Such an on point review! It’s frustrating because they did improved a couple of things from Origins but they did so many moronic and absurd decisions. The level scaling, the grind, the damage sponges enemies, the fire behaviour, the mercenaries system, no shields (in Ancient Greece... WTH!), and so many more! I think this team just doesn’t like to do AC games. Think about it. Black Flag is a pirate game. Syndicate was a Batman style game. And finally Odyssey is a MMO inspired action RPG that shares little to nothing to AC..
@joeyacevedo5267

Odyssey’s interpretation of Ancient Greece is so nauseatingly colorful. Remember when you went to Greece for one of those Naval missions in Origins? It looked just like one of those old renaissance paintings of Greek Myths. It was dripping with atmosphere and a sense of believability as a place. Meanwhile in Odyssey, I NEVER felt like I was in a real place, something that Origins managed to accomplish effortlessly.

well another thing Odyssey throw away is the tomb's designed, compare to the pyramid in Origin, all with it own design and challenge, it even make me feel like something gonna jump out at me anytime i enter one of them but Odyssey's tombs are all the same thing and instead of come up with some puzzle, they just throw snakes in there with bunch of spike trap that completely pointless. I pretty much just run as fast as i can to get it done for the skill point.

to be fair, Odyessy takes place during the golden age of the greeks while also at the beginning of the war. Origins takes place around 50 BC to 30 AD I think, when most of the known world was conquered by the Romans or were forcefully allied through conquest

Totally agree, but it's not only the colors. The giant statues, the mythical creatures, mystic places and a bit over the top fantasy weapons and armor... with Odyssey most of the time I had the feeling to explore a kind of "Ancient Greek Disney World" but not the believable recreation of a historical place or region. Something Origins was way better at.

**********SPOILERS********** Dude you hit the nail on the head when you said it felt like a worse version of the Revelations ending. I literally thought the same exact thing when I inevitably KZbin searched the ending of odyssey, (because ofcourse I refused to buy this imposter of a game.) I was in such disbelief I gave them the benefit of the doubt assuming, oh it's the "bleeding effect" finally something familiar but no. It was real and it was garbage. I even went to watch the ending of revelations afterward to remind myself of golden times. Even though the ending of odyssey was like the next level in terms of bonding with the ancestor of you can even call it that I guess, it was leagues behind that pivotal moment of Ezio accepting his fate and speaking out to the phantom who he only knew by name. I think that even just the barrier of mortality being between both Ezio and Desmond made the moment so much more epic. I still get chills just talking about it and especially rewatching it even in this day and age causes my eyes to water a bit. But that's when I realized, that game despite being nearly a decade behind in terms of technology and graphics had more impact then this modern next gen story made me feel nothing. I never thought I'd play an AC game that's story made me feel nothing. I still wonder if I'm even awake right now. But I NEVER EVEN KNEW about those Ten Commandments. That makes it all the worse. God. But Thank you for sharing your input. I always value it very highly. So I agree. This is not an Assassin's Creed game and it's why it's the first game since Brotherhood I haven't bought and pre ordered the collection edition for. It's also why I've decided that if they don't return to true form in terms of lore and even historical accuracy, I'm done with "Assassin's Creed."

Based on your narrow subjective view of what "a true AC game is". I see the core elements of AC being; a good story meshed in history and legend ( check still there), parkour (check still there), epic takedowns of targets ( still there just no longer holding your hand to force you on a linear path to your target), various interesting side mechanics like tower defense or naval battles ( obviously the long list can not all be included but as one things are like naval warfare so check) The biggest changes are the combat, which instead of just waiting to counter kill one enemy after another in a nice neat line is more dark souls esque ,which is an improvement in my opinion. Also stealth has evolved to join the modernization of such gaming mechanics. Better AI, requires tactical thinking and use of terrain, abilities, and timing to execute properly. I do miss social stealth but also recognize how gimmicky it was. I would love an evolved version to make a reappearance. You may disagree with which elements are more important or which/ how much of these Need to incorporated to be "an AC game" but that is merely semantics. Also It must be pointed out that LAZER is a click baiting fake who changes his "views" to fit whatever self serving narrative is in at the moment. For example, he actively perpetuated an , at best ambiguous misinformation, or at worst outright lie; that odessy "broke the lore" before the game was even out. Very little story information was available and he persisted in this to garner views. He also completely flip flopped his position on origins's microtransactions. He defended the game before launch pointing out its optional nature. Months later he jumped on the hate bandwagon, to once again garner views by pandering to the ever angry victim gamers, and attacked ubisoft for the system, even though nothing in its presentation had changed. His weak justification was that a certain cosmetic and weapons pack that was "not worth it".Clearly he does not understanding anything about wealth creation and subjective value. I could go on but you get the idea; everyone do not trust anything this mental midget says.

@@Vichingo23 I had figured my thoughts were clearly stated, apologies for confusion. First off this was kinda of a PSA not specifically a reply to you; that's why I did not send to you and ended with "everyone" . It was to get some information out that is needed whenever Lazzer spouts his misinformation and lies. Second why am I here if I dislike Lazzers lies? Well, personally I do not isolate myself within an echo chamber; I examine multiple sources and viewpoints I dislike regularly, if you want to isolate yourself in such a fashion feel free. Also, a good missionary does not merely st as y with the converted, they must seek out the ones who are not. Thusly, were lies are told is where truth is needed most. Third, my argument was never to convince you to like the game or direction, as that is subjective, but to disperse this notion that it is " not as n AC game".

It was so gimmicky though, IMO the Cult would have been replaced by the order of ancients. Having so many different shadowy organizations is getting tired. Instead of getting an origin story about the assassins brotherhood this game should've been about the origins of the Templars and how they took root throughout the world. Anyway I feel like AC games should be more like guided story telling that you play through (like GOW) so that it follows the commandments directly because that's what made the original trilogy with Ezio so good. It was excellent storytelling that captivated the audience who experienced it. Giving the player major choices in someone memory that you shouldnt be able to change is B.S even if its fragmented DNA it doesn't explain the modern day protagonist scene with the staff of Hermes.

So I agree 100% that this isn't an assassin Creed game. However, it simply can't be anymore. After unity and syndicate people got tired of the formula which you read in this video. The franchise was dying and could have been killed off completely. The point of origins was to reinvent what a AC game was, and it did. And because of that people loved it. Odyssey was to continue the changes origins made, and it did. The 10 commandments you read can't be used anymore because the series was reinvent in 2017 because of franchise fatigue.

@@memecliparchives2254 No. Odyssey builds on what Origins was. It feels more of the same because that's simply how game development works. Origins had 4 years to create something new and we're successful, however Odyssey had 3 years, but that's not entirely bad. They used assets from Origins so they didn't have to reinvent the wheel twice. Games take a really really long time to develop. Look how long it takes rockstar to come out with a game. So in order to push them out faster they reuse assets and build on top of that. I believe Odyssey may have taken a different approach to the series as a whole, and they definitely gambled on it, but it should be praised for trying something new. Not everyone is gonna like this approach, but that doesn't matter because what they looked at was sales of unity and syndicate. If they stuck with that and kept pumping games out in the same manner, sure there would have been the hardcore base, but obviously that base wasn't large enough to hold the franchise afloat. Odyssey apparently sold the best on this console generation so far, so I feel like they are doing something right.

Not to piss off fans. But more so to make money. If they called it Greek yogurt gladiators they wouldn't make as as much money. So they had to slap on the Assassin's Creed logo. Wouldn't be surprised if they made a First person shooter and named it assassin's Creed.

I really appreciate your views and opinions following the assassins creed legacy and everything involved. However, I've noticed you've become very biased in the way that you judge the franchise, savagely critiquing the smallest details because they haven't given what you, as a fan, want. Which is fine, it's natural to be disappointed by what a game offers, especially when you've come too expect the most from the series. However, it's counter productive too judge the individual game by itself if you're going to compare it too the rest of the franchise anyway. That being said, there are a plethora of connections drawn between Odyssey and prior games. It's a story diving further into the mythos of the first civilization. Ubisofts 10 commandments for an assassins creed game were created for the Brotherhood, not for mercenary descendents of the Isu before the Creed existed. As a dedicated fan myself, I'm grateful that Odyssey takes even more steps too further expand and progress the lore and world of Assassins Creed, even if we dont have a hood or hidden blade. Even with the plot holes and inconsistencies. After all, most of our actual history is shrouded in much of the same. We've had protagonists that are Assassins, and some that were Templars.. why not the Isu.? I do enjoy your content, just wish you'd be a little more open-minded sometimes. Can't wait too see your reaction too the next game

+Yo Momma Shows how much you've played the game, because regardless of the lore, (which is still upheld) the gameplay and story and its writing are the best it has been for a very long time. The story is the best since revelations, and gameplay is the best it has ever been IMO, and according to a vast majority of reviews a lot of other people's opinion.

+Yo Momma first of all I finished the game and I only saw the store about 80 hrs in the game, and you know why? Because of the bullshit some reviewers are spewing about the grind. They might have a review deadline, nobody else does. The game wasn't meant to be rushed through it, it was meant to be played by partaking in the countless other side activities simultaneously, it can hardly ne defined a grind.(And this is a fucking huge RPG for god's sake, you should know you are in it for the long haul if you buy it.). There is nothing wrong with having a few micro transactions in a single player game, if it is not pushing you towards it. Odyssey doesn't. Second, this carries the MD story forward in ways that it hasn't gone in 4 games. It provides a connection to origins before it and to the games following it. Unlike the standalone Assassins vs templar battles in different settings that was boring everyone to death. And this game focuses on the First civ (a main pillar if the franchise) a hell of a lot more than any of the previous games. In other words this game is more relevant to this franchises overarching story and future than all the games since black flag.

To me, the Big Reveal exposition in the end of the Cultist storyline is where Odyssey finally fully links into the Assassin's Creed lore with a strong implication that the protagonist has been a central and pivotal figure in all events between the past and the modern day. The big problem is that Ubisoft's writers fumbled the ball in making this sufficiently clear and not requiring a huge amount of player interpretation.

I care about the AC series and from what I understand the franchise wasnt always always about the assassins and the templars the first civilization plays a major role in the universe and there artifacts are the reason they fight each other because those artifacts wield great power for them to achieve there goals. Aslo everything has a beginning you know like the hidden ones was before the creed and the cult of kosmos was before the templar and yet they both have the same goals. So yes this may not be your genetic AC game but this very much fits in the lore/universe of AC.

How did you say it's subjective and then say your view is a fact in one sentence? From my perspective, the new AC is not better, and not for nostalgia's sake. I always wanted changes to be made in AC and for the franchise to evolve. But the changes that I am seeing are not evolving the franchise. Choice of character, dialogue options and multiple endings (even within the modern day depending on the chosen character) do not fit within AC. And not to mention how it lost its entire identity with regards to the Assassin story the game is named after. Changes should have been made on the already strong aspects, especially land navigation and social stealth. They are not trying to tell a story either, with no continuity in mind and very weak script and lazy writing. I wish that I'm in a position to say otherwise, but this is how I'm viewing AC's state as of right now.

They didn't throw him away, both games have been in development for years, and what I have noticed in AC since the Ezio era is that the focus has shifted from the character to the setting, nothing happened on Greece during Bayek's time, so they opted for the Peloponnesian War which was a very important period in Greek history. Also, the setting of the game doesn't always need to be at a pivotal moment in history. Look at ac brotherhood, it's set in the ruins of rome with almost no defining event happening, but what it lacks in that storyline, it makes up by focusing on the assassins' brotherhood, and the secret war between them and the templars. An ac with bayek could do this very easily, by focusing on the newly formed brotherhood and waging the secret war. There was so much potential but yet thrown away

Unity had the love interest and father figure be a templar to show how not everything is black and white when making decisions. AC3 you play as Connors father who is a Templar. It is not a problem that you are not an assassin because honestly, you can be either assassin or templar. Its because it has nothing to do with what came before. But the Cult of Kosmos does become the Templar organization (possibly The Order of the Ancients as well?), and the protagonist comes into possession of pieces of Eden which leads into one of the prime reasons there’s conflict between the Assassins and the Templars... so it does still uphold rule #1 (that being it all happened within the Peloponnesian war).

And also how this system is presented to you : Exploring the world to find clues about certain cultist, Then unveiling their identity and finally tracking him down throughout whole Greece. Something similar was done in Origins and other AC games, but this time Ubisoft perfected it.

I haven't had the chance to buy this game, but I really want to as I love the time period it is set in. I'm sure that I'll enjoy the game and it'll probably be one of my favorite games this year. That being said I can see why a lot of hardcore Assassins creed fans are disappointed in this new installment in the franchise. It certainly isn't that similar to the older games, and definitely has a different feel to it (from what I've seen) and it loses a lot of the mystique the original games had and that's what made them special unique. I really don't know how they can progress the franchise forward, as many got tired with the old formula, while many don't like the new style of game the last two iterations had. I hope they can find a good middle ground, but I don't know how that can be achieved. Anyways, great video as always.

I love this game, and I love the direction that the series is going...I’m not sure why people don’t like the premise, I think the assassins brotherhood had been played out, even rogue had the AC title and it was about a Templar...this game adds a 3rd group to the mix and lets you play as the closest thing to a person from the first civilization as we have ever gotten. It’s based in Greece and they gave you a character who was as close to a Demi god as we are likely to get. It’s a great game.

Yo Momma the thing is, this isn’t a box of detergent...this is a fictional universe and it’s multi layered. They can do whatever they want with it, it the highest grossing AC game ever made so I’m guessing your in the minority opinion. If you don’t want to play it, that’s fine, it’s your choice and no one is going to force you to play this awesome game, I just think you getting hung up on the name is stopping you from enjoying this epic RPG.

Yo Momma you realize you keep touching on the same argument no matter what I say right? Your argument is that Ubisoft isn’t doing the right thing and I disagree, you say that it was just for a weekend but only time will tell...I say we revisit this argument after a few months and see if it’s following your prediction or mine. As to your pathetic whining, leave that shit out of the conversation next time so that we can have a real intelligent conversation.

I’ve played the game and enjoyed it, how dare I...go fuck yourself you whiny pathetic piece of shit. There, I stooped to your ignorant level, does that make you happy. Now either play the game or not, but if you don’t play it, your opinion on it is shit.

Honestly, I broke at Syndicate. Unity wasn’t that bad as I personally didn’t really encounter any glitches, or I simply didn’t care. Syndicate got worse and worse the more I played it and I really hoped that this year break would work. It did. I genuinely love Origins! But then Odyssey released. Really cool, or Assassin’s Creed game

For me this is a good game, a new perspective for AC gamers, I love all the side missions both in origins and odyssey, those question marks on the map are meant to help the player to explore, but the player still has the discretion to explore that part of the map or not

Just thought I would say... good video. One thing you missed though. The race to the spear is talked about it cuts scenes out of the animus and it explains that they need it to find Atlantis before the templars do. There is written documents that you can read in the game that tell you this and about abstergo chasing them.

EDIT: I know that this comment is really long and probably nobody will read it... I agree on many things, but there are some points that I disagree with. The thing that Assassin's Creed lacks in comparison to Witcher is the quality of the side-quests/writing, but I think that it would be ignorance to not acknowledge that the writers for Witcher have more opportunities for good variety since they can add a magical twist to things. But even with this there is not excuse for weak quests. I think they should have put in less quests with more effort put into them. Longer side-stories which are not just 10-15 minute distractions. I think they should have waited with the release until at least early 2019. I think that only exploring time periods with Assassin's and Templars is very restrictive. Look at the sanctuary in AC2, most of those people are not actually assassins. Should we never have games that revolve around/feature them? I think that would be a missed opportunity. No Babylon, on Persia, no ancient China. I think that it is a good idea to explore other setting in the AC universe.But if they are not called actual AC games what should the name be then? The AC universe has no specific name to use. Would it have been better if the name of the game was Odyssey an Assassin's Creed story? Or Odyssey a story set in the AC universe? I mean was there any doubt that in the "normal" sense Odyssey is a spinoff? Because I looked at it always that way. Still I really liked your review and I respect your opinion.

Most of those statues in AC2 were of assassins at the time. Game explicitly called them assassins and states they were some of the greatest of their own kind. Origins and Odyssey retconned that, which goes with his points just fine.

Yes, it is a great action RPG. And the ending of the cultist/Atlantis storyline prove that it is an Assassins creed game. It would also be great if you made a follow up on your video about a Bayek sequel. You are great when it comes to narratives so it would be cool if you could give us a beginning, middle and ending of the next chapter of Bayek :)

i think you are right for the most part. it was held back by being an AC game, it could have been so much better as a brand new IP. but i still think it was a good AC game, even if it didnt follow most of those commandments set by the original dev team. i think moving forward with the next AC game, hopefully coming out in 2020 or later, they should set events after Origins and tell more stories of Assassins vs Templars. i feel that this is as much an AC game as Fantastic Beasts is a Harry Potter movie, i know its a weird comparison but the way i see it is even though it doesnt have an Assassin vs Templar story it still has relevance to the AC world, like finding more Isu artifacts, having the cult of kosmos be a pre-form of the order of ancients which becomes the Templars, and just continuing Layla's story in the modern day. Great review man, even though i dont share you view completely it was still enjoyable and you had a lot of very good points. glad you enjoyed the game too.

they keep claiming the game breaks lore but they cant give any examples. the only thing they really have are these 10 commandments that were written by someone who hasnt worked for the company in almost a decade. they are mad that its straying away from Patrice's original vision without even trying to see the new vision Ubisoft has for the series.

You know why everyone points to the commandments as proof its breaking the lore? The commandments point out the lore of the series. In an easier to understand term, these are: Every game should focus on the Assassin's vs Templar war. Where is that in this game? The protagonist should never harm innocents, but also be able to tear through enemies at the end game: When in this game you can tear through as many civilians as you want, and all actual enemies are damage sponges who are more difficult than they should be. Everything should be explained thoroughly and realistically: Unicorns and Pegasus'. The commandments are the guidelines for an AC game. You work all of them in, and go from there. Origins and Ubisoft Montreal managed it, but the Quebec team fucked it up. They shouldn't be allowed to make AC games, especially after Syndicate and now Odyssey.
@RamirezR

@@balar8757 the commandments aren't the lore, they are Patrice's vision of the AC series and he hasn't been a part of AC for a long time now. the commandments don't define AC

I really appreciate the way you did this video, and you make a lot of good points. However, some things of note with the 10 commandments you mentioned. Most of them the player could choose to follow. I for example, never kill innocents. It's all about what you as a player choose to do. Which I think is exactly what they were going for. I understand why a lot of people could say it isn't an Assassin's Creed game, but in my opinion they're just choosing to not make it one, yourself included. This isn't meant as an insult at all. I totally see where you're coming from and understand why you feel that way. I simply think you're incorrect and holding yourself back from enjoying something and acknowledging that Assassin's Creed as a whole has simply changed. I like to think of Odyssey as a sort of spin-off prototype for what AC has become, and I really really hope that the future involves more RPGs based directly on the Assassin Templar war. You have to admit that the old format was getting stale, and in my opinion, full blown RPGs that are much more closely involved with the main focus of AC would be amazing
@1nicko29

Origins was the prototype. Odyssey is the second RPG style AC already with some improvements and some new short-commings.

New Subscriber, seen some of your vids here and there, but anyways, I waited for over a year to get the game, and of course I got it w/ the season pass. I LOVED Origins, but hated Unity. So when Origins came out it gave me hope for the franchise, but the main reason why I waited so long was because if I would've gotten it at launch, I'd be waiting anxiously for them, and btw, the DLC's were one of the bests imo. I'd also give the game a 8.5 out of 10. I don't know about your gameplay, but I had audio issues. The character's would "act" out their scenes, but the audio would either be delayed or not come up at all. Finally, imo this may have been the best AC game. Mainly due to its decision based options. That's my rant, keep up the good work.

I was trying to articulate this on my Twitter earlier, this is the first AC game I have played since one I picked up on PS2 I think? I found the game lacking at times, but couldn't put my finger on what it was that was stopping me from loving the game completely. Honestly, I think your review is well thought out and helped me organise my own discontent with this game... Not sure I will pick up another AC game again.
