the original templars of this series actually contrasted the ideas of the assassins beautifully. now they’re just stereotypical bad guys

Yes they did. In fact in the gta verse, the Templars way of control had a divergence from its Isu worshipping roots that they want control of humanity and driven with a unified purpose. And this even includes pushing for space colonization and scattering their form of humanity’s control across the cosmos if necessary. Yes. That Templar branch would be about going beyond what their creator beings could not do.

idk in the original games i.e 1 and the ezio trilogy the templars are just evil bad guys in 3 black flag and rogue is where they actually get a fair shake. and Rogue is just flipped templars being good guys are assassins being evil

I hated in Unity when none of the targets had a post-assassination conversation, especially because they were still from all different walks of life. I hated how Syndicate's kept boiling down to "you'll never retake London." "uh huh, will so." "nuh uh." "uh huh." [dead] Closest thing we got was the bus lady showing how ingrained into capitalism she was or whatever. I hated Flavius in Origins. "I'm the greatest! I have an apple of Eden! This is all my character is! I was introduced FIVE MINUTES AGO AND I'M THE MAIN VILLAIN!" Even the Scarab and The Hyena had actual motivations that made them a BIT interesting. I wish this game hadn't even had the pieces of Eden. Just show the early version of the Templars doing their thing when the Assassins didn't exist to stop them. Odyssey, oh GOD Odyssey. No post assassination conversations, way too many targets that were just... there. The seven heads of the Cult who weren't Deimos ALL should have had a major mission associated with them and a conversation. Or an arc building up to them. The guy who started the war. He's just hanging in a temple. Nyx? THAT could have been an interesting "figure out who it is" mission, but it's just the one citizen in Athens with a sword. The Peloponnesian and Spartan leaders in the cult? DID have missions but their reveals were uninteresting. And Aspasia. She could have been SOOOO interesting. But she isn't. Valhalla has the post-assassination convos, but most of these people either had very poor build-up or they just sputter nonsense before they croak (the knights that roam the map come to mind). Considering this game shows the beginning of the Templars, they could have done some interesting things. With Mirage, I pretty much knew what to expect. The targets area BIT more interesting than the last few games, but only a bit. Great video, man. This villain group used to be so interesting and memorable.

The Order of Ancients imo are more like a precursor to the instruments of the first will, they literally had a member called the instrument

The problem with the order is that they fused the goals of the templars and instruments of the first will together rather than having the goals of the instruments all together, the templars only cared about Isu technology and not the Isu themselves while the instruments care about the Isu and their artifacts.

So the lore is basically: -The Order of the Ancients worshipped the Isu (AC Odyssey). -King Alfred Rex was born in the Order, but was deeply christian, so he eliminated the members that still worshipped the Isu and focused the organization towards a Christian-centric peace-seeking Order (AC Valhalla), which later became the Templars. -They were more cynical than Alfred, and see Christianity only as a means to their world-controlling ends (AC1). -During WWII, they founded Abstergo Industries as a front (AC2 truth segments). -In the modern day the Instruments of the First Will are a templar satellite organization that wishes to return to their Isu worshipping roots and revive Juno (AC4). -That group got destroyed alongside Juno (AC comics. Yes, the modern day plot climax is solved in a boring ass low-quality comic book) -Alan Rikkin, CEO of Abstergo, is killed by Callum Lynch, so now his daughter Sophia Rikkin is the closest thing to a main villain (AC awful movie). I really hope Red and Hexe reactivate the templars with new modern villains, since pretty much every recognizable member is dead now...

I get what you're saying, but at least end of valhalla kinda made a bit more sense of all of that with Alfred deciding to rebuild the order from the ground up, transforming it from order of the ancients to templar order

Crawford Starrick was a classic kind of Templar. Motivated by greed and lust for control. It’s interesting that you put the cut off at 2014.

I think your thought process on Templars in the earlier games compared to the more recent games is a bit skewed. The "Templars" in the more recent RPG games that take place near the birth of the creed are not established. They don't have guidelines set, or rules that their orgainzation follows, so that's why their disjointed. AC suddenly turning the Templars into the Order of the Ancients in my opinion, is a great way to develop the story instead of making it worse. It lets us see different kinds of power and control, matching the many diff historical settings of the games. That's why they seem so religious and cultist like. I mean what else can they go off? There was no templar-esc blueprint to follow.. It basically boils down to personal prefence of games at this point. I like origins and odyssey, so I like the cult of kosmos and order of ancients. Yes flavius was forgettable, but the bigger picture of egypt was fascinating to see. I liked seeing the how the order gained control of egypt through ptolemy and cleopatra, I liked seeing their thought process on how pieces of eden hold the power to further their ambition, and I also liked seeing how the order sought to extend their influence to the roman republic and beyond by using figures like julius caesar.

Yeah we can talk about the actual characters within the Cult and Order as being not the most interesting, but the idea of each group stays true to the series very well imo. They are meant to portray that a group of people have always sought to be in control through the history of humanity and it has taken many different, but similar, forms. And alongside that we are being shown how the Assassins took different forms as well. The eternal fight between Assassins and Templars is really an eternal fight between people who want to control other people and those who resist. It is incredibly relevant and meaningful to the series as a whole.

I totally see where you’re coming from - but the crux of my argument isn’t simply that changing them was a bad thing - I’m saying that the change could’ve been made in a way that makes each games particular Order/Cult members far more intimidating, and as an effect, memorable. I think the only time this was really done was with Aelfred, because his power and influence was made present in the writing throughout the entire course of the game. Correct me if you feel I’m misinterpreting but it seems a number of people that disagree look at the bigger picture as more valuable than the individual character writing of each game, and to me that’s a lens that i can’t get on board with. If the isolated writing of the order/cult members was top tier, then the bigger picture would be extension be even more phenomenal, as was done between 1-3

yeah I hear that, they could've done a better job making the order of ancients more lasting and memorable, esp origins with flavius, and aspasia. They fumbled on that regard, but overall the motives were cool so I can hear ur view on how they weren't implemented effectively. @@scarabyt

Assassin's Creed started as a Science Fiction serie integrating common 90's and 00's plot schemes and conspiracy ideas with Freemasons and what not booming after 9.11 (Da Vinci Code, Deus Ex, etc). The original plot played along this theme, even playing with popular conspiracies of the time like the 2012 Mayan Calendar Apocalypse. It attempted to produce a commentary on how contemporary West engaged with the unknown as a post religious society. Thus the heavy emphasis on Illusion, on rewriting Biblical events not as miracle but derivative from an unknown source of power left by an extinct people, bla bla. It was grounded and wanted to tell something. Since Origins and the turnover into an RPG series, Assassin's Creed evolved into the Fantasy genre, dropping the more serious political tone of the original games toward a more simplistic and Manichean plot: Templar bad, Assasin good. It's a natural evolution given the orientation of the series, because historical RPGs lean much more easily into that genre. Thus, Those Who Came Before were merged into Mythology to integrate common fantasy tropes like straight up magic weapons, Medusas, Minotaurs, Half Breeds, Fighting literal Gods etc. It also fits with the common tropes and mainstream media of the 2010's and 2020's with Game of Thrones being the flagship of Historical (Hard) Fantasy and immensely popularizing the genre. The Templars don't work anymore because they don't fit in a Fantasy story. They lean too much on a being on the edge of real history giving the conspiracies surrounding them (and thus their involvement in major historical events) just enough meat to be credible and make sense in the story. Had the series stayed grounded it could still work, but I feat Ubisoft went to much astray in quest to cater to the most profitable trends of the time...

The Templars just haven’t been the same since Black Flag, in AC 1 3 and 4 they were excellently thought out (Ezio’s Templars I do find quite basic and bland except for Rodrigo and Ceasare), they stumbled in Unity but I actually like the idea in Syndicate with each Templar controlling an aspect of society (medicine, transport, finance etc) although they did feel cartoonish and weren’t executed brilliantly (pun intended). But the order of ancients has been the real setback they’re just a long list of targets with no real story impact

Templars were never the OotA they started with King Alfred after the order was “destroyed” but they became the instruments of the first will

Honestly, I think the writers of AC3 had a missed opportunity to have the freemasons be antagonists who affiliated with the templars or had goals similar to theirs. It would've allowed for a little more diversity in the narrative instead of having the antagonist being just another templar. The assassin's oppose those who want power and control over the people, and the templars are not the only ones who seek that.

Well with the last trilogy we have the originstories of the hidden once and. Order of the ancients. Hopefully we can have nore titles onwards after 1100 AD with focus on the templar/assassin war again. And a new otso berg

Honestly templars went downhill after 1st assassin’s creed imo even if there’s a more noticeable drop in quality in 2014 Average ac 1 Templar be like: My lifetime experience trying to help my fellow man has led me to the unfortunate conclusion that he must be saved from himself, that what the Templars seek is necessary to attain true peace and minimize our collective suffering. Average Ezio villain be like: Si si i lika da rape anda murder an di moneey Da Templars Dey helpa me dedicate my time to my favorite hobby: exploiting and mocking da less fortunate izza bellisimo

Come on dude you didn't think this video through. One could argue that because Origins, Odyssey and Valhalla are the chronologically first games, the story had the Advantage of writing the Templars however they wanted because someone can just say that they eventually evolved into the Templars of the original AC games.

Don't forget, even the protagonists got more boring....just like the templars were rebranded as the order of the ancients, the assassins were also rebranded as the hidden ones....whose goal is what? defeat the order and why? no idea, there is no "creed" on either side anymore, much like modern culture just bland and amoral....lol

It's important to remember that the cult of kosmos and order of the ancients aren't really the same as the Templar order, and putting them on equal terms does a disservice to all 3. The hidden ones aren't really the same as assassins either. It's just background history for the lore. Or like using a flash back to show us context.

@scarabyt they won't all be winners, man. But Valhalla had a compelling main enemy, as did odyssey. Origins was a little lax. Rogue was a new twist that I honestly thought was interesting at least.
