being a scribe was an incredibly powerful position, and it took a LOT of education and practice. that being said, i wonder how quickly the scribes could bang out these hiroglyphs.

@@DarthSidian exactly! plus, from the remnants of the scribes' work that we have seen, it's all incredibly polished and detailed, and they were basically doing the work of a court stenographer. it's a shame we'll never get to see the work of a master scribe from literally any era of ancient egypt

What you said around 9:24 about "...knowing the language and filling in the vowels yourself..." _because_ they aren't written is fascinating! Why don't they teach that in History classes? I think the notion of "an entire language needing to be lived to be learned" is a beautiful idea. It also makes sense that it would be mostly-spoken rather than written when most people could do only that: speak. That almost blows my mind. We take literacy for granted: languages used to be designed without it!
@catrina65412 жыл бұрын
that’s also how ancient hebrew works! nowadays people write the vowels byt in the torah, there are no vowels you just have to fill in the blanks w context clues bc youd know the language
@sweet.carolien2 жыл бұрын
It's the same in Arabic. Writing for children or extremely formal, ancient texts are typically the only times you will see the text fully vocalized.
@thisworldiswonka Жыл бұрын
@catrina6541 also shows a timeline for the fact that Hebrew was written basically as a reaction and rebellion against hyroglyphs. Israelites wanted to use their own code that Egyptians wouldn't understand but took the letters and made them into their own form, if you compare the alphabet they're practically the same. It's incredible

i can relate! nothing against ASMRtists with masculine voices, i just get anxious for no logical reason when i try most of them. this channel is one of very very few that doesn't have that effect, and it's so refreshing

There's so much quality in your whispering it's not even fair. You have an insanely soothing voice. Also (just to add insult to in- well.. insult to compliment? I guess?) With the "Combined Consonants" chapter I believe Consonants is spelt with an S rather than a second C. Sorry to be a pain😂
