Does Thing ascension have any chance? It was my favorite deck before gitaxian prob and faithless looting were banned from it. Obviously TiTi is most likely dead with how crazy removal is, but ascention demilich seems fun if nothing else.

Probably not unfortunately. It hedged a lot of its acceleration from Gitaxian Probe but Looting being back gives it hope.

This deck has an admirable number of 4-ofs. It got me thinking, it would be cool if there was a companion with the criterion: "Your deck contains no fewer than 4 of any card."

They made all the companion requirements easy to spot if violated because all of them just ban certain cards from your deck (besides Yorion) which really limited their design space. I agree that there should have been other companion requirements that can only be seen with a deck check like the one you suggested. I actually think you could go further and do stuff like require 5 of every card to use the companion.

We haven’t gone far enough. Companion requirement: Your deck can only contain copies of one spell. Your deck can contain any number of copies of that spell.

I feel like preordain is mandatory in this deck and probably almost better than looting. Personally I also think artist's talent is probably better than highway robbery/gut shot and can really become a huge engine. I guess maybe my idea is a slower and more controlling version. Maybe both are good! Definitely respect your ability to brew decks and everyone evaluates things differently. Happy to see modern be fun again!

Saying preordain is better than Looting in a Phoenix/ lich deck that is specifically looking to put cards in the gy is a wild take. Preordain might be better than robbery.

@@danielolsen3514 My point is that preordain is very good. I'm not saying looting is bad in the deck or anything. I agree that you need to put cards in the GY, but that's why I suggested artists talent. I think preordain adds consistency and just helps you more often cast more spells and get to the three for pheonix. I guess personally the card disadvantage from looting makes me value it less, but really I think it would need to be tuned to see just how many cards are needed to consistently drop cards in the GY. My intuition tells me it's less than 4 lootings, while I would never play less than 4 preordain. Testing is needed though. I think if you add artists talent into the mix it makes the lootings less valuable in a sense because they are similar effects. And there will be times where you cast looting and are not dumping a phoenix or something great into the gy. I see your perspective, I think it will be fun to try and find out :)

@@colepatterson6408 looting doesn't give you card disadvantage when you put a Pheonix or lich in the gy, and sometimes you even get to do 2!

@colepatterson6408 Sure. Testing is always useful. My point was that Looting is THE cards that made Phoenix decks strong. As someone who has played Phoenix in modern & Pio. I would change a lot of other things before cutting any looting. The thing that got Looting banned originally was that it's not card disadvantage in the right decks. Phoenix being one of those decks. Its card velocity is very high. And its power is very high. Of note. An issue with artist's talent is it not being a instant/sorcery card itself. It weakens the decks' ability to chain spells for Phoenix/lich. It's why Spike isn't running Darcy/Bauble in this build. Every non int/sor in the deck is a big hindrance.

Tell me you never played against hogaak and oko lol. Nadu too. Grief and fury together were too much, but the rest of the cycle is obviously fine and fury would have been okay without grief imo.
