Connor learned and understood something few Assassin's in the series ever did. The world is fucking complicated. It isn't as simple as Templar vs. Assassin. United States vs the British. Natives vs. White Man. Good vs. Evil. And while he believes the Assassin's are still the correct path to follow (Though he even seems to admit it may be in simple rebellion to a father he despises) He's not as naive as many Assassin's and Templar's seem to be.

Haytham understood, but didn't care. He helped wipe out all the assassins in the colonies, and his entire life he worked to crush them and keep them down forever. When presented with the option of peace, he chose to betray Connor rather than work to forge an alliance, then tried to kill him. It's like Connor said, Haytham can talk about peace all he wants, but it means nothing unless he actually takes action.

Templar vision - Madara's Moon Eye plan
@thomasjoychild49627 жыл бұрын
Wall of text: TLDR: Haytham is IMO a terrible person and I think the A-T difference is largely down to the assassins having more faith/trust in humanity. I've gotten the increasing impression as I've seen him in the games that Haytham is actually, fundamentally, a violent thug who's learned to put on a mask of civility but whose main real pleasure in life is hurting others. He's very quick to resort to violent solutions to any problem and, even when violence is called, for he's excessive in its application and level of cruelty. The examples that immediately come to mind are him using Ziio as an excuse to beat the shit out of some soldiers at tavern with audible glee, (well, her and some insults that even Ezio would have laughed off), his going utterly berserk on Benjamin Church when he catches up to him, and his decision to kneecap Achilles' in both knees in almost begrudging manner at having been talked out of killing him. Yeah, the common ground between the two factions stops after their shared belief in the phrase "nothing is true, everything is permitted" because they take different things from it. The templars take "...so without control, people will destroy themselves, being too stupid to know or act in their own best interests." or even "...so do whatever you like and screw over others as much as possible, because nothing inherent says it's wrong to do so." Whereas I think the assassin takeaway is "...so we are each the arbiters of what's important and of our behaviour, this world is what we make of it rather than having an intrinsic design that can't be changed." which leads them to the pursuit of trying to protect people's ability to examine the world and make those choices for themselves, even if a lot of people make bad choices. I guess I think it can kinda be simplified down to assassins having more faith in humanity than templars and/or accepting that mistakes and bad choices can be part of a process of learning and improvement. *Shrug*

I think Ezio was accidentally the problem. Because as you said Connor is a soft spoken stoic, and this is okay, my favorite franchise, Transformers, is lead by one, Peter Cullen's Optimus Prime. The problem is that we got Connor straight off the back of 3 games of the fiery, passionate, definitely not stoic Ezio. Going straight from one to the other is a jarring change. It's like similarly stoic Aiden Peirce of Watch Dogs was called characterless, yet he's still the most popular WD protagonist according to a poll on the wiki.

Connor faced many hardships before he became an Assassin. Because of facing conflicts in such a young age, it kind of forced him to become mature very quickly and contemplative. No you are not, for me, anyone who says the game was bad either did not play it or simply did not pay attention to it and left it halfway through, AC3 was and IS one of the best games in the saga (in my list it holds tightly the 2nd place, right after AC2 (though hey are nearly on the same level)), Connor’s character was one of the best ones we got, he fought with everything he had for what he believed in, for the ones he loved and despite the fact that the more he went on, the more he lost, he did not give up, he placed the higher good above himself, THAT is truly inspiring, to see someone so upright and just being forced to endure so much suffering and then seeing him get right back up and hit twice as hard was magnificient. Despite what many say, Connor (along with Ezio) is the best assassin I ever saw, if only he were real.

I made a promise to protect our people, I thought, I thought if I could stop the Templars, keep the Revolution free of their influence, then those that I supported would do what was right, they did I suppose do what was right - what was right for them. As for you father, I thought I might unite us, that we would forget the past, and forge a better future. In time I believed you could be made to see the world as I did, to understand, but it was just a dream, this too I should have known. Are we not meant to live in peace then? is that it? Are we born to argue? To fight? So many voices, each demanding something else. It has been hard at times, but never harder than today, to see all I have worked for Perverted, Discarded, Forgotten. You would say I have described the whole of History father, are you smiling then? Hoping I might speak the words you longed to hear? To validate you? To say that all along you were right? I will not. Even as I am now faced with the truth of your cold words, I refuse, because I believe things can still change. I may never succeed, the Assassins may struggle another thousand years in vain, but we will not stop. Compromise. That is what everyone has insisted upon, and so I have learned it, but differently than most I think. I realize now that it will take time, that the road ahead is long and shrouded in darkness, it is a road that will not always take me where I wish to go, and I doubt I will live to see its end, but I will travel down it nonetheless. For at my side walks hope, in the face of all that insist I turn back, I carry on, this.... this is my compromise” - Connor Kenway

Gotta hand it to Connor, he has something that rivals Ezio, it's the sheer honor, commitment and hope that Connor had in his goals for achieving absolute freedom from the Templars. He lost everything, his tribe forced out of their village, no parents, no family, nothing. But the point is, despite everything, he still never let it get to him, he still continued on with his path for the freedom of others, not just himself. Ezio is great and all, but it is insane how even after Connor went through so much than Ezio ever imagined, he still fought for freedom to the very end

"They did, I suppose, do what was right; what was right for them." is one of my favourite parts of this speech. It shows a level of understanding that I feel is lacking even today. People generally aren't malicious, they just do what's right for those they care about, according to their values. Sometimes that hurts others, and that's unfortunate, but it's hardly ever done out of malice, however tempting it may be to think otherwise. I really like that sentiment. It resonates with Connor's belief in the fact that humanity can one day be better, that he expresses understanding that people usually try to help rather than harm, because we try to be good people. I don't know how much of that made sense. I just found it struck a chord with me.
@tairenk.399619 күн бұрын
Nuances like these highlight why calling him “naive” oversimplifies his character. Connor begins as an idealist, driven by a fierce determination to fix the world’s injustices. However, his experiences gradually deconstruct this idealism. Through every alliance and betrayal, he learns that discerning right from wrong in a world entrenched in moral ambiguity is far from straightforward. Yet, even as his youthful optimism is tempered by harsh realities, Connor never abandons his core convictions. He adapts, accepting the limits of his influence while striving to create a better future with what’s within his power. In some ways, he even surpasses Ezio in the way he figures out the deep truths about life, human nature, and his role in the ongoing conflict in a surprisingly short amount of time.

Connor will always be the best Assassin in history. It used to be Ezio, but I doubt even he could handle the harshness and unfairness Connor went through. The main reason he became an Assassin was to help his people against the Templars. His tribe was the most important thing to him. So he helped the Colonist fight for their freedom, thinking they would protect his people and let them live freely in return. He succeeded in destroying the Templar's influence in America, but he failed to keep his people safe. His people supported the British and after, they were driven off of their land by the Colonist, the people Connor fought with. But he didn't give up. He didn't switch sides. He was too noble to just let the Templars take control and take away everyone's freedom. Even if it might have cost him his tribe. He knew there was much more at stake than just his people. His fight against the Templars was not fair to him at all. He kept fighting, weakening the Templars, strengthening the Assassin's and in return he just kept losing things. He knew if he didn't stop the Templars and fight for humanity's freedom, no one else would. It takes the strongest man in the world to fight for something he gains nothing and loses everything from for the greater good of everyone else.
@kungfumaster517 жыл бұрын
Eddy Charles That's what makes Connor one of the best assassins in the entire franchise. People have professed that they regarded him as too serious and boring, but that's what makes him such a compelling character. Also, you can't really blame him for his stoic disposition, the guy experienced a pretty tragic childhood; he watched his mother die before his eyes and witnessed his home razed to the ground. Perhaps the reason why fans were bashing on Connor was due to the fact that prior, we had three games all centering around Ezio, who was more light hearted and the general ambiance for those games was not as grim. The abrupt transition may have been a bit much for people initially.

Stop Washington's men from attacking village...only to stab best friend in face killing him. Work with Dad to make world better place...only to also stab in face. Rebuild Homestead...only to have old man die. Seriously. Like every little thing you do in this game ends up sad as hell.

First off I want to say that I love Ezio and he will always be a special character in my heart. However...I personally think Connor is a bit better. People say he's bland, but on the contrary. He's not. He's just not as jokey or sarcastic as other Assassins. He takes his missions and what he fights for very seriously. But that doesn't always mean he's a stick in the mud. Look back at the Homestead missions. It shows the more softer side of his personality and how he cared for everyone in the Homestead community. I think what makes Connor so unique is he does have his faults. Ezio has made mistakes, but they are very few and things always seem to fall in place for him. However, Connor has made many mistakes, but learns from them. He fights for what he believes in. He can be naive, but that's how it should be. Everybody learns and grows from their mistakes and Connor is no different. I just wish he had a happier ending in canon instead of what actually happened to him.

Just so y’all know, the reason why Connor is so “emotionless” and I’ve seen you write, is because he’s been through tremendous hardships already at such a young age (mind you he was only 13 when the Boston Massacre happened leading up to him killing Pitcairn at 19 years old and furthermore) he is probably one of the youngest and most brutal assassin’s to come. Plus he is a Mohawk Indian and in their tribe as I know it, they are not allowed to display such emotion because it is only seen as weakness so he tends to remain cold and bold. But otherwise he’s an amazing character nonetheless and shows the realistic display of what a true assassin should be.

"You wield your blade like a man, but your mouth like a child," was one of the best descriptions of Connor- and I LOVED him as a protagonist. He did as Achilles told him most of the time, hit the targets his mentor instructed, and most of the time he barely knew why he was killing them. He rarely knew why they were taking their actions, only that he didn't want them influencing his peoples' land because of his run in with Lee as a child and the burning of his village. This is why it hit so much harder to be betrayed by Washington. But Connor never seemed to make his own choices about what to do as an Assassin other than finish what he was instructed to do. He didn't take the path towards understanding the Creed and the reasoning for the Assassins the way Ezio had, or Altaiir once we saw his grown mind in Revelations. He was ever the brute doing the job, not the Mentor understanding the whys of the war. Then again, Achilles wasn't the best Mentor, and he just wanted revenge for his Brotherhood more than an informed and free thinking new batch of students beneath him. Some of Connor's shortcomings are just the extension of the failures of his teacher.

"So many voices. Each demanding something else" "It has been hard at times but never harder than today. To see all I have worked for perverted, discarded, forgotten" I feel like this is a reflection of the AC fan base back then and even to this day. The fans demanding the James Bond esque character that was Ezio and having Connor try to fill those shoes but not getting what they wanted. To see all he achieved to be written off by fans because he wasn't as charismatic or badass as Ezio, his father Haythem or Edward is sad. Granted, he isn't the best character is the series but he is definitely underrated in his achievements. It's sad we will never get sequels to round out his character progression after the events of AC3.

Connor is the only assassin that actually has a realistic personality, he’s not happy go lucky, he slaughters and murders countless people and doesn’t go on remaining happy innocent and naive like other assassins, he actually genuinely has an understanding of the world at the time, and of the assassins in general. He’s also lived a different kind of life than any other assassin, the hope he seeks to fight for is quite possibly the best quality an assassin can have. His story is also so incredibly intertwined and connected to connors story waaaaaay more than any other game, even the endings to Desmond and Connor are extremely similar, bittersweet but mostly bitter endings. This is why Connor is in my opinion the greatest assassin, and AC3 is the greatest assassins creed game. The people wanted something different from these games and they got it, and they pretend like it’s not.

I just finished AC3 for the first time today and am at post game content. I actually really like Connor. I was on the the fence because of the voice acting at first, but felt like it got better as the game progressed. He is undoubtingly probably the strongest assassin when it comes to combat and sheer brutality, but has this naivety to him throughout the game which stems from him not being as exposed to the outside world and being born in a warrior heavy society. He was forced to grow up pretty young with the death of his mother, village being attacked, and Lee's shitty behavior. While hes focused on revenge, we get many moments like in the Homestead missions showing hes compassionate and genuinely care about people despite his stoic and sometime stand offish appearance. In the end he pretty much concludes that noone knows how the war between templars and assassins will end or rather it will amount to much, but that he personally can only do what he feels is right. The war is more complicated than simple good vs evil, a nuance i don't think the previous games really touched upon. I hated some of the mechanics in this game, never liked the optional missions, and thought it had jankyness that rivaled AC4, but other than that storywise this might be one of my favorites in the series. I actually really loved the Modern Day stuff in the one too, though i have some mixed feelings on Desmond's ending. The Homestead Missions were also pretty enjoyable and actually made me tear up a bit in the end. Its just a shame we didn't get a proper ending for Connor's story showing what happens to him later in life.

This is a great scene that shows the best character development in any AC protagonist next to Edward. Both Grandfather and Grandson changed so drastically in their world views, Connor who was too dedicated to the assassins to the point of foolish naivety, while Edward was too self obsessed to ever consider pursuing a higher calling. At the end of their games they each find their own form of truth; Connor realizes that the world is not as black and white as we would like it to be, that even though the Assassins' goals may be the best course, that does no mean that the assassins are any less evil or misguided than the Templars. Edward on the other hand finds that the road he has traveled, one of selfishness, has left him alone and beaten, that in his never ending quest for self gain, he lost all who he would call friend or family. Here, Edward decides that it is better to be part of a cause which will save the world than to continue down his dark path, just in time to get a second chance at family.
