Ever since Assassin's Creed 2, revenge has played a big part in nearly every Assassin's Creed story. Many of the games have it as a primary motivation for the protagonist and even the ones that don't, have elements of revenge in their narrative in some way. In this video I discuss Assassin's Creeds "obsession" with using revenge in their stories, why they do it, and whether or not revenge stories have been overdone in Assassin's Creeds storytelling...

Yet when I look back at the course I'w ran... there is no man or woman that I loved left standing beside me." The only AC protagonist that was driven by greed and in the end... he got what he wanted... but at the cost of everyone he cared for. Edward J. Oh absolutely, I was thinking about that while making the video and realized "Vengeance" isn't really a good title for that story anyway. I made it a point that Arno isn't necessarily seeking revenge on Shay, he's just fulfilling his duty as an Assassin. So Vengeance probably wasn't the best title for it but people in my comments suggested it and I thought it had sounded cool at the time. If you have a better title please let me know lol , but also at the same time I don't think having "revenge" be a part of the story is a bad thing. So long as it's not overused and a crutch because they can't find a different motivation for the protagonist. Which is why in that story I didn't make Arno going after Shay purely about revenge, even though he would still obviously hold a lot of hatred towards him for killing his father.

@@masterassassin791 Coming up with titles isn't my strong suit lol but I could still see it being a main theme especially with Connor being part of the story and acting as an older mentor to Arno. Maybe Connor could be the one to nudge Arno from wanting revenge for his father become his primary motive because Connor almost went down a similar path. If Connor's own motive in AC3 had been vengeance, he would have killed Washington on the spot when Haytham told him the truth, which would have left Charles Lee in command of the Patriots and given the Templars exactly what they wanted. As Connor said in the moment, his mind was clear enough to see through Haytham's manipulation and recognize Charles Lee still had to be stop. Even more so, we also know Connor eventually forgave Washington because Connor refers to him as a friend in the DLC. So I think that could be a reminder for Arno not to lose sight of the bigger picture and remember WHY stopping Shay would be very important.

Interestingly, Altaïr also had a revenge subplot with Salah ad-Din. He never manages to kill him, but in the book it is mentioned that when the idea was discussed with Al Mualim, he was eager to do it to avenge his father, but in the end he didn't do it, because he didn't want to create unnecessary chaos just for his personal revenge. It's a bit like what happens with Connor, who decides not to kill Washington because he understands that that would only be more problematic. It is quite interesting that twist in revenge stories, that are frustrated in favor of a greater good

I kind of wish Ubisoft wasn’t afraid to make a character that’s not immediately likable. As you said, the revenge plot is an easy way to keep the protagonist sympathetic. But you’re really limiting yourself in what kind of stories you can tell if you don’t have the courage to make a character that the player wouldn’t want to identify with from the start. It’s something I really appreciate about the original game - it was kind of ballsy of them to have Altair start out as a complete jerk. And I think that also made Black Flag really refreshing, that through a big part of the game, edward isn’t SUPPOSED to be sympathetic. And it's also more thematically appropriate in a series that deals a lot with questions like what is right and what is wrong, to have a protagonist whose actions you're supposed to question at times.
@seanw8005
@seanw8005 Ай бұрын
Yeah I think Ubisoft got scared how well a game without an "immediately likeable" character after Connor received so much negative backlash for being so different from Ezio - even Bayek, I remember rolling my eyes during a Gamespot interview where they complained about Bayek and the other host started talking about how great Ezio was. Don't get me wrong, Ezio's easily top 3 Assassin's for me, I just feel sometimes his popularity's why Ubisoft can't have a character like Evie in Syndicate be the main for most of the game, because Ezio's the one every other main character gets compared to and if they're not instantly likeable, there's always going to be a vocal part of the fanbase that bashes them instantly which makes Ubisoft afraid to take a risk on someone not like him.

Hello MA, I completely agree with the video, there are so many plot ideas such as safeguarding a place or character, facing moral corruption not only with the master assassins but also other members and allies, or even exploring new lands in a competition with the templars. In the end I believe the theme of all Assassin's Creed, should remain to be a fight for freedom. A very big concept that can cover so many different paths in a story. Another thing, I have watched your content over the years, and I feel so relieved with how your content has remained true to what the AC community needs and stands for. It feels almost as satisfying as it would be to find how a Master Assassin in game, managed to overcome their thirst for power in the same way Altair did in the first AC. In my opinion a lot of terrible things are going on with AC and Ubisoft recently, as I'm sure you are aware, but I believe what people need right now is to be reminded of the previous success with Mirage, and the team that worked on it sould be supported, rather than beat down all future attempts of selling an AC in the future for what happened with Shadows. Do you agree with that? Anyways I can't wait to see what your next video would be about, I love those where you rank the clips that your community send you lol

Traditionally, and historically, assassinations of high profile officials has been politically motivated. The point of Altaïr's intellectual journey was about the intersection between philosophy, politics, and religion. The whole reason the Assassins and Templars are fighting is because they have differing ideas on how to improve the world, not because they *want* to kill people. They've always both seen it as a necessary evil to achieve their end goals

This is why Edward is my favourite! He really breaks the mold with his motivation of greed, he was warned througgout that if he kept living his life he woupd eventually be the only one...and indeed he lost almost everyone throughout his journey. It eventually gets to a point that really triggers his character change as he finally alligns with the Assassins properly and becomes less selfish and greedy. Easilly the best story in the franchise

I've had this feeling about the revenge stories in Assassin's Creed as well. The franchise has become too reliant on this plot device, to the point where it's become pretty tiring and repetitive. Then again, this is Ubisoft we're talking about. They're not exactly known for being original and creative with their narratives. :P
Ай бұрын
Everything is a revenge, because everything has a cause and an effect. Even if a future story was about simply searching through the world for finding all the ancient relics before the templars do, it's still a "revenge", since the assassins know what the templars did, that's why they're trying to find the relics before them. Unless a game was something so simple like "Assassin's Creed - Going to the bakery" and that was all we would do, you won't really find a story without any revenge. Sure, some are more direct than others, but it's still based on the same thing: getting something bad, and reciprocating it so it won't happen again or just trying to make things better for us.

Great video man! Yeah, revenge is a great way to set up a clear goal for the character and make you empathize with them quickly. It definitely works but I’m also onboard for different takes too. Like AC4 did a really nice job doing it a bit differently! It doesn’t really push revenge for a large amount of that game. It was just a story of Edward and his personal growth. You grew to mostly like him based off his personality, even if you weren’t fully empathizing with him yet. Then when the revenge part of the story comes in at the end, he goes through that last bit of character development (and goes full Assassin) and you fully empathize with him, which sorta explains why a lot of people really loved his character overall.

So I just want to add my 2 cents into the mix. I think revenge in AC is not just the individual plot motivator, but it's a cycle that's keeping both the templars and assassins stuck in their eternal war. An assassin will hurt a templar-to-be so much that they'll spend their lives hunting (unrelated) assassins, who will then spend their lives hurting templars. So on, so forth. The cycle of vengeance is what keeps them locked in the stalemate. You can see that in action with Bellec and the attempted truce in Unity. I think revenge is a part of all AC stories because you need to suffer greatly to push yourself to do the deeds they do. I don't think they could stray away from that concept too much, because then what would they even be fighting for? Sure, control and freedom are opposing morals, but there's gotta be at least one person that pushes into 'murder' for the others to follow in retaliation.

AC definitely has taken the themes of revenge very far, though it doesnt nearly stop at just a personal level. The Assassins and the Templars as a whole simply cannot live and let live, partly because theur idealogies aren't reconcilable and partly because their histories are irreconcilable. Theur rivalry has become so deeply entrenched that its perfectly acceptable for them to exploit, hunt, and otherwize harass each other for little benefit. Even to the point of murdering individuals who have long since become irrelevant like they did with Ezio in his elderly years. And acts like that do go on to spur personal vendettas. It's a bitter, bitter cycle of violence that seemingly cannot end.

I think Yasuke will have the most interesting Narrative over Naoe as it is just a revenge story that is subverted a bit by the fact Yasuke is forgiven by Naoe but she does harbour resentment for the others. Yasuke's motivation for helping the Templars and Nobonaga is unclear (It's not revenge) but he does have a redemption arc later which will have its own motivation. Yasuke seems more layered than Naoe in that regard which makes me think Naoe will be Narratively bland but her gameplay is meant to make up for that. It's just speculation but does feel that way. I want to know what you think Yasuke's story will be, will he be a Templar at the start and be shay but reversed or do you think he is just a simple slave that is looking for a home. Great Video, Master Assassin looking forward to more as I am so excited for AC Shadows.

I remember Master Assassin mentioned in a previous video - if the Shadows team sticks to the lore - that Nobunaga presented himself as a friend to the Assassins at first and promised an alliance after he unified Japan, but he betrayed them after he uncovered a Piece of Eden. Maybe Nobunaga lies to Yasuke about their reasons for going to war at first but Yasuke turns against his former master after discovering the truth for himself? MA also suggested Yasuke might have come with the Templars since one of the Portugese ships in the harbor has a Templar Cross, so maybe Nobunaga liberated Yasuke from the Templars so Yasuke remained loyal to him, but then Nobunaga chooses to defect later and Yasuke finds out later? Lots of possibilities lol, curious to hear what MA thinks!

@@seanw8005 Yeah me too. Although he probably won't since he barely mentions Yasuke lately as the character has contraversy surrounding him... I would think he wouldn't care but he seems he doesn't want to be anywhere near all that considering he is still just a small channel. What I think is Quebec will keep it lore consistent, I don't think Yasuke was tricked... I think he knew he was working for templars... Nobunaga may have tricked the Assassins to maintain control of the piece of Eden. Naoe in the trailer asked Yasuke whether he would follow his path which may allude to him being a Templar because if he never was it wouldn't make sense to say that since it would be out of his knowledge (he would tell her he didn't know). Yasuke being a Templar Samurai sounds really cool and an association like that makes him one of the most interesting characters in the series next to Shay and Haytham... Maybe the Templar ideology intrigued him at first but he defects similar to Shay after he sees what he does to the Iga Village. Yasuke was a sold off as a slave when he was young maybe his actions bring back painful memories and questions whether the Templars and Nobunaga are the right fit for him or not... As he is a man without a home looking for purpose and sanctuary in a cruel world. It's all very fascinating to speculate about.

I wouldn’t say Valhalla was revenge but it was a part of the story. Eivor got revenge in the prologue and I guess avenged odin in a way at the end of the story

I think it is fine in most games, but in my opinion ac 3 and unity did it awfully, to a point I spend some time trying to figure out whether I could get connor to die instead of haytham.

AC 2 and Brotherhood involved revenge. I guess Freedom Cry and Odyssey may have involved that as well. What else had it? 1:20 Oh my god, he killed a woman. 3:43 Your hatred has made you powerful.

I love stories that try to teach the audience that revenge is inherently wrong and hurts all parties involved. Unfortunately, they’re never received well. I’m specifically talking about TLoU2 and how it instantly reminded me of Assassin’s Creed 2. Ezio was driven by vengeance and then decided “killing you wont bring my father back” (albeit foolishly). I have the strong belief that any kill performed in the pursuit of vengeance CANNOT be justified. An Assassin, or any other killer, should kill as a means of preventing future suffering, never to attempt to write the wrongs of the past.

Mirage has been heavily criticized on its lack luster, boring story. (Even tho I like it). But let’s be honest, Basim having a revenge motivation for joining the Assassins would have made his story much better.

Rogue, Unity and Syndicate doesn't mention any respect either. They are just as shallow and mindless as Odyssey. The difference is Odyssey doesn't hide the fact that it is.
