The game between Magnus Carlsen and Alireza Firouzja was the much anticipated clash of the World Rapid 2021. Magnus arrived 40 seconds late to the game. Was it psychology or was genuinely late to the game? Was this time deficit going to affect him? Alireza played the fighting Caro Kann! Check out the video to find out who came out on top!

I think Magnus spends a lot of time in the opening on purpose to annoy his opponents. You can see that Firouzja was visibly irritated by it and chess is a fight of two minds so that's an advantage for Magnus

To beat the undisputed world champion you also need a cool head and a strong character. Duda was also late, but Magnus, calm and unperturbed, told the arbiter not to start the clock until his opponent arrived (he also did it while waiting for Ivanchuk late, a few years ago, at the Leuven tournament)

Such an intersting batlle of the minds to see unfold. Magnus came late and noticed alireza already started the clock where you can see him raise his eyebrows. Then in the beginning of the game he takes a lot of time for just the first 3 moves. I think the purpose for this is first of all getting into the mindspace and getting the opening right calculating all the possibilities but also to hand it back to alireza and show him he doesnt care about wasting his time which annoys alireza, he looks around the room at one moment waiting for magnus to move. In the middle game magnus does some fairly uncommon moves with the pawns for example to throw alireza off and not letting him get into the sequenzes subsequentually throwing alireza into deep waters with him. Alireza i think is getting nervous by this point and backs off several times thus magnus wins the game by continuosly putting pressure on and not letting alireza get into the offence at all. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk haha

When you have to play the best move for 20 moves straight just to maintain a semi holdable position eventually you will crack. Magnus is like a boa constrictor squeezing life out of him one quarter inch at a time, slowly improves and never allows anything resembling counter play from his opponent when he senses he’s winning. Ppl may moan about his ‘style’ but the accuracy of his play is unlike anything in history, he is at the peak of his powers right now and everyone should appreciate it, won’t last forever.

Explanation-: now Magnus going to take his pawn to F7 so he can chcheck him, now oponent can’t take down the pawn becoz of knight. So, now he has to move his king to g7 to get release from check, now Magnus will move his queen to E5, now another check by queen. Now he has to move his king to G6 or H6, and rook will play his role by going F6 and its check mate. Simple 😊

@Secret Wars - Michael Jordan vids channel you are right, but it's not a move that gives any kind of advantage to black or something magnus was not prepared for. It's just players don't wait that long to break open the centre with all the pawns facing each other. Plus it is that easy, at least for Magnus, the difference between him and the AF is 61 elo points which is the difference between him and Karjakin, who is 18th. So his raw ability is straight unmatched. Everyone was disappointed with Nepo's performance but he is kicking ass against other people in this tournament. If you don't realise that how good Magnus really is compared to others you are not watching chess properly.

The Firo/Mango rivalry will be the rivalry of the coming decade. Kasparov used to frequently lose to Karpov in the 80s before finding his groove and completely trouncing him. He then went on to become world champion and remained at the top for the next 20 years. Not saying that will happen with these two, but if Firo continues to develop at the pace he is, there will be intense rivalry between the two. And that's great for us chess observers.

@@081_rohit8 I mean, I root for Magnus over everyone else, but I think he played the opening brilliantly, kept increasing the pressure in the middle game but somewhat frozen after Ng4 or something along that move number. Nevertheless, he won after capitalizing on the h6 blunder. I feel like some fans are just looking at the results and calling people (in general) gods left, right and center after every win.

Firouzja went ahead and started the clock, what a b-move. Magnus Carlen was late this year to the 2023 World Blitz Championship, but his opponent asked to not start the clock until he arrived. The arbiters still went ahead and started the clock. Magnus had like 30 seconds and still won. But still, I had immense respect for Magnus' opponent across the board, knowing that it's Magnus Carlen he is playing and yet he wanted no advantage.
