Yeah. And people who like RPG sees this as a good thing and like it because it's their genre of preference, and have no realisation or feel that it's missing the soul of what made it great. Because of that, it's a bad game IMO.

But the fact is it's not even a good RPG! I've never felt like any of my decisions affected the story in any way. You can just skip through all the dialogue and end up with the same result as if you were actually "deciding". But all this said, it still had good stealth, cool assassination abilities, a decent skill tree and fun combat, it was a fun game to play. Boring and repetitive after a while but still fun. Valhalla on the other hand has nothing of that, it feels like every task is designed to take you longer to complete just to stack up the hours you spend in the game: Wanna open a chest? Better look for a key. Arrived to the destination area of a mission? Better remove the marker that shows you where you need to go so that you're forced to pull out your otherwise useless raven to see, that'll squeeze another 10-20 seconds of gameplay. Finished a part of the mission? Better ride your horse half a world away from where you are now, for no reason just because the NPC randomly teleported there even tho the story mentioned jack shit about them moving. It's like Ubisoft knows that at this point they can just throw any shitty game at us, as long as it has the AC brand slapped onto it, we'll buy it.

I've taken a different approach to the AC series. I didn't grow up playing them so I had no loyalties or nostalgia for the old games. I started by playing the in chronological order, starting with Odyssey and I actually enjoyed the game as an open world ancient Greece game. I have played Orgins, Valhalla, AC1 and am currently in AC2. AC1 was not very engaging in my opinion and I actually didn't like it but I played so I can get the full AC narrative. I am liking AC2 right now as I am halfway through the game so hopefully I can actually fall in love wit these old games the way AC fans do. I am most looking forward to playing AC3 for some strange reason, and Unity. I actually loved Valhalla and Orgins and know its good for an open world game that really should not be apart of AC.

Red Dead Redemption 2’s open world was amazing. On my second play-through I honestly prefer exploring the world instead of doing the boring story missions. Exploration feels so organic and the world feels truly alive. Even the NPC’s are written so well that they feel like they actually belong in this world and have a purpose which makes encounters so much more interesting. It’s just such a rich experience all round. Odyssey just doesn’t come close.

I just got Odyssey a couple weeks ago with the RPG trilogy set because I started playing the AC games during Quarantine, and I can barely play it for an hour a day because it's just soo boring. Origins was interesting and the XP gaps between levels weren't that large. It only started to feel grindy at the end of the game, which made sense. I'm on level 10 and I'm intimidated by the almost 10,000 XP points to get to the next level so I can get to the next main quest.

I've had a weird relationship with Odyssey. Since I usually don't play RPGs, I had not enjoyed Origins that much. I still tended to play it like a classic AC. Then Odyssey came along, so of course I was forced to get into the RPG mindset in order to get through it. Which I did, and I even liked it. Only problem is, then I returned to Origins with my improved knowledge of RPG mechanics... and oh boy, I enjoyed it SO much more than Odyssey.

to me, the fact that youre playing in a beautiful version of Greece makes up for a lot of the flaws in this game, im so immersed in the ancient worlds that i dont really care about the annoying mercenaries or unneeded nation battle system. also i didnt mind the grind, as there's enough good story content to play along the way to make the more basic side quests feel like a nice pallate cleanser. also the story and charecters and writing are way better than the game has any right to be.

As i think about it, the main issue i have with Odyssey is the general lack of grounding in the game. It felt like you exist on the world and not in it. There was soo much to do and see but a very limited way to interact with the world. The lack of grounding is what tends to make gameplay very bland. Think of Red dead 2 vs Odyssey and imagine you are moving from region to region and lets assume there is no dynamic interaction with NPCs or combat, just traversal. In Odyssey, its simply movement and the only options to egnage with this movement is run or on a horse. Either way it's just mindless movement. The game even adds 'abilities' and systems that make it even more mindless, like not taking fall damage and the fact that your horse can just run full speed and yeet off a cliff with not much consequence. Couple that with that fact that you can climb absolutely anything means the gameplay is reduced to just pushing the analog forward towards the marker and everything in between ends up just becoming a chore to get over. Interesting environments are reduced to simple obstacles with this system because it doesn't matter if you are in a forest, mountain, valley, canyon or ocean, just push forward till you get there and you will get over any environment. Now with Red dead 2, the horse is vital to traversal for various reasons. Firstly, the open world is more dangerous and challenging when you are on foot. There's different environments with different requirments and weather conditions, animals that will only attack you if you are on foot and not on horseback plus different environmental harzards for different bioms. Secondly, your character has a stamina bar and hunger system and can't climb anything and everything. This means it's not ideal to just run everywhere since you will probably need to rest and eat and is not inly faster but safer to use a horse to get over certain terrain. If you stray too far from your horse, you legit feel stranded in the middle of nowhere, the game is a whole different experience on foot and on horseback. Your horse also needs to be maintained and steered carefully as you can't just zone out since it will stumble on rocks or even buck you off if you keep mashing the gallop button. All these things make a simple thing like traversal from region to region more engaging and immersive since things matter. In Odyssey and with UBI game design in genral, nothing matters, everything is just eye candy and cosmetic. On top of that they add ridiculous fantasy abilities that even further alienate you from any sort of grounding or immersion. UBI take freedom too far that their game systems lose any focus and end up clashing, they give you a mechanic but turn around and make it pointless by having another mechanic that completely overides it. The horse is just a gimmick because you can yeet off any mountain and climb directly up as well making the horse pointless. This is just for traversal in reagards to the open world size, the same general issue can be said for most other gameplay features. Nothing matters.

2:01 omg the "quicktime events" in Unity were soooo monotonous, I can't believe you used that as an example. Basically 4 or 5 extremely simple things with no atmosphere or tension that were always basically the same... and you did them hundreds of times. You couldn't walk for a few minutes without being encouraged to catch another thief, or go over there to stab someone. The balancing was so off. They would be great if they happened occasionally, making the world feel more alive and real. But they were so frequent they had the opposite effect, making the world feel like a monotonous video game. I genuinely preferred riding my horse through Odyssey's emptiness to that. Gave more of a feeling of reality and wasn't any less easy...

Christ I don't get all the Odyssey hate. It's in my top 3 alongside Black Flag and Revelations, with Unity being no 4. An amazing setting, a fun protagonist in Kassandra who I put in the top 3 with Ezio and Edward, and the most satisfying combat in the series, with Unity being 2nd. Stealth is still more than viable, unlike Valhalla where you get spotted instantly from half a mile away, at night, in dense fog, in a forest. They brought back the naval gameplay with the cool trireme overhaul, which was briefly shown in Origins but wasn't a main feature then, and it blew my mind the first time I realised I could board an enemy ship, kill the enemies, loot the treasure and hop back onto my ship in real time as the enemy ship sank, unlike Black Flag which threw the brakes on in every naval engagement with a loading screen and menu after a boarding. I loved being able to specialise my character for stealth, ranged or combat, just like in Unity. And I never once got bored exploring the map in Odyssey At the very least I don't get why Odyssey gets all the criticism and not Valhalla. Valhalla is even larger than Odyssey. It took me 70 hours to get the platinum trophy for Origins, 100 hours to get the platinum trophy for Odyssey., and it took 130 hours for me to get the Platinum trophy for Valhalla. The map itself is technically smaller but the number of things to do in each region is significantly larger. Was there room for improvement in Odyssey? Of course, enemies should definitely have been less tanky and the grind could and should have been lessened and, while I personally never had any issues with stealth in Odyssey, the option of the guaranteed stealth kill feature in Valhalla was a good idea to include for those who would want it. The mercenary system was fun but definitely needed work. I didn't like how mercenaries can track you from anywhere in the entire open world. I prefer how Origins Phylakes and Valhalla's Zealots are tied to regions and can't leave them. It was quite intimidating in Origins when an enemy managed to light a camp's beacon and it would call the region's Phylake to your location, with the horn announcing their arrival and everything. That was much cooler and more dramatic. And my single biggest wish for the new AC games is that they would re-include the sandbox assassination missions from Unity and Syndicate. Having your targets roam the world in real time sounded like a cool idea on paper, but in Odyssey and Valhalla its so anti-climatic to discover a target's identity, only to then find them just standing around in a market place somewhere. Bring back the Hitman style assassination missions from Unity where you scout the location in a little cutscene, are notified of opportunities, guards, entrances and unique kill opportunities. Those missions were the highlight of Unity and should have become a mainstay of the franchise. Having said all of that, Odyssey is still among my favourite AC games. Exploring ancient Greece is one of my favourite experiences in my entire gaming life. I loved Kassandra as a protagonist, and I loved the gameplay, and Valhalla disappointed me for being a shell of what Odyssey was.

I feel like a Karma system would have been easy to implement in this game. All spartan/Athenian kills while being detected should affect a reputation system with that faction. While I agree with you on the open world and the game as a full AC title, AC Odyssey is a solid game. Odyssey's biggest weakness is the Assassin's Creed license, but not in the way you think. The best they could do with it is to have it as a separate IP or make it a spin-off title if they still want it to connect with the AC universe. A simple title change like Assassin's Creed Presents: A Spartan's Odyssey or something would definitely give a semblance of uniqueness and identity and not have it remind you that it's the Animus with a present-day story like classic AC, just keep the story in the time period without it breaking immersion. You can still have the demi-god aspect without it being out of the ordinary with the title change or IP if they want to go the extra mile. As far as the world goes, I don't mind how massive it is, they recreated ancient Greece to a tee and I like having that freedom. However, as you said, it has a lot of dead space with nothing going on and nobody doing anything until you go have a pointless cutscene for a boring side quest. Also, the Peloponnesian War is happening in full swing in this game, where is the war?! That is the first step in making the world feel alive, having the war with battlefields and skirmishes on the road fill in this dead space. Not only that, there is very little to no wildlife in this massive world; you see a couple soldiers fighting, and have a bear or something come out of nowhere and do something to us or the NPCs. The synchronizations were BS as they did not reveal the map and just gave you a fast travel point, and minutely upgrade your eagle's perception compared to classic titles. The mercenary system should have been a highlight in the game, but it wasn't utilized to its fullest potential. They could have implemented a Nemesis System like from Shadow of War to add replay value and more freedom with your own personal stories in the game and have these mercenaries be around in real time to also fill in the boredom. Same with the Conquest Battles, they could do massive battles like they have and add strategic advantages when you weaken the defenses of a region or aren't strong enough, thus giving the replay value a boost and allowing players to play it to their own style rather than just mash the attack button with the spamming of demi-god abilities with the enemies having inflated health bars (that should go to the combat in general.) Odyssey is a solid RPG, but it has glaring issues that should have been looked at in development and tweaked if not reworked. I know this was a long comment, but I had words and thoughts I needed to get out because there was a lot of potential that was wasted with this game. Thanks for reading.

Been a fan of the franchise since the original . I actually quite enjoyed odyssey . Enjoyed it more than origins . I grow tired of people complaining when open worlds aren’t as good as Witcher 3 or read dead . 2 games that are considered some of the greatest open world games ever . Just because a game doesn’t reach that status doesn’t make it bad . There’s something in between greatness and awful . And also it’s a huge misrepresentation to act as if you hav to do even close to all the games side content if you don’t choose to . I finished the game n was well over the Mac level for the story quest n still hadn’t even been to a quarter of the islands and didn’t 100% all the places I’d been . It’s a big game but it doesn’t force you to do nearly all of it . I also quite enjoyed the story . Even though it wasn’t at all about assassins I liked how it tied in some stuff with the isu and pieces of eden . Idk def not my favorite creed game but it’s crazy listening to people trash games that def provide fun and are probably slightly above average as if they are 2-3/10 games .

Well said. I also think the hate for Odyssey is incredibly overblown. So many people seem to resent Odyssey just for not being like the old AC games. It reminds me of the Devil May Cry Reboot game and how it got 0s and 1s on every public review site because people hated on it for changing Dante. I remember the Angry Joe review and how he actually ranted about how stupid and unfair those reviews were, and how it was wrong to rate a game that was actually still a solid 6, 7 or 8 out of 10 as 0 just because its not what you wanted it to be, rather than considering it by its own merits.

I also prefer Odyssey for its gear system and the abilities that you can use, along with the different enemy types, be it in terms of troop types or the mercenary system. As someone who places a lot of emphasis(which is weird since it is ASSASSIN's creed not warrior's creed) on the weapons and combat and for the most part not being a big fan of complicated Parkour. Having lots of different gear types and perks, a simplified parkour system along with the different fighting styles of enemies to actually force me to think of how to engage the enemy instead if mindlessly spamming the "counter" and "attack" button is something that I greatly appreciate in Odyssey. Although I would agree, the world is too massive and it can be a bugbear at times to travel to the other side of the world to complete a quest.

Open worlds need to be like Witcher 3/ RDR2. RDR2 gave the perfect amount of stuff to do to make it interesting to explore. Witcher 3 had too many 'question marks'(especially in Skellige), but the game is beautiful, has amazing OSTs, and the side quests are interesting, which more than makes up for it. There are some things I do genuinely love about Odyssey-like the crazy love affair with Alkibiades. Or Mykonos, a densely laid out and beautiful bit of open world (that I wish had more to do in). But I do wonder if my fondness for Odyssey is primarily about the story I created in my head, and not the actual story I played. Bayek is absolutely the better protagonist, and wonderful acting, though I felt let down by the whole ending mission and sequence. The loading screen historical factoids in all three of the latest games tend to be trash inaccuracies, but I loved climbing a pyramid and the lighthouse, and the sense of wonder of discovering a tomb after crossing a desert waste, and the music overall. Odyssey had... it was... um, I liked the volcanic island? Did I mention Alkibiades?

This is one of these games where I would take a picture every 5 or 10 seconds but I don't want to spam my whole map with pictures lol. On top of that, everything seems so interesting that even though I already once 100%ed it and this time while replaying I promised myself to not do it again, I still clear out some locations on my way to the main missions, because I can't hold myself. Whenever there is a question mark, I'm always like "No, main story now, focus on the main story. Ahh, fuck it, I need to check it out". The combat is a bit annoying with bullet sponge enemies but still it's quite fun and enjoyable. Yeah, Odyssey may not be a proper AC game but it still is an amazing game nonetheless.
