ASOIAF Theories: How Bran's Story Ends

A song of ice and fire opens with Brandon Stark, the second born son of Eddard Stark. Some of you may be familiar with the concept of “The Monomyth” also known as “The Hero’s Journey”. In comparative mythology, the monomyth is the common template of a wide division of tales that involve a hero who goes on a decisive crisis, triumphs over the foe and finally returns home change or transformed. The monomyth is seen everywhere in popular culture, The Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, The Chronicles of Narnia, Dune, and also in A Song of Ice and Fire.
Bran’s storyline up until his very last chapter in A Dance with Dragons has followed the monomyth precisely. This could mean that Bran Stark is actually the true hero in our story. As opposed to Daenerys or Jon Snow.

On top of that, his friends die. I've always pretty much been one of those people who thought Bran was "The" hero as opposed to one of the heroes simply because his is the only plot that truly feels dedicated to the true threat. It is trust that Jon and Dany have ominous dreams about it and the former is trying to take it seriously...but the world politics keeps dragging them back. Bran is the only "Dedicated" mythological hero on site at the moment.

Bran will *not* become some emotionless robot in the books. Dumb & Dumber have completely ruined Bran's character and story. They don't even understand his story to begin with, or like it/him for that matter. If it isn't dragons, titts & ass, meaningless violence/torture/rape, juvenile jokes, shocking moments, pretentious speaches, or badass fighting they don't care about it. And if the aforementioned stuff doesn't exist in the books, they will just make it up. I think the monomyth is a good one not only to use but to subvert. This is going to be a REALLY dumb example to some people, but it's a personal one and popped into my head early in this video. I remember when I was a kid playing Ocarina of time, I got genuinely depressed when I realized Link could never return to the Kokiri forest without turning into a skull kid. The story was an exact monomyth, except that the hero could never return home. It subverted that aspect of the monomyth and that genuinely disturbed/ depressed me as a 12 year old used to more simplistic storylines. I think keeping to the monomyth archetype, then deviating from it sharply can be an effective way to subvert expectations and create a powerful emptional reaction. I wouldn't be surprised if George did something like this and deviated from the archetype at the last moment.

I don't think it quite deviates as you can return, only transformed... So rather than a subversion, I'd call it a corruption. You can go back, but you must pay the price, a price that makes the triumphant return a far darker journey.

I have always imagined he is the hero in this story. The last hero's journey, mirrored by Bran's journey beyond the wall to Bloodraven's cave, appears to the most important and to me the most compelling. His Stark blood combined with the black bat of House Whent make for a powerful skin changer. Jojen's Arc, Summer's Arc, and Hodor's Arc all were meant to boost Bran's character. As the story began with Bran, the story will end with Bran. Great video as always Quinn.

Great job in incorporating Joseph Campbell's work! I don't think academia has looked at ASOIAF properly yet and given it due justice so it's nice to see videos which take a more rigorous view. I think it also needs to be pointed out that GRRM incorporated some Eastern philosophy in these stories. The idea of the Third Eye is prevalent in Buddhism and Hinduism, the eye which gives second sight or being able to see things in the spiritual dimension.Greenseeing and hitting the Weirwood net is another name for the Akashic records (which Edgar Cayce talks about as well) or the Halls of Amenti which the ancient Egyptians discuss.

Dirty Giraffe I think Martin will have Theon executed by Stannis in Book 6. Sansa might plead for his life, but Theon’s betrayal is what led to much of the destruction of the north and probably Bolton’s decision to be a turncoat, so I doubt she will intercede.

Here’s my prediction: -resurrection: bran will be mortally wounded, and will realize his only way out is to finally accept the crow’s gift, and rejoin the forest, loose his body to the roots in exchange for inhabiting the trees. -return: Bran won’t return in body, but fully empowered by his green walking, he will become the protector of the north, and thanks to his skinwalking and dream communication he’ll be able to guide the stark in their journey, rejoining them through magic if not through flesh. Prediction for the show version of bran: yeah none of that. I think the Iron Throne won't exist anymore and he will rule from Winterfell. Also I think Jon's name will be Aemon Targaryen and he will give the crown to his younger brother (Bran), like the Aemon before him did. Jon has so many parallels with the Aemon's in the Asoiaf universe. No Aemon ever was king and Jon very likely won't be also. The wildling prince Aemon from Dalla and Mance was brought to safety and his identity was hidden. Sam also takes him as his bastard. Jon was also brought to safety and his identity was hidden. Ned takes him as his bastard. Dalla died with the birth of Aemon. Lyanna died with the birth of "Jon". So yes, I think Bran will become King also through Jon's hands. Jon's heritage will be significant for prophecies and magic. We know that king's blood is special blood. He not only has king's blood he also has Valyrian blood.

I always felt that Bran was the typical "Hero's Journey" and he is my personal favorite in the books. But, George admits to playing around with tropes and there seems to be a building ominous feeling when we leave him in ADWD and Melisandre's vision. Perhaps he will become anti-hero, even the antagonist? I hope not. The books begin with Bran, my wish/hope is that it will end with him, as well. Also... thank you for your Dune videos! Observing the Observer Maybe Bran really is the NK and ends up on the Iron Throne? He really wants to walk again, and has a habit of not listening to his parents/teachers/etc. He is always causing problems/turmoil because he goes his own way and doesn't listen. Maybe in the future he worgs into the Night King and chooses to stay "too long". This way, living in the NK, he regains his ability to walk and also be a warrior/soldier like he always wanted to be? Probably super far fetched and I haven't finished the books so maybe there is info in the later books that counter that thinking.

This was really good. Last year or 2016 winteriscoming.net did a heros journey analysis for maybe 7-8 characters. I can't recall all of them with certainty. It fit some perfectly--jon and dany obviously--and others with more flexibility--bran, arya, tyrion, jaime, possibly Sandor. Clearly the show has several heroes. Quinn mentioned GRRM's 'five to survive' (Jon, Bran, Arya, Tyrion, Dany) from his 1993 outline. I think they're all on hero journeys.

After watching this video after the show's ending and the reveal that Bran becoming King comes from GRRM himself, I firmly believe that Bran is ultimate hero. However unlike the show which half-assed it, in the books he is likely going to be some sort Weirwood God-King; holding the seasons stable and protecting mankind in this magical new age of wonders and terrors, while his Hand of the king governs the realm.

Yes, the great irony of Bran’s arc is that he will he the anti-hero hero - he saved the world but really can not participate in it fully due to his condition. After all is said and done we might expect Bran to be extremely withdrawn and morose, like Frodo. He knows he cannot lead Winterfell in his condition, so either Jon is legitimized or he cedes control and power to him. . Everyone knew from season 1 and Book 1 that Bran would be a central character in the series. If we take into account Martin fondness for bastards, crippled and broken things, we know that there are big things planned for Bran.

Bran will simply be the best person to rule, as he has all the examples of what went right and wrong in the past. He will be a sort of living computer. Perhaps he will retain some small part of the boy he was, but not likely too much. In the monomyth, the hero always makes a sacrifice, usually for the sake of his people.

The purpose for the greater knowledge of past present and future must be explained ... timelined and analyzed in the finality of the story, the denouement if you will ...

If Bloodraven IS Bran's enemy or a terrible danger to him this makes perfect sense. The cave where he goes to face his greatest enemy is the cave where Bloodraven dwells. The ordeal could be what Bloodraven puts him through or the inner crisis could come when Bloodraven reveals he's sacrificed Jojen to give Bran the power he needs, with Bran choosing to press on. As a result he could emerge as having great power over the weirwood network.

I've just realized how all the fan theorycrafting going on about "who is the true hero of ASOIAF?" means GRRM has quite successfully created a *_mystery novel_* , where the main mystery is not the identity of the culprit but rather of the hero.

I remember in AGOT in the chapter when he with the three eyed raven fly and see what is beyond the wall, he even sees jon, and keep forward, he sees the wildings fighting and running away of the wights, and keep forward until he sees something of ice and horror, literally he sees in my opinion the real origin of the others, or maybe the real great other and the raven says to him, thats the place where he must go, is like GRRM is already telling us bran will never return to winterfell or to stay in a cave, but to confront face to face the others or thats my opinion with that chapter in mind

Brandon The Broken, The Three Eyes Crow. Is it possible that Brandon the three eye crow, the one who visit the past, be responsable to all the "Brandon's" things? Like Brandon the builder with wis wall, Brandon who closed the Sea that lead to Skagos, Brandon who set fire to the ships. There where many Brandon's, and many did really great things. So if like, Bran get like Bloodraven, stuck to a Tree or something, could he influence the past so the future as he knows be assured?

Ace Boogie you should they're fantastic,,I'm not much of a book reader but found myself lost in them .Aince my first read thru 4yrars ago iv fine 2 re reads and man everything iv re read you see so much ,do seriously check them out
