Panic did a podcast a while back where they discussed how they came up with the idea for Playdate -- I don't remember if the inspiration for the crank was mentioned, but it was pretty interesting: podcast.play.date/episodes/s01e01/

Nifty idea, but at $180 bucks, I'm super skeptical about how long this will last in an ever growing handheld market filled with significantly cheaper handhelds that seem far more capable than this (outside of its crank gimmick). Especially since they seem to be trying to bank on their proprietary games and the hope that people will develop new games for it. If they can't establish a significant footing in the market, then the third party games probably come few and far between, leaving their own games as the only showing for this. I mean I guess if you're really into trying the crank and you've got the disposable income, you'll pick this up as an additional handheld. But not sure how many people that translates too. For the people that can only afford to buy one handheld, I'm not sure how many are going to choose the 180 dollar, tiny black and white screen device, that has a limited game library to boot. Especially when there's a number of quality retro handhelds on the market today between 40-80 bucks that can be loaded up with tons of games up to the super nintendo era and sometimes even the ps1 era. And if you go up to the $100 range or so, which is still significantly cheaper than this, you can def find handhelds that will handle ps1/n64 era games. And of course, if you have no qualms about it, you can often find these handhelds preloaded with 10's of thousands of roms on them. So as cool as this looks, I'm gonna wait on it before dropping 180. If it gets its footing and builds itself a real game library, then maybe I'll give it a go if the crank thing seems to hold more value than a novelty input method. Otherwise I'm probably passing on this, or waiting for it to tank and see if I can't pick one up much cheaper later on.

It's a cool gimmick but $170 seems a bit much for this.

The price is pretty high compared to other, more substantial game consoles, but the Playdate doesn't have the same economies of scale that come with the massive sales numbers companies like Nintendo can get, so Panic is probably having to spend more on parts than your average hardware manufacturer. I will say that the high price is offset a bit by the fact that 24 games are included, but yeah, this is something made for a more niche audience that's willing to spend a little extra on something unique.
