This brings back a lot of memories, drove truck up and down this hwy and hwy 3 from 98 to 2011, now that I'm back in Atlantic Canada driving truck,.Watching this video feels like it was all a BIG dream. Chaining up was a pain in the ass, don't miss that.

BC is nicknamed the "beautiful province of Canada" as I check it's provincial license plate. By the way, which 1 of the 3 freeways through the Cascades is more scenic in your opinion? I-84/US 30 in Oregon, I-90 in Washington state or BC 1/TCH Main Route and BC 5/Coquihalla Highway? In my opinion, I choose I-84/US 30 in Oregon through the Cascades and you can even see the Columbia River and Washington state nearby too.

Took this exact route to Merritt back in January after the snow cleared. It was so surreal driving through the mountains with 4 feet of snow on the slopes while Abbotsford was a balmy 8°. I just went an easy 105kmph and took photos as I went. There was nothing but a few transports along the way.

Lived in BC my entire life, from the Northern end up Terrace way for 24 yrs, then from the coast Chilliwack, Abbotsford, Surrey 'bout 17 yrs, and the Interior, Princeton, Kelowna, Penticton, Merritt 13yrs. These roads are as familiar as the back of my hands but I'm still as in love with them, the scenery as when I first traveled them. So, thanks for the lovely drive. :0)

You've really captured the essense of driving the Coq here. I recall the first time I drove it in 2013, how you can really feel that you've crossed over into some kind of temperate and lush rainforest as soon as you pass west over the Coquihalla summit through Hope to Chilliwack.
@AsphaltPlanet13 жыл бұрын
The differences in climate between the costal areas of BC and the arid interior really are in stark contrast with each other. Hwy 97 south of Kelowna through the arid interior is one of the most interesting drives in Canada in my opinion.

@@AsphaltPlanet1 yeah Hwy 97 down through Vernon and Kelowna is fantastic, especially since the upgrades a few years ago.

Loved the video! The Coquihalla Highway is fantastic. I was pleasantly surprised to see the 120km/h speed limit despite how twisty it is. It would never fly here in Australia lol
@AsphaltPlanet13 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. The 120km/h speed limit is the highest speed limit in Canada. It's kind of strange that the road with the highest speed limit in the country is a high mountain road with sharp curves and steep grades. I don't think 120 would fly here in Ontario either.
@compdude1003 жыл бұрын
@@AsphaltPlanet1 120 would make more sense on straight, flat, Ontario freeways. I bet a lot of people drive that speed anyway.
@denniswoycheshen3 жыл бұрын
@@compdude100 the section through the worst of it is a variable speed hwy. During the winter, rain, poor visibility and accidents and such they lower the limit. You could easily go faster during the summer when it's nice. The hard part is the long climbs, depending on what you are driving. My personal vehicle has no issue going up the hills, but my work van maybe does 96.

Australia is an even bigger nanny state than Canada. Low speed limits are nonsensical. Germany does perfectly fine with the Autobahn

The Coquihalla Highway is also a very busy truck route as an alternate route of the TCH Mainline. Even though it's a complete freeway which is continuous linking both the TCH, it's worth using it. Also, as you mentioned Highway Thru Hell, it's a relative show of Heavy Rescue: 401 to see how dangerous the Coquihalla Highway is as also a truck route.

Around 19:56 is where I had a severe semi-collision, rolling, car accident from wet snow in March 2021. Right into that grass centre strip, hanging upside down by my seat belt... this highway kills hundreds of people. To anyone who goes on it or wants to go on it, etc: please drive with caution. The road conditions change instantly.

By the time you left Vancouver, you took BC 1/TCH Mainline. However, it's good to see a freeway portion and an arterial in there, but BC 5 is an alternate because it has a freeway portion too between Kamloops and Hope as an alternate route of BC 1/TCH Mainline and you drove on the freeway portions in this video.

@@AsphaltPlanet1, most drivers took BC 5 between Hope and Kamloops bypassing the arterial BC 1 in order to save time. I mean, it's beautiful to take BC 1 to see the Frasier and Thompson Rivers and Kamloops Lake.

Great drive! Is there any reason why the maximum speed limit in Ontario is only 100 km/h? They need to raise the speed limit, that is way too slow.
@AsphaltPlanet13 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. Ontario upped the speed limit on three segments of 400 series highway to 110km/h a couple of years ago. This was done as a pilot project, but I expect to see the higher speed limit adopted to future corridors in the coming years.
