Here's my alternate version to this story: When captured people go to freaky water world, their being gets split in half. Their physical half remains floating in freaky world, while their conscious half stays in the diving suit. When Sal goes to freaky world he sees his other half, but he knows taking off the suit severs the connection between physical and conscious, and both halves require each other to keep on living. There's an alien species of monster in the freaky world like the one from the movie The Tunnel that go around lapping up the blood gushing from the eyes of the physical halves. These monsters speak telepathically through images and emotion. They communicate to the divers that their lives are forfeit unless they capture more humans for their blood farm. That's why when the divers go back to earth they are so panicky, trying to find anyone who will just listen and believe their made up story. I could stop there but I'll go a little further: The captain of the ship was one of the crew members initially captured by the aliens. He was the only one to agree to go back to earth, the rest of the crew committed suicide, rather than live out their lives in horror. The captain represents a small minority of people whom, once captured, are morally okay with capturing others in exchange for extending their own life (potentially infinitely). The aliens even provide incentives to capture more, promising that if they just capture enough, they will return them to Earth in their original/normal form. Most of these morally ambiguous people start off too scared to give up on life, and quickly end it after a few trips between worlds. Others become manically addicted to the game, even to the point of enjoying the thrill of seeing how many more they can capture. SCP foundation scientists are certain that the splitting of the conscious mind from the physical body is an irreversible act, but they are unable to convince these manic minded individuals they are being lied to. Perhaps these individuals know the truth, but they've sold their souls so long ago they know there's no going back...

I don't think there's a deeper meaning. Just a very creepy premise. Maybe if Sal (or whatever the diver dude's name is) had eyes and teeth of a previously known character (even himself) you could speculate. One fun idea might be that the people turned into divers become halved. Half of their body (the physical half) remains in freaky water world, while the other half (the conscious half) returns to earth. Like it would've been real spooky if Sal found his physical half floating around in freaky world. I think the author could've explored it a bit further but just decided to end on an unexplainable but very creepy note. Unless people have other ideas - I'm out.
