I have this one and I can honestly say it is my favorite EDF. I was a little intimidated at first due to it's size, cost and dual power systems. However, it is a gentle flier but has plenty of power for just about any maneuver you can think of. And it slows down nicely for landing. Sounds good and looks good in the air. This is my go-to EDF and worth every penny. Remember to calibrate your throttle before the first flight and like any twin, make sure both motors are running before take-off. It does not fly well on one motor. Ask me how I know!

great video, I have one that I have yet to setup and am looking forward to it. You mention that you didn't like how the stock elevators were not tracking the same and that the you had to put reflex into the ailerons, As a suggestion for a future video could you please cover how you setup some of those things as well as some of the details of how you align the dual elevators so they would be the same? I ask as setup is so crucial to having a good flying plane and I find that so many that I fly with do such a poor job of actually setting up their planes. I have been taking extra care with my newer, bigger planes but would love to see how others do it (in detail) as that's how I learn. great videos and thanks!

@janmb4 жыл бұрын
Regarding the elevator servos, also please be aware that the recommended CG is nose heavy to the point where it is actually directly dangerous in terms of the forces it puts on the elevator during flight. Aerodynamic calculus suggests the actual neutral point of the model is as much as 40 (!) mm aft of those marks, so one can very safely move back at least 10-20mm - and get a much lighter flying model that is far easier on the elevators at the same time. Other than that, the model flies brilliantly.
@Thercgeek4 жыл бұрын
One thing to keep in mind is that there’s a certain amount of personal preference when it comes to Cg. Some folks prefer a slightly more nose heavy airplane where others want a more neutral feel. I personally don’t like the feel of an overly neutral airplane and actually found the stock location to feel quite nice in the air and based on the batteries I used, couldn’t get it further back without adding weight to the tail anyhow. The elevator issue is more related to inadequate servos imo.
@janmb4 жыл бұрын
I understand and respect the idea that cg preference may vary. The point in this case though is that we (lots of people on rcg and squawk) have done a lot of research on this, and the elevator issues are directly tied to the degree of nose heaviness
@Thercgeek4 жыл бұрын
I’m with you and Yes, a more aft cg will reduce the load on the tail which in turn reduces the load at the servo. So that is one way to reduce the servo load. However, imo the issue here is not the cg placement, but rather it is inadequate and undersized servos. The servos are marginal at best for a model of this weight and size (even their replacements). My experience has been that the elevator servos are marginal in most of the larger FW jets.
@janmb4 жыл бұрын

Great review. I really enjoy mine as well. I also set up my ailerons with 25 mm throws. I had tried the setting in the manual but found it way too sensitive for me. Fortunately I had put in a lower rate flight mode that turned out be 25 mm and was much more comfortable, especially with a bit of expo thrown in. I pulled my CG back about 10 mm, but my elevator trim is also only about 3 mm right now. I'm still dialing all that in. Now I'm looking for a second set of batteries. I have 70C RT 5000s. I may go bigger with less C for the next pack so the weight is about the same. The 6250s are only 20g more so that may be a good option!

Excellent Review Chris, was kind of holding off on getting one with all the intense chatter on the elevator concerns but I think you make a good point with the servos that should certainly add some piece of mind, and your review may just have pushed me over to the buy side. I also think some, not all of the crashes, may have had something to do with signal loss and have been adding RF chokes and remote satellite RX's on all my EDF's lately and so far, so good. One question, did you "beef up" the elevator control rods at all? It also looked like Hitec D85's were a drop in fit, correct? Of course your AB's look outstanding and I wouldn't have an EDF without them (even those that are not "supposed" to have AB's). Did you line the nozzles with aluminum tape (which works great for mine)? Last question, oddly enough a couple passes in the video looked like the AB's were not on, then in another pass with a similar view on the rear end, they were bright as hell?
@Thercgeek4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I used the stock pushrods, but it wouldn’t hurt to replace those as well with a du-bro 4-40 setup. The d85s dropped right in and there’s a wires extension in there as well, so it made it really easy. On the burners, I painted some reflective silver paint in there. You could line with aluminum tape as well, just be sure it can’t lift up from the exhaust flow. I’ve had that happen on some other airplanes. Lastly, the burners I have setup to be on only at the very top of the throttle, so yeah there are a number of passes where the lights are off. I like to use them in a manner indicative to the full size, so they’re on only when I’m at full throttle.
@hughwiedman97114 жыл бұрын
@@Thercgeek When I put the aluminum tape in, I make sure it runs fore to aft in line with the thrust with the forward part starting well under the fan so there is no edge to lift off from the thrust.

@frank-vq4mx4 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris; Would there be any benefit in balancing the elevators ?
@Thercgeek4 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I think the best option is to just install some quality servos on the elevators. The stock ones are marginal at best imo (even their replacements). Mass balancing may help, but if they didn’t get the pivot in the right location, that means it’s not aerodynamically balanced which is a separate issue and will impart larger loads on the servo as a result regardless of mass balancing. I’m not saying they got it wrong, just noting that there are two things at play when we talk about balancing aero surfaces.

Heard you say you ended up put each elevator servo on a separate channel which would allow you to reverse one of them in the TX, no ?

What is the maximum speed ?
@Thercgeek2 жыл бұрын
I’m not 100% certain. As a guess, I’d say it’ll do about 120mph coming downhill.

Never mind my Arrows mig29 retracts for the F-14 comment ... this might work prettye much stronger than the one on the arrows.

I'm not sure the top speed. It's probably doing up to about 120mph as a guess.

Changing the servos will not make any difference ! The problems lies with the power supply. 5.0 volts is "not" enough. You will encounter an under voltage very quickly as the demand on the servos goes up. Just like when you need the elevators servos to pull you out of a dive !!!
@Thercgeek3 жыл бұрын
Well, it’s both servo torque and voltage. At 5v the d85s have higher torque than the stock servos. So that does take care of a good portion of it. If the bec is undersized, I haven’t personally experienced any kind of issues with it. The airplane has been rock solid for me.

Well, I understand the sentiment, but have you flown the model? That hasn’t been my experience or the experience of my friends with this model. The original elevator servos were insufficient for sure, but I swapped them out at the onset. For the price, you shouldn’t have to do that, but Generally my experience with the larger freewing models has been that the stock elevator servos are marginal, so I swap the elevator servos as standard normally. A small cost for added assurance and robustness in my mind.

Needs thrust vectoring or forget it!!!!!!! Not for that price!!!!! I have my LX models and can do EVERY maneuver the real one can. Flat spins, Cobra, you name it, I can do it if it's within 3 minutes. But it does so because of TV nozzles. How hard would it have been to do this? Not much more in cost either. In fact, in the same cost cause you buy in bulk. Sell more per month at a lower cost or sell less per month at a higher cost? Same thing, but reach more people and sell more parts as well. DUH!!!!!!!

From what I understand, they have a TV design mod in the works for this. That’s about all I know though.
