I suggest making books. You need sugar cane for paper and leather to make books. You can enchant them and get some good perks. Focus on getting fortune 3 efficency v, and mending for your pick. Mending on it's own will be very valuable if you utilize an exp farm. Its probably one of the best perks you can get

You can make an xp farm from the zombie spawner you found. Also some torches are naturally spawning.
