Assembling the Passat gearbox for installation into a VW T25 camper - VW camper TDI engine swap

I show how I reassembled the Passat gearbox that is being installed upside down in the VW Camper after 15mm was removed from the bellhousing to make room for the Ultimate Engineering adapter plate

Can you put a diff lock or at least LSD into this transmission? And how many cm did you have to lower the engine and transmission to get to the same CV axles angle that was without a flipped transmission?

Why did you dissembling the gearbox? And why did you have to machine down 15mm to fit Ultimate Engineering adapter plate, doesn't the 012 gearbox fit AHU and AFN engines? So manny questions.... Im in the middle of planning my own conversion from the 2.0 Air cooled engine.

I disassembled it to get the machining done. I couldn't find anyone who could fit the entire gearbox assembly into a milling machine. The gearbox would fit the engine, but not upside down and not with the engine at 50 degrees on its side. If you put it in the right way up you'd have 5 reverse gears and one forward!

No not at all. It's accessible underneath the van and can be removed easily there. It's in behind the turbo.

Hi Ross, i know this is and old video but i am considering an auto conversion myself but I've bought a Golf AWG engine I know you are not a pro but will the fad passat box fit a golf engine.

If you put the Passat gearbox in a T3 the right way up, you'll have 5 reverse gears and one forward. It needs to be inverted. You can't do that with an auto box.

How did you reverse the ring and pinion to make this trans work?

I didn't. I installed the entire gearbox upside down!

@@Endfloat Can you reverse the ring and pinion on this and is that not an easier option?.I learnt you move the left to right of vice versa and get a new one for the other side, some say you can flip positions of these gears.How about installing a fwd engine and trans tranversely at the back making sure the shafts line up with the trans output.A mechanic told me that is what he was going to do on his van with a Golf 4 engine and trans..
