Thank you for the FANtastic review Wendell & co. Such a refresh when usually watching a review is nothing more than benchmark fest (it's not bad, but I just feel bloated with benchmarks). All features are well explained and some interesting RAM speed news on XT chip. I once disappointed of B550 pricing but with all those features and much stronger VRM than its predecessor, now I understand why.

I have this B550 Taichi board and the Steel Legend B550. The Taichi is the only one of the two that will allow the use of a dual NVME card in the second PCI slot no matter what the X16 bifurcation setting is set to. I am thinking about replacing my Steel Legend to make them equal.

The competition at this price range was the thing keeping me from pulling the trigger on some of the B550 boards, namely this one. Putting together a ryzen 3000 series system now and was looking into x570. Luckily two friends of mine both have x570 boards(Aorus Master which is an insane board and one of the ROG Asus boards..forget which one.) Sadly, both of them have a terrible fan whine when they get warm during gaming as mentioned in this video. AND they don't even utilize the PCIe 4.0 so not sure why they even have them. And then I thought...I probably won't either. If it works on the top slot to the CPU then I think that's all I really need. Pairing that with the quality VRM and other added features, some of these boards outclass X570 in my opinion. Based on what I need at least.

A little cheaper Option from ASRock is the Velocita, Extreme 4 or the Steel Legend which are basically the same Board with minor Differences. Whats missing is Bios Flashback and they have a Realtek 2.5G LAN Chip, also Wifi is just an Option.
@Geenrem4 жыл бұрын
Basically the same unless you're someone who really likes to push overclocking, 16 phase vrm with infineon pwm controller instead of 14 phase intersil and the memory isnt as overclockable but realistically you don't wanna go over 3800 anyway. Dont really see a reason to go for taichi unless ryzen 4000 becomes more overclockable
@charlie7mason3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for bringing this up. it really helped me narrow down my purchase choice to have it laid out that simply, especially considering what a sale I was getting on it. I would've gone for the Velocita because of how pretty it looks, but the current sale price tag of $140 on the Extreme4 is kind of unbeatable. Such a massive reduction.

My 3900x runs at an Asus B450 Gaming F with IF 1900 and DDR4 3800 without issues . I am not a Hardcore Gamer and the Difference of 8 Lanes to 16 Lanes 3.0 is small , i use only 8 Lanes for the Graphics Card , 4 Lanes for NVME ( in Raid 0 + the 4 CPU NVME Lanes = 2 NVME SSD ) and a 10 Gig Ethernet Card ( 4 Lanes , 25 Dollar E Bay ) If a look at it , oh boy , what 3 years can make a Difference , in January 2017 quad Cores still were state of the Art in Mainstream , thank you AMD for Ryzen . Now i have not only 12 Cores , i have an NVME Raid , 32 GB DDR4 @3800 , 10 Gig Ethernet at an 130 Dollar B450 Motherboard ... , pretty high Specs for Mainstream ..

He's right. For example rn i have rtx 2060 super and x570 rog strix e-gaming. It's kinda long gpu. And that's where the problem comes. The stupidity of putting a fan (and a rlly small one) makes not only chipset goes up to 60 degrees without doing nothing (literally just starting pc) but also when you stress it for example playing on 4k (like i did with my 2060s on dmc5) it makes chipset go around 68 - 69 degrees and gpu also. I even took down chipset's cover and moved gpu into 2nd slot and believe me it didn't help at all.

Wendell is it technically correct to say “3rd gen ryzen CPU’s” regarding ryzen 3,000? Or only for zen 3 stuff? If it’s only zen 3 stuff then ryzen 6000 will still be considered 3rd generation ? Bit of a shame if things continue to approach Intel levels of wonky naming schemes

An important detail to point out, in my opinion, for people who want a mini-ITX board: what's the point of going X570 ? You don't even have the place on those small motherboards for more than one GPU and one NVMe drive, both of which will be running off the CPU. And by the way, can anyone explain to me why we even need/put chipsets on mini-ITX motherboards ? As far as I know, most of the IO can run off those modern CPUs, right ?
@call_me_stan58874 жыл бұрын
Funny thing because I've observed that UNDERVOLTING my 1st gen Ryzen 7 1700X also gives better results. About 20-30 points bump in Cinebench R20. And it is 100% replicable on my X370-PRO.

The real question about purchasing B550 boards instead of B450 is : ... why? Get a 450 at half the price and change everything when AM5 and DDR5 releases.
@ramair3254 жыл бұрын
ddr4 is cheap (even for the high end low latency stuff), and ddr5 will be very expensive for the crappy slow dimms. So for many getting a 3rd gen or 4x00 series, or even a 3x00 series cpu will make a lot of sense.
@OverlordActual4 жыл бұрын
IF you are willing to buy a system now and then gut it when AM5 and DDR5 releases you probably aren't worried about cost. That's brand a new CPU, Motherboard, and RAM all of which will come at a premium. If you would wait for prices to come down then it would make more sense to buy b550 stick with it and be happy.

I have that super common Gigabyte RX 500 series card as a decoration on my shelf lol. Rx 580 8GB. I see it all. The. Time. Especially in vids on YT. I have a b450 board and 5700XT with 3600. Makes me want to upgrade mobo for VRM, but more so connectivity and IO/storage etc. Plus the 5700XT isnt doing what id like, had driver issues etc. 144hz1080p isnt even super stable in newer AAA games. Almost wanna build a whole new 10600k based RTX 3000 system when it releases. Maybe i live in a box and just build PCs and steal internet :D
@Geenrem4 жыл бұрын
Upgrading isnt worth it if you already have a b450 motherboard and 3000 series cpu, b550 is the last chipset on the am4 platform so the mobo wont support ryzen 5000 etc.

... the more I listen, the more I think what I want for my 4950X is an X-570, not a B-550. I don't like the idea of a chipset fan, but I hear from people the only time that thing ever even spins up, is while you're flashing the BIOS. If you had 4 or 6 different PCIe4 M.2 drives on there, and you were running it as a web server, with hundreds of people collaborating on shared projects, like say part of the Australian Tax Office, or the Dep Social Insecurity database, then you'd (maybe) have issues with the chipset fan, but any single user doing any normal desktop use case... The big advantage of the B-550 was it was supposed to be considerably cheaper, except it isn't. The ones that're made to a high standard, (which is many of them, not all) cost pretty much the same as an X-570. But your 550 chipset is far simpler and doesn't have as many channels...

It was the same thing with B450 Boards They tended to run the chips and perform better than X470 did, unless you bought a very high end X470 motherboard.. AMD keeps doing this Crap with the motherboard's.. Bet if you stuck an XT chip in this B550 board it would hit and hold it's turbo clocks all day with a 280 Rad and up.. I have the X370 Taichi and I'm going to try and keep it for the next 3 years I figure if I can get a 3800XT to run on my board and with a GPU upgrade in 6 months as well Either Big Navi if it's what it's supposed to be?? Big If I Know.. Or I'll have to go 3070 maybe a 3080 if it's not to much, And that should hold me at 4K 60Hz for the next 2/3 years for gaming.. Really Hope RDNA 2 is as good as people are saying.. Rather give Team red the money, all around better business practices right now..
