I don't know how you can assemble a 17x17, my 9x9 cube, every time I try to get the second edge in the first comes out and it's ether the centers holding the edge in are ether to loose that it slides out or to tight that the centers squeeze the edge out. I still have it all in a bag in pieces.

If the parts are dry and not covered in lube (lube stops tape from sticking) use masking tape to hold them in place. Then gradually remove it and reposition elsewhere as you proceed. Also you can tighten the screws, assemble it and untighten them later. If the parts are covered in lube and tightening screws doesn't work, wash the parts in very soapy water to remove the lube, rinse and dry. Then try the masking tape again and lube when assembled.

And I though assembling a 5 or 6 was complex. I wonder what a large even layer cube is like given that they usually have those inner middle pieces

He says "There are over 1500 parts" in a tone of wonderment. Um, there are 4913 faces, so yeah, there'd better be "over 1500 parts." Or does he perhaps mean "over 1500 kinds of parts"? Kudos to the tool and die makers at Yuxin!

@TonyFisherPuzzles

That's incorrect. Assembly costs almost nothing. An hour or two at Chinese factory rates would be less than $20, probably less than $10.

@@TonyFisherPuzzles Oh wow Why does it cost so much then is it the plastic cost
@TonyFisherPuzzles
@TonyFisherPuzzles 3 жыл бұрын
The early stages cost quite a bit. Designing it and doing the CAD work. Getting prototypes made and tested. Sometimes there can be multiple tries. Then there's the many differently shaped pieces and each will require a machined metal mould for the injection moulding. That costs a fortune. Although manpower is cheap if you add all the tasks together like operating the moulding equipment, bringing in the plastic, cleaning the moulds from time to time, retrieving the parts, sorting them. boxing them, moving them, it all adds up. Then there's taxes and the shipping costs and as you say plastic.

1,538 pieces plus a core. Say you already attached the first 5 center pieces to the core in the beginning, probably take you like 2 minutes. Then say you already have every piece organized so you can find them and assemble them quickly, like maybe take you only 5 seconds to find one and put it in. Now that means it would take you more than 2 hours just to put everything together, and that's not including the time it will take to put the last slice on. Plus how long would it have taken you to organize each and every piece into it's category? Maybe a whole other 2 hours.

So what's the theory on how they put that last face on? A string through that screw hole and around where the band was with some sort of clever slip knot? Some stretchy plastic wrap that would tear out a narrow crevice clean? And people are just thinking about the pieces and the assembly at the factory. The molds must look insane themselves.
