The song lyrics are a bit sad. William was about to get married to the lady and was walking to the marriage place when soldiers forced him into the military. The lady came to find William a year later to find William had moved on to another lady he met during his service. It would make sense to move on, away from the lady for a year in the military where you could die at any moment. William Taylor’s story is a tragedy

In a version of my country it has sadder version of a melody and it's about William Taylor and Sally Gray instead of lady gay. And the song was also named Sally Gray instead of William Taylor. As a kid I thought the story is Mulan reference but later I found this original shanty and I was like Oooooh- I get it now XD (translation) There was once a beautiful pair in York. Young man was William Taylor and the lady Sally Gray. He was so handsome and manly and she beautiful like a rose petal, They were so in love with each other. The whole world was theirs. But Sally was in the eye of another man. He was jealous and made it so William is taken to the army. In a short time it was found out who was to blame But in the meantime young Taylor was already walking with grenadier regiment. His beloved girl was not crying for having ruined life. Who thought she gave up he doesn't know Sally Grey. She shortened her hair, hidden her ring, And clothed in trousers and a blouse she let herself to be recruited. They trained her left and right, running further and closer, And the ring fell off her pocked right infront of the sergant. Sergant said You are no soldier, you are a girl like a rose petal. It would be a waste of you here, tomorrow you come back to your mother. She said I am looking for my brother, I don't see him around. His name is William Taylor, that's all I know about him. If you are his sister, I have a sad news for you. With the knife he shortened his own life. He's dead for seven days already. The girl took out her sharp long bayonet, She stabbed her own heart and that was the end of Sally Gray.

Its a tavern song so its not one you get on the ship. Honestly the only reason to hang around taverns is the tunes so I dont blame you but there are some pretty good songs so I do recommend spending some time there.
