Interesting discussion as always! I've always been curious how KZbinrs stay "anonymous" even with a half-face reveal. You have such a unique voice and mannerisms (and taste in books!) that I can only imagine your IRL people could definitely recognize you here. And if a subscriber were to meet you in, say, a bookstore, maybe they could clock you if you chatted a bit. On the other hand, COVID taught me how surprised I can be when I finally see the other half of someone's face 😂 Anyway, I applaud you sticking to your own terms and appreciate you being thoughtful about your digital platform. It's a pretty fun place to hang 💖

Aw thank you! I really appreciate that! 💜 As for voice / mannerisms / etc -- yeah I could maybe be recognized! But also to your point about face reveals post-pandemic, my partner and I experienced one with a neighbor that left us speechless; she is a very pretty and unique-looking woman with features we just never would have imagined. Honestly I think my face can be a little like that for other people too -- but who knows!

Ever since I came upon this channel, one of the things that kept me here, caming back every week, is the aesthetic concept that you apply to every video. The attention to detail, composition of the image, colors, lighting, locations, even the way you talk, the timbre of your voice, and the words you choose. All of it, makes to a unique image and character to the content, and I find the decision of not showing your face, as a part of that, as one more natural way of building this up. You said someone called it dreamy and cozy, and I think it is. It works for you, for your privacy and comfort, and for us, for setting an ambience, and a mood, to relax and connect, wich is the point of all of this. So thanksss Mauve for being here and for everything you do!!!

Ohh, you're so attractive that you don't want to distract us from the asmr, got it. Jokes aside, privacy is important, people can get obsessive and weird, it's better to stay safe. You're a thoughtful person, I think you're doing the right thing, people will use your image for all kinds of things. AI is remarkable but also terrifying, to think one day we may lose total sense for what's real is a worry among many.

Super late commenting. Every time I thought about commenting I would fall asleep! Lol I used to follow an ASMRist where she did not show the top part of her face. Then she did a face reveal and now only has full face videos. I stopped watching her immediately. I think why the half face appeals to me is: I watch facial expressions intently. For my job and probably naturally. I study people's faces to assess their emotions etc. So full faces can be really distracting to me. So when I am trying to relax/sleep your videos are far superior cause I am more focused on your hands or your voice rather than your face. I commend you so much for dedicating time to be sure your top half of your face is unseen. I can imagine it would be tedious editing. Also, you are very smart to protect your identity. And your safety is important. Especially cause you have a large following. And of course we support you in anything! Thank you M for many years of helping me. I appreciate you so much!

I loved this ASMRtist CordeliaCharter for her no face content. Eventually, she showed her face, which allowed her to make more diverse content via roleplays - which were creative, offbeat, like yours. But it was a totally different vibe from the no face content. She's no longer making videos, but her no face videos still give me asmr after all these years.

Hello! I've been subbed for like 3 years but this is my first comment. Anyway, I think you should keep it anonymous. I played in a band and our singer was a young lady who had a KZbin channel which got fairly popular. She wound up in a situation to Gibi's (if you've ever heard her address the deep fakes and other weird stuff people do). Some of these weirdos even started showing up to our shows and it got so bad that our singer actually had to take a hiatus. Fortunately, she was able to tour another country as a solo act. But it could have been much worse. I think you've created a very cool space which has a divinely feminine energy to it. I feel like that's rare in ASMR because some people wind up confusing the intimacy of it for something that it's not. But anyway, I am just is that I completely agree with all of your reasons and I really do appreciate the space and community you have created here.

I was also unaware of the deepfakes / Gibi addressing them so I just watched her video talking about it -- it's seriously messed up, and such an abuse of her image, privacy, and agency. Thanks for bringing it to my attention, so I can make efforts support her (and other people it's happening to) in whatever ways I can. Honestly I like your anonymity. Obviously I'd be curious, but I also agree with the people who think it adds to the 'mood'. Your videos are so lovely and calming and they have this liminal, mystical quality that I think would be lost if the veil was lifted. I also think that it makes your videos more approachable. People assume from what they can see that you're probably a nice looking person - but they can't see enough to be either resentful or creepy - so you get to be judged by your personality and taste and the things you say, which is why I think you have so many people who really love your videos! And for all people, but especially women, having lots of frames of your face on the internet is always a risk. Deepfakes are utterly terrifying and maintaining your privacy and protecting your face is such a good decision.

I think of it like, this way, people can engage with me without engaging with me as a character, and together we avoid a lot of the expectations / assumptions that come along with that

Tbh - I don’t know if anyone else does this - pretty much all asmr videos I’ll play when I’m just gunna sleep, so I just turn the brightness low, turn the screen face down and play till I’m asleep - I don’t think I’ve ever ‘watched’ an asmr video, so face or no face, it’s all in the cadence really 🤌👍

The half face or no face thing is a good policy to have if you don't want the freaks bothering you, and the disgusting way they treat some female ASMR artists. The story of what happened to Jellybean ASMR is chilling to the bone (She acquired a stalker that went to some utterly terrifying extremes). The downside is that it's an approach that is pretty well acknowledged as having quite the negative effect on channel growth and view counts and reduces subscriber numbers significantly. And the reason for this is creepy in of itself! I guess you can't have it all because people just want to ruin good things.

I'm sorry to hear that about Jellybean -- I wasn't aware but that's such a shame, and very scary, and unfortunately all too common. As for my half-face decision inhibiting channel growth -- FOR SURE. I would love to reach other milestones but have mostly given up on them, because my channel hasn't really grown in years, and I'm positive a large part of that is due to my face. Sometimes it bums me out but I've made peace with it, because I know for me it's not worth the trade-off

@@MauveASMR I wouldn’t feel too bad about your subscriber numbers plateauing. Yes the half face thing won’t help but low growth and visibility is a general trend most ASMR artists are seeing right now. Because of a somewhat unique quirk about ASMR called the function factor, we are at a point where there is more ASMR content than there are people to consume it. It’s resulted in lower engagement and subscriber numbers across the board for everyone. Add quickly adjusting algorithm woes to it and you are definitely not alone. Hopefully that doesn’t sound too depressing but you get a bit of reassurance from knowing other ASMR artists are having the same struggle.
