So, if I'm following correctly, the rule of existential instantiation is basically a way of saying that two modifiers to x are not mutually exclusive, where universal instantiation says that one modifier of x is evidence of a second modifier of x?

Thanks for the question! What you're actually describing is the difference between a conjunction (and) and an implication (if/then). I used an implication as part of my example for the UI and the conjunction as part of my example for the EI, just to change it up, but I see how that could cause confusion. Conjunctions and implications can be used in both UIs and EIs (as well as many other logical functions). The real, practical difference between UI and EI is that UI can be used as many times as you want and instantiated into a number of different subjects, whereas (with a few, complicated exceptions), an EI can only be used once.

IF it's 8 in the morning AND it's Monday through Friday, THEN I will wake up at 8. It is 8 in the morning BUT it's Sunday, SO I may OR may NOT wake up at 8. I might perhaps sleep in until 10.
