Hello,
the Vikings won the poll I had organized, so here you are! In this video I talk about who the Vikings were, how their expansion took place, and what remains of their heritage today. With a special "hej" to my subscribers in Norway, Sweden and Denmark!

Thank you very much. You are not at risk of hearing about unprovable things here (like esoterical stuff, conspiracy theories or alternative therapies). People may believe in what they want, but I do not support any of this. When it comes to history videos, I try to only tell things I am sure of, that look reasonnably credible, and that can be checked - especially to avoid spreading these historical urban legends that people keep telling even when they have been proved wrong. But I am just an amateur and I cannot guarantee every detail is perfectly accurate. As always when it comes to history, looking at various sources is crucial if you want to approach the truth.

I just wanna say that the "Vikings" were not a people. The Scandinavian people who went on Viking raids were mainly the Danes, but also the Sveas and the Norsemen (and the Geats, who kinda were like a mixture of the Danes and the Sveas).

pardon me----it`s Marie---- the Vikings had one of their first, anyway their then largest settlement in Haithabu (English say: Hedeby)---and Haithabu was more than less part of the old (cathedral) town of Schleswig ...the town in what is nowadays "Angeln'", it is the side of Schleswig-Holstein at the Baltic Sea...once one said "Angeland"...from there the Vikings (after quite some "interbreeding", not any barbaric violence, at least no brutal raping...seemed to have been a mutual attraction... between the Sliaswik=Schleswig population and the Vikings...who from there sailed with their, for that time, technically fascinating boats (e.g. the Nydam-boat ...which is an exhibit in the museum attached to the castle of Gottorf--- where I met Hamlet... okay, am not sure about that - but sure is that they sailed and invaded this lovely green island...(by the way: after a bit of slaughtering...they got on very nicely with the people (pretty mixed anyhow) )...and the name Angeland...Engeland...England So: was borne in Schleswig... and loved to play, before tourism started to conquer..., where the Viking settlement had left nothing much but traces, interesting for archaeologists etc., but I was a little girl and just pretty happily roamed Viking land (guess, I have got quite a lot of DNA/genes of, after all, my ancestors---I bet!!!---- Angelanders and Vikings!) sorry, am too tired to edit, accidentals so are possible but not in no way disrespectful! Thanks! The slow/soft voice is intentional: this is an ASMR video. Google can tell you more about ASMR if you wish, and if you want to give it a try there are thousands of videos on youtube waiting for you. People generally use headsets to listen to them and if they are receptive to ASMR, these videos may induce pleasurable physical tingles and/or help them to fall asleep.

Robert that was awesome when you are discussing about the Vikings the Vikings of Sweden explored and arrived in Rus (modern day Russia) then explored south once they did the Byzantines (present day parts of Greece & western Turkey) served with Emperors under Emperor's new name Varangian Guard acting as mercenaries perfect for hacking Arabs and defending Constantinople (present day Istanbul, Turkey) while the Western parts led by Norway & Denmark under 2 kings Cnut the Great & Harald 3 Hard Ruler Sigurdsson while Sigurd 1 the Crusader Magnusson participated in the Reconquest along with Spanish knights to kick out the Arabs from years 1107 until returning home by land in around 1111 please reply?

The Church built Western European Civilization. It is beyond debate that Christianity more than any other factor is responsible for the civilization that rose from the ashes of Greece and Rome to create a totally new synthesis what we call Western Civilization. Science, the university system, the great art that permeated every discipline in the west from painting to architecture the Christian Church and its patronage created all of those things that tourists by the millions come to Europe to see. I totally get secularism and the great benefits that have accrued to us via the separation of church and state but this total rejection and even demonization of Europe's Christian past and heritage is shameful, harmful to the education of the young and intellectually dishonest and has had a very negative effect on the quality of education in the west today. I love history, it amazes me what passes for education today. There was a time a century ago when the average 6th grader still took Latin in public schools. Europe was putting out geniuses by the millions. These are the people who built the modern world, who made countless scientific advances and invented technologies exponentially. It blows my mind the difference in quality of educational outcomes today. The death of theology and philosophy which was at the heart of the liberal arts education was the death of creativity in Western Peoples.
