Kinda funny when these people and the claimed "Japanese" people get upset about Yasuke depiction as a samurai when there are books such as "Kuro-suke", authored by a native Japanese Kurusu Yoshio that was published in 1968 or "Yasuke: The True Story of the Legendary African Samurai" published in 2019, authored by Thomas Lockley, an Associate Professor at Nihon University College of Law in Tokyo, where he teaches courses about the international and multicultural history of Japan and East Asia along with Geoffrey Girard, also an author and teaches about nonfiction, thrillers, historicals, and speculative fiction. Animes such as "Yasuke", a Japanese-American original net animation (ONA) series and animated by Japanese own animation studio MAPPA aired in 2021. Or games such as "Nioh 2" or "Samurai Warriors 5" developed by Japanese own Koei Tecma and released in 2020 and 2021 respectably; In which ALL of them depicted Yasuke as a Samurai either as an MC, secondary character or NPC and was released BEFORE AC Shadows but NOBODY get upset about those materials at all... 😅😅

@marcogenovesi8570 And yet, the girl shouldn't be a ninja (shinobi). She should be a kunoichi. Heck, if any soldier saw a woman with a sword on her back, they'd stop her immediately. That's how poorly they researched this game. Heck, the architecture is Chinese instead of Japanese. So, not only are Ubisoft making her feminine, but also masculine by changing her into a shinobi. The one time where it is expressly said that he did fight, they got their asses beat, and Oda was forced to kill himself. Their opponent did not take Yasuke to be a serious adversary, and spared his life. He was handed back over to the Jesuits, ending his EXTREMELY SHORT adventure in Japan. Considering this concerns the 1st recorded black man in Japan's history, that caught the eye of NOBUNAGA, in a well documented period of Japan's history and most importantly of all that if there was a single credible historical source describing Yasuke as a samurai it would be absolutely everywhere then the only conclusion is that this is actual rewriting of history, actual racial political propaganda. We wuz kangz, pharoz, vhikingz and sumuraiz and shitz.

Honestly, I'd have advised them to have fun with the historical reality that the majority of 'ninjas' were just Samurai and/or retainers doing something dishonorable while hiding their identity. Something like having 'ninjas' showing up as a recurring enemy type, with a few actual proper spies showing up on occasion and the Assassins taking huge advantage of this situation to get their work done without it being traceable to them. So at random in a group of 'ninjas' you'll run into someone with actual Assassin training that's effectively a mini-boss fight to deal with... or potentially can turn on their 'allies' to help you clean house the moment they recognize you as one of their own. Or they could play up the mythic image and occasionally have random peasants along the road side with farming implements turn out to be Ninjas and jump you. No different model or anything to set them out until they attack you. Same with servants or any other background NPC type. Go for the whole Kabuki theater 'Ninja dressed as stage hand' thing. (heck, have that be a thing in a scene of the game just for fun!)

You squint up, unable to find the protagonist standing in front of you, thanks to his natural shadowmeld. Then he smiles; A Cheshire cat grin in gilded horns floating 6 feet above the ground. "Oma-ii wa! Mou shin-day hu!" His non-rhotic singsong battlecry rumbles through your 5ft frame. The spirits of your ancient Japanese warrior ancestors evacuate your corporeal vessel as Nobunaga-sama's vassal steps forth in his chinkless samurai suit; His comically oversized katana ready to slice through your midsection and disembowel you of your last meal. Before your world fades to black you stare into his eyes, your mouth flopping open like an already dead fish. It's the last pair of eyes you will ever see, in addition to the first.

The funny part is that if they made Yasuke a major NPC character that you interact with throughout the story, like you can with historical figures in ACs of the past, while playing a Japanese main character, very few, if any, people would be mad. He did exist at this period in time, and he could play a key part in the story, like Leonardo Da Vinci, Machiavelli, Benjamin Franklin, Edward Teach, Herodotus, and et cetera all did. He never had to be a playable character to be a cool inclusion. But no. The African man by proxy of Portugal, who arrived in Japan the same year the game takes place, must be billed as a playable """Legendary Samurai""" out to """Liberate Japan""" despite having functionally no training, no knowledge of the culture, and only existing as a footnote in Oda Nobunaga's legacy. How... 'progressive'. EVEN IF he was officially recognized as a "Samurai" by Nobunaga, the man had none of the training, experience, or knowledge to stand alongside the likes of Hattori Hanzo, Tokugawa Ieyasu, Takeda Shingen, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, or any other notable Madness. Of course these are the same people thinking you should pay over $100 for the game, so maybe Madness is their stock and trade at this point. Very disappointing as an in-at-day-one Assassin's Creed fan. I'll be picking up Ghost of Tsushima instead.

10:40 the white Zulu thing can actually work, there has historically been 2 white Zulus, (white men recognised as white Zulu by the Zulu themselves) 1 was a missionary who became a Zulu leader following the British toppling of the Zulu kingdom during the Anglo Zulu war, the British devided the kingdom amongst Zulu princes/chiefs and one of them was the white British missionary who would then fight the others for more control in the region, even got British help as some of the other chiefs got Boer kommandos (Boer milita) to fight for them. The other more famous one in the modern day would by musician Jesse Clegg who was a famous white anti apartheid musician who would post apartheid continue to make English and Zulu songs to try and close the racial gap apartheid had created, the Zulu king at the time (named Goodwill) dubbed him the white Zulu and he was amoung Nelson Mandela's favourite artists. Although knowing modern day video game creators they'll make it woke, lame, female and gay somehow.

A lot of the minutia that people will be in dispute over has very quickly gotten droll. A major thing is that they're talking about things like the formalization of samurai that occurred under the Tokugawa or the nuance between bushi and samurai but that's all really showing how it's missing the forest for the trees. The implication of saying, "He was a samurai" is obvious. It's implying a level of prestige, of accomplishment, of responsibility - that Yasuke simply did not have. It's the same as how when someone says, "Yasuke was a retainer" they're saying, "Uh, a retainer technically should be counted as a samurai" - if that's the case, why take Umbridge with someone pointing out that he was a retainer? It's obviously because the implication - the more accurate implication - of saying 'retainer' - is not something they want.

About the whole homosexuality thing, in pre-modern Japan a form of pederasty was practiced both among monks and samurai, and we do know that a few samurai practiced it. However the practice seems to have become really popular during the Edo period, with an entire genre of literature being created around it. In it, it's common to attribute such a "romance" to Oda Nobunaga and Mori Ranmaru (who both lived during the Sengoku period). However, no period source confirms it, it's Edo period erotic fanfiction.
@internetzenmaster89523 ай бұрын
Given Oda was on the losing side of the Sengoku Jidai, I wonder if the literature claiming Oda and Mori were 'romantically involved' wasn't "romance" so much as one extra way to tarnish Oda's legacy.
@Knoloaify3 ай бұрын
@@internetzenmaster8952 Oda was on the winning side of the Sengoku Jidai, he's still known to this day as one of the 3 great unifiers of the country. Nobunaga is the guy who unified half of Japan, he was only stopped by one of his vassals betraying him by attacking him when he was at Honnoji (with Yasuke). Also Nobunaga doesn't need that to tarnish his legacy, the guy straight up won the title of "Demon King of the Sixth Heaven" during his lifetime, and he eagerly accepted the title. No, Edo samurai were just extremely horny for boys, as I've said their erotic literature touched on more historical figures than Nobunaga. The point wasn't to besmirch him, but to fantasize about his "supposed" relationship with Ranmaru. It's erotic fiction, not propaganda.
@internetzenmaster89523 ай бұрын
@@KnoloaifyI guess I should clarify what I meant by "losing side": Oda wasn't around to enjoy the fruits of a unified Japan because he got stabbed in the back by a vassal near the very end (Mitsuhide pulling a fucking Starscream for no apparent reason like an asshole iirc), unlike Hideyoshi and Ieyasu, who finished what Oda started. As for 'doesn't need that to tarnish his legacy'... during the Edo period the Confucian scholars helping shape Japan's fundamental value system back then had a negative view of Nobunaga (they hated his 'subdue through force/trickery' method for keeping people in line), so it is not beyond the realm of possibility there was an attempt by the Confucians to 'spit on Oda's grave'... only to completely backfire given Edo samurai were a bunch of horny men. On the other hand, given this is the same Edo period that produced 'The Dream of the Fisherman's Wife' a little over 200-ish years later... yeah, I could see it simply being case of writers being too horny for their own good. The fact the ubisoft's 'historical expert' entire background is about the 'idealization of boys and male/male love in feudal Japan' proves that there's enough historical literature to justify a historical degree if nothing else.
