Aspen's New MAX Display Flight Demo

With brighter screens, faster processors, larger font and a variety of other enhancements, the Aspen Evolution MAX PFD and MFD product line competes in a crowded market of retrofit flight displays. Still, Aspen's upgrade pricing is competitive-starting at $4995 for existing Evolution owners-and $10,995 for new installs.
In this video, Aviation Consumer Editor Larry Anglisano went flying with the new displays with Aspen's James Buck in his MAX-equipped Cirrus to take a look.

Interesting that the Aspen can't use its built-in GPS for that backup attitude solution. That would have the benefit of keeping it working on a battery-backed GPS. Pretty unlikely to have a pitot blockage and a power failure at the same time, though. Props to James for the Omega Speedmaster X-33 "Mars Watch". Great pilot watch.

So far the glass panels for GA has not reduced accidents. An old steam gauge panel is easy to use by anyone and does not require learning a glass panel in an airplane you are proficient in. Sometimes progress is a step back..

Way too much clutter on those screens.

Too much legacy thinking. They are much too small, too slow, and too cluttered with mimicking old mechanical gauges. An altitude is just a clear number, not a long mechanical movement. Same with speed. And pitch and heading. You don't need all those marks floating in the picture nor a clock dial as if it was an old compass. Just clean calm numbers at the bottom of the screen and a calm clear synthetic vision rendering. Planes marked, same with a map you can flip to and all closest runways in case of emergency. roads need only be very faintly marked if at all. you don't need 2, 3 or 4 displays. You just need one and big. Say 24 inches. And close within reach and easily viewable. It's not some distant thing trying to credibly recreate hell. Clarity. Serenity. No buttons.
