I actually agree with Mr. Darcy on his reasoning to break up Mr. Bingley and Jane. While those two were very much In love, Mrs. Bennett and her sisters were so loud and vocal to everyone about being an “advantageous marriage” for them that as his friend, Mr. Darcy obviously had the reason to protect Bingley and keep him from getting his life ruined. What he did was wrong (meddling into someone else’s relationship) but he did it with good intentions at heart.

And Elizabeth tried to dissuade Charlotte from marrying Colins for what she felt were valid reasons, it’s just Darcy was successful. I’m sure Lady Lucas would have been furious at Elizabeth had she succeeded in convincing Charlotte to break with Colins just as Elizabeth was with Darcy.

The more i watch the movie (i don't really remember the book), i get the feeling that it was really Mr. Bingley's sister that actually pushed for the breakup, but Mr. Darcy (the quintessential gentleman we find out he is) took the whole rap. I really can't see Darcy like, "bro, you gotta dump her, her whole family trifling". But i can see the sister saying that, and Darcy tacitly agreeing.

For context, 15 years old would still have been considered a bit young to get married even in the 1800s. Wickham just totally took advantage of poor Georgiana, partially because she was so young and naive (just like Lydia). The actual average marriage age at the time was closer to 18 or early 20s (in other words, closer to the age of Elizabeth and Jane, who are supposed to be 20 and 22). Charlotte is, actually, supposed to be 27 and, therefore, she was getting closer to 30 which is why she was starting to get a bit antsy about not being married yet.

Not sure if anyone has explained but Mr. Collins, yes, is the Bennett's cousin, but he was also looking to marry one of the daughters because he was the heir to the estate (daughters/women could not inherit property). It would be in the family's best interest (and good manners) to marry him so that they could keep living in their home if their father died. As weird and awkward as he is, I always interpreted his actions to be done out of kindness. He didn't want to feel as if he were taking the family's home away.

Very true, I agree that was his instigating intent, but I will also counter that it was not flawless kindness. He was rather high handed, with an attitude of entitlement, and became a bit petty when Elizabeth turned him down. I understand he was a man of his era, and that his pride had been hurt, but if his pure intention had been to keep the home in the family's hands he could have considered Mary, I think she would have agreed.

20:31 The thing is, even for this time, a man Mr. Wickham’s age pursuing a 15 year old was still weird and seen as predatory especially because Georgiana was rich. Large age gap marriages happened most often in the high nobility because a lot of it is political marriage. Darcy isn’t nobility. He’s just rich. Jane Austen purposely wrote Wickham as the type to take advantage of young girls.

"Pride and Prejudice" by the late Ms. Jane Austen is an absolute classic. My wife and I were blessed to be in England for a couple of months, and we visited the Burghley House (which in the movie was Rosings, Lady Catherine de Bourgh's home). We also visited the Peak district and Stanage Edge where Elizabeth stood on a cliff in the wind. We also went to Chatsworth, (which in the movie was Pemberly, Mr. Darcy's home) and it is magnificent. I'm so glad we watched the movie before being in England as it made our visit so much more enjoyable. We also visited Kirby Hall, which was the setting for Mansfield Park in the movie of the same name. Again, so glad we had seen the movie as it made the visit much more meaningful.

They always do it pretty well, when Elizabeth reads the letter and finds herself comparing Darcy's story with Wickham's, realising how strange it was for Wickham to tell her basically his whole life story when they'd only met literally once before and were still relative strangers, how Wickham said he had nothing to hide and would never avoid Darcy's company and then didn't go to the party he knew Darcy would be at, and how he said he'd never disgrace Darcy out of respect for the late Mr Darcy's kindness to him and yet as soon Bingley and Darcy left the area somehow the whole town knew about it. The whole town was happy to speak about how good a person Mr Wickham was up until his 'elopement' with Lydia was known then all sorts of stories started popping up, including how many debts he owed - both to local businesses and gambling debts.

@@liv97497 lol how is the 2005 more grounded? It's so dramatic (crossing the line to melodramatic on occasions) and I am obviously not saying you aren't allowed to prefer it, just saying that just because it's more modernized and suited to 21st century sensibilities, doesn't mean It's more grounded or realistic. I can barely get through it personally because I experience it as a (very American feeling) themepark ride. Yelling and kissing in the rain? Elaborate dance sequences with long lingering looks across the ballroom? Not-like-other-girls-Lizzie giving lip while barging into Netherfield with her hair undone, her outfit unfastened and her dress half muddied? Literally not here to start beef haha but 2005 was NOT the more realistic version. It just used more modern ways to convey the story and was therefor more relatable to you.

YESS I’m so glad you liked it!!! Please watch the series, you have not known slow burn till you’ve suffered through six episodes of enemies to friends to enemies to lovers I’ve seen this movie SO many times but your edits absolutely cracked me up x

P&P is the gold standard of enemies to lovers, because they are really only "enemies" due to misjudgment, misunderstanding and miscommunication that is not contrived, but rather is the nature and standard for their class and time. But when that is allowed to fall away, it's apparent how well matched they actually are (nevermind that they were instantly physically attracted to each other as well). There's no real heinous or relevant barrier, they just needed to get over themselves, get to know each other, grow into better people and take the chance despite the perceived imbalance of their standing (although after all Mr Darcy is a gentleman and Elizabeth a gentleman's daughter)

This was such a great reaction, usually people who react to this movie have seen it many times, it was so refreshing you didn't know what was coming! Ahhh you should check the book, and other Jane Austen adaptations. Sense and sensibility is amazing too!

I was a late bloomer when it came to romance (picture Fred Savage in The Princess Bride: "Ew! Kissing!") but now that I'm later on in years I've come to appreciate and adore beautiful romance stories like Austen's.

I get you about the weird discomfort at the end, I often feel the same with scenes like this. For me, I think it has to do with how intimate it is? 'Intimacy' is implicitly supposed to be private & between the lovers only; in these contexts, anyway. Idk...I feel weirdly voyeuristic when film scenes get too intimate lol. I'm SUPPOSED to watch them & these characters aren't real anyway but idk....I have sense & respect for privacy, regardless ig lol.

AMC re-aired that version some years ago and I set out to watch it because I have always wanted to and that was as good a time as any. My sister complained about it but sat to watch it with me anyway. She watched with me every night it was on. Then when I bought the set on DVD it somehow mysteriously made it's way to her room and if I wanted to watch it I'd have to go get it from her.

@@Ms.July-Moon My brother used to do that with my albums back in the day. He’d talk crap about the bands while we listened to the records. Strangely, many of those albums, from bands he purportedly didn’t like, would mysteriously end up in his room, as if by magic. Of course, he’d have ‘No idea how they got there,’ or, when pushed further, he’d blame his friends for taking them. Yeah, sure, Matt. I believe you…🤣

Girl, I feel you on the discomfort of romance scenes. I even do what you did by pulling my shirts or dresses over my nose and I don’t why. I feel like giggling and hiding my face at the same time. I also laugh when uncomfortable and I can’t stand awkward scenes on TV. I fast forward over those scenes if I’m alone and just cringe if I’m not. I don’t know why I have these reactions.

I think it was well received, I honestly don't remember, but I know I liked it. I've only seen this version and the Colin Firth one from 1995 but there's a bunch more. I happen to be a big fan of historical movies. P.S.: Lol, that was not Fleur (Clemence Poesy) from Harry Potter, that is Rosamund Pike, I guess she's probably most known for being in "Gone Girl" with Ben Affleck.

Now that you watched Pride and Prejudice you have to watch: Lost in Austen a 4 episode mini series: A twist on Jane Austen's classic novel sees disillusioned modern working girl Amanda Price `swap' her life for Austen's celebrated heroine, Elizabeth Bennet. Trapped in the unfolding fiction, Amanda must try her utmost to fit in among the Bennets, Bingleys and Darcys, but her presence in the characters' lives sets unforeseen episodes in motion.
