For Assasins creed 3 Ubisoft actually got ahold of Iroquois and Mohawk Indians to correctly portray their own language. They weren’t trained voice actors, but they cared more about authenticity than flashiness. That game actually serves as a time capsule for a dying language that we may not have forever. Many Japanese people, are angry now because we don’t feel respect from this game to Japan even though the game location is set in Japan. We felt some kind of respect, for example, from the Ghost of Tsushima. In the Ghost of Tsushima, even tiny behaviors, gestures, or conducts are well-researched and applied to the game. Yes, I see some strange depictions or sceneries, but they are fine because it’s a game as some say and we still feel respect from it. That is why we can have sympathy for it. On the other hand, we don't feel respect for Japan from AC shadows. I see Sakura in April, rice planting in June, and Japanese persimmon in October at the same time. It seems like having Easter eggs, 4th of July fireworks, and Jack-o'-lanterns at the same time. Yasuke has a samurai katana sword on his right waist, not his left. Tatami mats are square, not rectangular. But this is OK, like as you say it's a game, right? But I'm afraid to say that this game, the AC Shadows, Ubisoft crossed the line that they should have never crossed. We feel that we have been got involved in Western DEI movements. I’m an AC fan. There are many AC fans in Japan too. From the first title, in this AC series, the main characters were selected from local people. But in this AC shadows, they suddenly changed this rule, and not a Japanese, an African guy appears from nowhere, smashing the heads of Japanese people as if he deals with zombies and claiming this is the normal conduct of Japanese samurais. Samurais had never acted like that. It is fine if Ubisoft developers say from the beginning “This game is 100% fiction”, but instead, they say “This game was made based on real history, and in feudal Japan, cutting peoples' heads was normal in their daily life” but this is totally wrong. Their attitude has been sending and will keep sending wrong messages to people overseas that there was a black samurai in Japan, Japanese samurais were crazy, cruel, or something like that. In fact, not only on KZbin but also on many social media, people say “Yes, there was a black samurai” or “I know samurais are awful.” Do you think those opinions make us Japanese happy? I know some of them say these on purpose to ironically critic Ubisoft. We are also feeling the alteration of history. Yasuke was not a samurai, he was a sword-bearer. It is said that he was originally from Mozambique, taken as a slave to Japan by Italian Jesuit, Alessandro Valignano. Yasuke met Nobunaga Oda, ruler of Japan in Feb 1581. Nobunaga bought him from Valignano and gave him a Japanese name, Yasuke. Yasuke served Nobunaga for 15 months until Nobunaga was killed at Honnouji temple and captured by Nobunaga's opponents, Mitsuhide Akechi and his followers. It is also said that Yasuke was not killed by Mitsuhide and taken back to the Jesuits as a slave. It’s hard to understand for Western people that just picking up a samurai sword on the street and keeping having it, doesn’t mean he has become a samurai. Samurai is a title to be granted. Any samurais were selected from noble families by their rulers. I think the Night’s title can be its Western counterpart. Samurais were trained from their childhood. We don't think he could become a samurai, who is a well-trained, skilled sword master, in such a short period, only one year and three months. Furthermore, to be defined as a samurai, by his master, he needs to be given at least all of the following: a samurai katana sword, samurai armor, family name, family crest symbol, and land. Yasuke had none of them, but still, Ubisoft developers say “Yasuke was samurai” and again “This game was made based on real history.” Ubisoft developers even claim like this "We cannot have sympathy for Asian guy as a main character." "We were looking for - our samurai-, someone can be our eyes." We think Ubisoft is a group of racists. These comments from Ubisoft are totally unacceptable. Recently Ubisoft deleted some of these messages after people claimed they were wrong, but I still see some others on media. Again, I have to say that in the AC Shadows, Ubisoft crossed the line that they should have never crossed. I often hear this "Who cares about such a racist thing?"
