@ completely oblivious to the idea that chess is fun. I thought it was just for elitist snobs to prove how intelligent they are. In my defense, I was “taught” chess by a guy who refused to actually tell me the rules, how the pieces moved, what the pieces were called and call me stupid everytime I made a wrong move. This channel has single handedly changed my entire opinion of chess.

I think that on Qb5 just a6 and the queen has to retreat (since Qxb7 Bxd2+ loses the queen). The point is that since you hadnt moved your f1 bishop you are still one more move away from castling. But I am no expert.

No they don’t feel “plasticy” like cheap people pieces. They have a good weight to them and feels nice to the touch. They are not as heavy as big, weighted tournament chess pieces, but definitely not as light as cheap pieces. Somewhere in between. Works really well in my opinion.

The board comes with 2 extra queens. If you want to promote to, say, a knight and you already have two knights (exceedingly rare but possible) you are out of luck. However they do sell a “promotion package” with all the extra pieces you’d need for any combination of promotions if you want to be absolutely sure you can always promote to exactly what you want. It is not something I have ever needed though. When you promote the board prompts you on the touch screen and you can select the piece you want to improve to. Then you simply place it on the board on the promotion square.

If you already have v1 I wouldn’t buy v2. ChessUp 2 does have more features, the touchscreen is nice, piece ID is super nice, but they are continuing support for ChessUp 1 and it will get new features as well. ChessUp 1 is still a GREAT product.

It looks to me like the board is showing you what potential moves are good and bad when you touch a piece. Should it be doing that when you're playing an opponent?

Don't worry, it's not! When playing online, it only highlights available moves in blue (this blue looks different on white vs black squares). The board does offer red & green colors for assistance, but this assistance has different levels and is only available in local games (OTB or vs. bots).

@@gmcenroe you are absolutely playing at a slight disadvantage when playing blitz, simply because 1) you can’t premove and 2) you have to move your opponents pieces as well. On the other hand some people (including myself) play better on a physical board. My favorite is absolutely the slower time controls - 15|10 is the perfect sweet spot for me.

I own both a DGT board, a ChessUp 1, ChessUp 2 as well as a big collection of chess computers. I can say with absolute certainty that ChessUp 2 is more sophisticated, user-friendly and has more features than any other chess board I have ever tried. A DGT board is perfect for playing tournaments that you want to broadcast, because it looks and feels like a standard professional chess board. Both DGT and ChessUp 2 are great, but they serve different purposes.
