Assassin’s Creed Nexus VR isn’t just another fragmented tech demo, but a fully realized Assassin’s Creed game that benefits greatly from its new medium and breathes life into the familiar Ubisoft formula. Running across rooftops in Renaissance-era Italy and sneaking through the streets of ancient Athens is a blast, and the fact that none of that made me want to hurl is a testament to just how much Nexus takes advantage of the Meta Quest 3’s shiny new hardware. It’s unfortunate that combat seems like an afterthought compared to the rest of Nexus’s polished systems, and occasional technical issues and immersion-breaking bugs definitely pulled me out of the experience from time to time. Even so, Nexus has reignited my interest in virtual reality, as only dancing through the streets of Venice as Ezio could do - and it feels good to be back.

Remember - making a game on a standalone VR device is the same challenge as another developer making a big game on Switch instead of PC. And for that, Ubisoft have done quite well.

VR presents all kinds of unique challenges. Locomotion, hand tracking, comfort and motion sickness settings. Porting a game to switch is just lowering the resolution, lighting, and textures mostly.

Switch games run on lower resolution coupled with lower frame rate. Whereas the games on quest have to run at a consistent 90fps (quest3) and at 4k (2 displays 2k per eye) so its insanely difficult.

@@twistedyogi not exactly, games almost never run at the max resolution. There are exceptions of course but don't expect heavy games to do so. It's probably at 80-90% of the max resolution

Quest 2 also has passthrough and if it's anything like it is on quest2 when used for quest 3 it will be very difficult to see the screen accurately

I’m surprised they didn’t leverage any AR into the narrative/experience, like having the animus overtake your real surrounding environment, the modern day characters talking to you in your surroundings, etc. The story being told to the player in the real world would’ve made up for the performance issues, which are also surprising since this must run on the Quest 2, can’t imagine how poorly it runs there. As is, there’s no reason not to wait for a PSVR2 version.
