We have camped on Assateague dozens of times. It is important to know that there are actually two parks on the northern part of the island: the MD State park is directly off the bridge, while the National Seashore is down a road that is several miles long. The state park has nicer amenities like hot water and flush toilets), while the National Seashore has cold water showers and outhouses. The National Seashore charges an entrance fee good for seven days, PLUS camping. It is an expensive place if you just want to camp for a single night. The horses are thugs. They will steal your phone, and destroy your property! DON’T bring your cooler onto the beach! Or keep food out on a table. They will crash your meal and eat all your food! And remember: you can’t do anything to stop them. If you try you will be charged and forced to pay a huge fine! But if you are prepared, it is a great place to stay. Enjoy the sea, then go eat and enjoy the boardwalk in nearby Ocean City. Bring your kayak and your camera, and take pictures of the wildlife. Laugh at all the newbies who brought their coolers out on the beach. It is a great place to visit. Just remember that it is a wilderness area, and plan accordingly! If you want to camp in a shadier, more civilized area, the Pocomoke River MD state park is about 25 minutes down Rt 113. Hot showers, flush toilets, electrical power, shade! A beautiful wild and scenic river for kayaking and canoeing, even a swimming pool for cooling off. At $25 a night for out-of-staters, it is a bargain. And unlike Assateague (where camp grounds are almost always filled to capacity) you can almost always get a camp site there.

What you said is a 100% correct about the National Park I have never stayed at the state park by the hear it is much nicer with a lot of amenities. He states that there is electric and water available on the Bayside and that is not true except at the camp host sites. What you said about the horses being thugs. 🤣😂😁 MOST DEFINITELY!! They will steal food right off the grill, break into coolers open bags and they even tried to get in our tent. Yelling and waving your arms and making a lot of noise banging pots really does nothing to deter them. There is water available but it's not right at a site and also Be aware that B loop on the Bayside is no generators so it's great for tent camping but can be hot in a trailer in the summer

The National Seashore has no hookups. As far as I know the state park doesn’t have water hook ups, as the island moves around a lot (I’m not kidding. It is a sand bar). Re-laying pipes would be a pain. Wire for electrical hook ups are easier to deal with. Water is available at spigots around the camp ground. But perhaps things have changed. I haven’t stayed at the State Park portion for several years.

@@dallycientaASMR not a year, but getting a site from May through September can be challenging! If you are planning for a specific time frame, a year ahead would be prudent. You might want to check out the Pocomoke River State Park. It is only 25 minutes away, and is actually a more relaxing place to stay. Play at Assateague all day, then relax and sleep on the Pocomoke.

I used to live nearby. The winters in Worcester County are very mild. The county doesn’t even own any snow removal equipment! In many ways, the winters are easier on the horses than the summers. Except that they can’t steal KFC from the campers as often!

It is south of Ocean City MD. There are plenty of signs on both Route 50 and RT 113. If you want to stay there you will probably want to make reservations several months in advance. Most of the summer months are already filled up. TBH, October is in many ways the best time to visit.

Since there is a designated area to drive on the sand, could I theoretically park my SUV on the beach? I've done it in other countries (I usually just park and sleep on an air mattress in the back), but not sure what the state and federal rules are in a place like VA or MD. Great video, great info!!

Hi, thanks for watching this video and taking the time to leave a comment. I am not so sure about the rules regarding driving vehicles on the beach. I know that places allow you to do so but I’m not sure if this is one of them. I wish I could be more informative.
@clydeosterhout1221

If you camp on the ocean side camp sites you are basically parked on the beach. Taking your vehicle actually out on the beach requires a very pricey permit, plus the $$$ entrance fee.

@letsgoseeit457
@letsgoseeit457 Жыл бұрын
The odd thing is that they allow bikers and pedestrians to enter the park for free. However, there is no easily accessible parking spaces for cars close to the entrance. What I did was park illegally a short distance from the front entrance and then biked it in. I was lucky I did not get a ticket.
@clydeosterhout1221

Most bikers park their cars at the visitor’s center on the mainland. There is a bridge just for bikers and pedestrians that crosses the sound. Biking into the National Seashore has the advantage of being free, as far as I can tell. In 50 years of visiting the park I have never seen a biker pay at the entrance booth!
