I was reading that apparently monkeys make mouth sounds while grooming to signal cooperation and benign intentions to calm their partner basically, so now I have a theory that that's why we get ASMR, to calm us during grooming sessions with our partners. Regardless, I love it 😂

Monkeys are not very similar to humans at all. First of all, they have hands for feet. They have a totally different bone structure from humans. The don't have elongated noses. They can't stay walking upright like humans can. Most of them have long tails. Alot of them are covered in hair. And they have strange eyes. The only reason why anyone think monkeys are like humans is because people were forcefed Charles Darwin's theories. Also, you are likely only looking at the one breed of monkey that is in every textbook about evolution. Most species of monkey look more like pokemon than human. (Look at golden monkeys and marmoset monkeys. They look nothing like humans.) Even Gorillas look totally different than any human. They also act differently than humans, though, they can be trained to do small human things like eat cereal with a spoon. Monkeys and humans are as similar as dogs are to cats.

I wonder whether this might be some insight into why people get ASMR? The mouth sounds, the "personal attention", the touch, it's all shown here in primate grooming. Maybe we developed ASMR as a way to encourage grooming to strengthen bonds in our groups?

Great point. As you say it's on display in primates. A guy was recently on JRE who made a chimp doc and he mentioned feeling the effects of ASMR just watching the monkeys groom. The dude didn't use the word ASMR but that's what he described. I've thought too about the evolutionary origin of ASMR, perhaps it rewards focusing on _someone focusing on something_? But ASMR encourages you to get drowsy rather than alert to whatever the external focus is, which seemed like a dead end to me. I'm sure there is an evolutionary explanation. But also how odd that most people don't ever experience it.

👉 I could be wrong, but in the wild, some monkey species(macaques, etc) do the lip smacking thing as a way to show submission to higher ranking monkeys. Maybe they do the lip smacking to show submission to humans as well. Also, it would be beneficial to your relationship if you returned the favor and at least pretended to do the grooming thing to the monkey. In the wild, they build and strengthen relationships by grooming each other...

Skin tags, they're actually dead cuticles from your nails rather than just skin. A really simple thing to do is just cut them off with a nail clipper.
