I always saw Lydia as being exactly like her mother. I imagined Mrs Bennett being like Lydia when she was young. Mrs Bennett describes herself as someone chasing soldiers before she married.

For Wickham '95, the one other thing about that portrayal that tips it for me, is I don't truly believe '05 KNOWS what he's doing and how deep he's in. '95 knows and all of his choices take him deeper and further from redemption. However, '05 and that pairing make it way more explicit how unhappy of a life Lydia has, but because Lydia isn't just thoughtless but also kinda detestable in it, it doesn't land as hard as it should've. I want those '95's, but I need the energy of the '05 relationship where it's obvious that the power dynamic really is Wickham is a predator, and whether it is currently the case or just will be, Lydia has been consigned to an abusive and abysmal life because the people who should have protected get and raised her, failed. And also although different than Mary, her sisters were also kinda complicit, either in enabling (Kitty), ignoring (Mary), indulging (Jane because Jane truly believes Lydia is a better smarter version of herself) or pushing her to extremes (Elizabeth is honestly a bit snide to her and my take from the book is that Lydia had no love from any older person in her life and so settles for any attention instead).

Aww a shame people feel that way about 1995 Jane because I absolutely fell in love with her from the moment she came on screen (both in a character way and in a me being a flaming lesbian way), I agree that she may come off a little soft but I didn't find that to make her seem dim witted and I thought it worked very nicely with a lively Elizabeth and loved their interactions, to be honest I also thought she had the best chemistry with her Mr Bingley with them both being kind of awkward and shy around one another, not just Bingley. I also found her to be very pretty, especially if you go by regency era standards and I REALLY got that sweetness from her. Jane was my favourite in the book and this was actually the only adaptation where I felt the same way about her but I'm definitely biased because I love that series to bits so no hate to you I just felt a need to stick up for her since not many people seem to share my view

This is the best video on the Internet. I howled with laughter multiple times and there was a lot of vocal agreement. I have never seen the 1980 one though. I have seen the 1940 one with Greer Garson and while I would not cast any of the people from that film I would add in the scenes where Darcy does not act on his feelings for Lizzy because of her family being too much for him and gradually being too far gone on her to let that stop him.

It's... not awesome! lol It obviously has some good interpretations and casting but is almost completely ruined by David Rintoul as Mr. Darcy. It's a very wooden interpretation.
@SweeneySays2 жыл бұрын
I will say that if you go into it knowing that the vibes/budget are very much community theater (every single actor is performing for the back of the house) & mentally writing over David Rintoul's entire performance (who inexplicably chose to counter his castmates by not performing at all), it's fun! That's a lot of mental energy to exert to get there, but truly the scenes without Darcy *are* fun if you're a P&P superfan.

The 1995 movie will always be my movie. I definitely feel like 2005 doesn’t give enough room to breathe. It’s a sweet soft movie, but it lacks some of the Austen nuance. 1995 feels more faithful and explores her themes more.

I haven't seen Zombies, though I read the book. Also haven't seen the 1980 version so I don't feel I can weigh in. '95 is a constant rewatch for me & though I resisted '05 a bit - it is really hard to compare to a miniseries - I ended up really loving it. The soft focus to the lighting & everything seeming a bit gentler. The biting sarcasm of '95 is super fun though. For casting though, I feel like '05 gets nearly all of my votes. '95 gets props for the Gardiners & Georgiana though.

@@catsreadbooks9359 "I don't think I can weight in ... I weighed in anyway." is such a mood tbh!! I prefer the 1995 versions of Mr. Bingley and especially Mr. Collins. It's been a few years since I saw the 2005 film version, but I remember thinking it leaned too heavily on social awkwardness in its characterization as a kinda cheap shortcut to audience sympathy, or as a way to more tidily explain away certain characters' flaws, and that struck me as particularly odd with characters like Mr. Collins and Bingley, neither of whom were depicted as remotely socially awkward in the books (even when Bingley was in Jane's presence), but 2005 Bingley is always stuttering and bumbling and having trouble formulating coherent sentences in front of Jane because that's an easy way to elicit 'awwws' from us female viewers, lol. I thought somewhat "softening" Mr. Collins' character with that was particularly egregious considering he is just completely, comically irredeemable in the books, and the whole appeal of his character is just watching him obliviously prattle on without a care in the world saying the most ridiculous, obsequious and even heinous things without the slightest smidge of self-awareness or shame. I live for Austen's contempt for the English clergy (here and in Emma). 😂 ITA on Rosamund Pike, she is my Jane Bennet~ And I can't imagine anyone will _ever_ embody Elizabeth better than Jennifer Ehle. Ugh, she's so perfect in that role!
@christinesmith3991 Жыл бұрын
Rosamund Pike is so beautiful it makes me want to cry and she is about the only good thing in the 2005 travesty (and I am a huge Keira Knightley fan) but the woman who Jane Austen is believed to have considered most closely resembled Jane Bennet is static.wikia.nocookie.net/janeausten/images/d/d6/Mrs._Quentin_aka_Jane_Bingley.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20120228192020 who I think looks a lot more like Susannah Harker (1995).
