Regarding that female summo monk.. Historically, women were not allowed to participate in sumo and were even forbidden from stepping into the dohyō (sumo ring) due to ancient Shinto beliefs that considered women "impure" because of menstruation. This tradition has been strictly upheld by the Japan Sumo Association (JSA) for centuries. Even today, women are still barred from entering the ring, which has led to several controversies. For example, in 2018, female medical professionals were asked to leave the ring after rushing to help a collapsed mayor, which sparked public outrage.

They don't mess around with religious traditions. Even those were pretty infrequent since many rulers/officials specifically banned them.

I'm convinced the original idea for this story was William Adams, the first European Samurai, an Englishman who became a proper Samurai and gained fame with the Shogun, he was given a wife and lands and is still honoured by the Japanese and his descendants today.
