As a child of immigrants, I always longed for American grandparents, because I wished I could talk to them about anything without a language barrier and hear about their life and experiences with no boundaries. I’m sure your granddaughter is really grateful to have you in her life. I long to hear about my grandparents time when they were my age and what their life was like, but I will never fully grasp their life story because I understand and speak the native language at an elementary/intermediate level and they do not understand English. I remember when I was a little boy and my grandpa took me to tombstone Az and the Store called The Thing. Back then cigs were about 1.22 a pack and I used to be able to buy them for my pops if he gave a call up to the local allsups by our house. Anyways, my grandpa suffered from bad emphysema and lung cancer and was on oxygen. As we pulled up to the thing store, I saw that all the employees were smoking and because the smell of the cigs would cause my grandpa to have a choking fit, I walked in at 6 -7 yrs old and asked the store if they would put out there cigs so that he could come in. They all said yes and when they told my grandpa what I did as I was in the back checking out toys, he began to cry and said that I was a wonderful young man. I’ll never forget him, and this guy reminds me of him.
