When I was in tenth grade, we hosted a Ukrainian refugee family at our home for six weeks (my brother and I had to share a room in the basement while they were with us!) and I memorized a Cyrillic alphabet I found in a dictionary (this was, um, before the internet, LOL) so I could learn the language properly. They taught me how to write the letters in cursive and I got pretty good at it! I can still read printed Cyrillic (I only remember the meaning of a handful of Russian/Ukrainian words and a few verses from songs they taught us) but I've forgotten most of the cursive. This video brings back memories!! The best part was the mom did all the cooking for us, so we ate a lot of Slavic cuisine during their stay! Plus, because we were their only transportation, we went to their church and family events all the time; it was about as immersive a cross-cultural experience as one could have in the small upstate NY town I grew up in. It was an incredible time in my life overall and I still have a great fondness for the people and culture of Russia/Ukraine.

I know (yes-niyoo) how you say it but can only approximate spelling in Latin letters (spasibo == thanks) Russian spoken sound to American English using all Latin chars. This is so helpful and I will find a way to compensate you somehow for this if I have to go put a box out with a sign that reads "please help me pay for my Russian lessons!" :-) You make me very happy. One of the best birthday gifts ever. My uncle is proficient, whereas I can barely squeak by and my other relatives who could speak are either dead or too far away. Thank you so much *Professor* Lizi!

In American English when we speak of words in collegiate level alphabets with Latin alphabet that have marks like the й and и and T versus Tb we call them "diacritical marks." It's like the aumlat in Deutsche. I just wanted to let you know for your audience what a college level course in a language here would probably call it and for grammar we have syntax mapped out on things called paradigms to separate nouns from vowels, et cetera. Again thank you so much for doing this for me (and probably tens of thousands of others that are grateful for this sort of thing.) You probably have a good idea just how important it is for Americans that mostly speak our form of English to understand Russian cultural heritage and true history to foster greater understanding. Your work is critical for me right now. Thank you.
