these stories are for.

@@bkchillingztrue but people who are heavily against lgbtq+ people always say things like that! they talk about how they brainwash other people into joining their community which is so strange like it's not a cult bro

I’m about 185 pages into “The Bell Jar”, which for the most part is very interesting and beautifully written (even though it’s quite sad). It has some casual racism for the time which is a bit distracting , but it’s one of those classics I wanted to catch up with. Might read “Great Expectations” next!! But lots of new recommendations from this video, thank you! 😄love book content!!

I didn't read Call me by your Name but I watched the movie and I also didn't like it... maybe the movie is just that bad (someone who has read the book will have to tell me how the two compare) but I just didn't like the dynamic AT ALL. The age gap felt really weird to me. Malibu rising, on the other hand, I LOVED!

I felt the same way about Call Me by Your Name movie. The power imbalance is inevitable with a big age gap like that, especially when one party is still a teenager.

31:05 If I remember correctly Warren the drummer from Daisy Jones & the Six was mentioned. I believe he got naked in the pool or something, even his wife was there I think, but I could be wrong. Anyway I agree with you There’s something about TJR’s writing that is just sort of addictive. This video also reminded me I actually read Siddhartha ages ago along with Demian by the same author and it was such a great a book, if you liked Siddharta, I would say Demian is worth a read too. I don’t remember much about Siddharta because as a young teen a lot went over my head and I didn’t love it but I should probably give it a reread. End of my rant, I live for your book content ✨

I don't read much, but there's one series of books that's had me gripped for nearly 20 years. If you haven't heard of the disk world series by the late great Terry Pratchett you should give it a read. The writing is really intelligent and mixes fantasy with comedy, among other things. If you decide to give it a look I'd love to hear what you think, good or bad.

yess did not like call me by your name at all. while I was watching the movie for the first time, it personally felt more of like a coming of age story from elio's perspective and not a full on romance (I was also very much captivated by the cinematography and focused on the artistic side). for me, elio was having a teenage crush and oliver was exploiting it. but it become wayy more disturbing in the book and it totally does not help that the author said some real sketchy and disturbing shit. second book 'find me' is even worse, i could not get through even the half of it and dropped it few years back. it also totally might be bc I read it translated, but I do not think it was that good artistically

I read CMBYN five years or so ago when I was ~21 and when I was that age the gap didn't really stand out to me; currently I know I would be put off by it. I still recollect the prose being lovely and frankly the queer lust was very realistic but I really think the gap undermines that beauty and perpetuates some lingering issues in the gay community. Thanks for another lovely video! I always enjoy seeing your updates on GR :) 📚 📚 📚 📚

only just started watching but omg i am so glad you did not like call me by your name. it's so weird to see this really uncomfortable icky age gap being praised and romanticised Especially considering the awful groundless accusations lgbt folk have had to always deal with their entire existence.. no thanks.
@noatfrom
@noatfrom Жыл бұрын
To be fair, liking or disliking a book and being uncomfortable reading about certain topics is entirely up to the reader and obviously can't be discussed, but I wouldn't throw the book down into the flames. It's really a lot of the fans who are doing all the romanticizing and praising of the weird age gap, but not the book itself. Even if this book shouldn't have been crowned with this misplaced aura/popularity, the narrative elements brought into these pages are the everyday lives of so many queer people around us, especially gay men, and are sadly key to much of our upbringing. The relationship is manipulative and unequal, sure, but just like in real life. The book is never about a transcendental love-story between two soulmates, but only about the changes and experiences a 17-year-old goes through during a summer full of discoveries. The good and the bad. It's really only Elio's point of view, and there's a lot of wrongs and alterations in the mind of a 17-year-old boy. We're not here to condemn the age gap or any of the character’s values because that's not why the book is interesting/important. And seeing how this coming of age story has been sold as a great gay romance is what really gave the ick to new readers imo.
