Greg Virgoe I have been trying to draw out a miter saw station. Having trouble figuring out how to get the legs at a 90 deg. angle to the table top. I'm sure it is something simple but I just haven't been able to get it yet.
@GregVirgoe7 жыл бұрын
chris fields, if you want the legs to be perfectly upright you can either draw the cross section in plan view and then use push pull to extrude it vertically. or, If you have already drawn a leg laying down on its side use the rotate tool to turn it upright and the move tool to position it. Like I did when laying out my cutting plan.

Hi Greg, I just found this vid after following your van conversion series I spent 30+ years using various CAD systems and now retired, will be taking a look at this software Autodesk had an Array command to copy a feature many times in both X & Y axis in one command You have explained it very well. Thanks. Nigel 👍🏻

I too come from an AutoCAD background having used it everyday for work. You’ll pick this up very quickly I would say. Hope you enjoy using it.
@yannkitson1166 жыл бұрын
Well I can't see how this is faster that Autocad Mechanical, from what I can see like Nigel mention it is lacking an array function, a fillet function, a reference from function, a tangent function, and a mirror function. If SketchUp doesn't have those functions it is worse than DraftSight (except DraftSight is only 2D), but I do see they have a Pro version for only 700 euro which a very good price, if the pro version is more extensive. I'll be looking into this too. Thanks for sharing :)

Thanks for the great video Greg. I've been using Sketchup for a while but hadn't used guide lines or the muticopy you use so am grateful for these useful tips. As for saving time on pushing all the holes through the top, I would have drawn to top and added all of the holes while it was still a 2D object. Once this is done you can pull it to 18mm thick and the holes are done.
@GregVirgoe7 жыл бұрын
Hi, pleased you found those useful. I still have a lot to learn myself but always good to share tips and tricks 👍🏼

Your tip for holes has given me an idea. If I had drawn the circles first and placed the rectangle around them it would not have filled the holes and then can pull up 😀

Greg - Nice tutorial. I've been wanting to do a SketchUp tutorial over on my channel for a while, but it's hard to know where to stop pointing out details. I could spend hours getting into axis lines, how to zoom, pan and orbit, etc. I think you found a nice middle-ground here. You give just enough information so people can see what you're doing, and then they can go find details on their own when they need to. Obviously other people have told you about the push/pull double-click, but I learned several things from you that I didn't know, even though I use SketchUp all the time (although I'm no expert by any means). I didn't know about the Offset tool, and somehow I had missed that you can use "x" to repeat something multiple times. What a great time saver! I guess it's time to watch some other SketchUp videos, to see what other cool things I totally missed. Anyway, great vid.

I try to give enough to get you going with something real. many videos talk about one tool until the death and you don't create anything meaningful. I love it as a presentation tool. you don't need much to make something very professional looking.

Hi Greg, I hope this is a bit quicker. After drawing your holes, push pull the first one to required depth or right through. Then using push pull tool double click each of the holes and they will repeat your first hole.
@GregVirgoe7 жыл бұрын
Dave Carpenter, thank you, that would be a bit quicker. Wish I could drill them that quick, it took ages yesterday lol
@davegower1237 жыл бұрын
Awesome tutorial!! As with others, it helped eased the fear of trying to learn new software. To "drill" your holes, draw the bottom of the board then the holes. After that use the pull tool to add thickness!
@Marcus_Caius6 жыл бұрын
What about you make the first hole than make it a component. Draw all the holes and then push down on any hole to make it a through hole. Since they are from the same components they should all go through. My guess.
@iceorbz6 жыл бұрын
I set a macro on my keyboard to the tilde ke, that simulates the double click. With my mouse, I could hover the item, tap the keyboard key and it will double-click the object.

hi greg! my approach to 'drill' the holes without a plugin is the following: -) make one complete hole (circle, then push/pull) -) make the hole a component (select the comlete hole by doubleclicking the circle, rightclick, make component - make sure to check 'replace selection with component') -) copy the components to the pattern you want as described in the video - you will still only see circles -) select all the components -) rightclick -> intersect faces -> with model (this generates independent faces in the circles) -) select all these faces and delete them (on both sides) maybe this way can still be optimized but maybe it is a bit faster... cheers
@GregVirgoe7 жыл бұрын
Totally understand what you have done there. Thank you for sharing this method. 👍🏼
@geoffreywinship85057 жыл бұрын
Greg, if you make the hole a component, then the actions you apply to one, will be repeated in the others. The procedure would be to make the top, then make a single circle. Make the circle a component, then copy it to the correct position, through repetition, as you did. Double-click one of the circles and that will isolate it. Now push the circle to the bottom, and then make the circle a hollow hole. Each of the other circles, based on the original will now also be a hole. Finally, copy your line of holes across the sheet, using the copy function and the repetition by typing X, as you did.

once you push-pull the first hole, immediately after that just start double clicking all the other holes! Double Click will work with all functions, meaning, if you push-pull 18mm, then you need only to double click the next thickness.. It also works with the move tool!

Many craftsman or Mobil office people can use a box van Cargo trailer and storage room for work and leisure. By installing 3/4" plywood to walls of van and trailer modular components office Paulk tool racks or modular rec vehicle . semi trucks use apu units and combo Murphy bed dining unit. A slide out unit in a box truck . I use a pack rat box for tools in my garage. A secure storage unit for electronics. My mini van was broke into and cost several $1,000. I learned a couple of things from your vid.....so how about I pay it back? Make your rectangle (without extruding to 18mm), THEN make your holes, THEN extrude your rectangle to 18mm. I find that when woodwork modelling in SU if you can extrude LAST it makes your workflow less er...exasperating and tedious. I reckon that I might use this smaller version (may even try copying mi rock's drilling/routing template). Really enjoyed your clear instructions too. Very often I find even some of SU's tutorials less clearer than they should be...! Sketchup Essentials is doing a woodworker's month of drawing/modelling too right now (no affiliation). Cheers from the SW of Australia.

(Just a theory, I have not tried it.) Could you orient the piece so that you are looking down at it parallel to the edges of your computer screen, and drag a rectangle selection over the top of the piece to include all of the holes, and then do something like a push pull while holding shift? Does that make sense? I am learning about sketchup today, so it is pretty much a shot in the dark.

Hi Dave, quick update, the Fred06 plugin did push them all at the same time :D but it would not reference to the other face and hence did not delete that to make a hole? Tried all variations of that tool. I found another Multiple Push Pull plugin but that also leaves the bottom face intact. One thing I did discover though is if you can double click a face and it repeats the previous push pull depth. You would still have to double click every hole but it was much faster. The search continues, Thanks

Yes Skipper, I would build it with 1/2" thick ply (12mm) as the 3/4" birch ply is very heavy to move about the workshop. Really pleased with the size though.

Near the end you copied 3 of the side panels instead of two and 2 end panels instead of 3, also the 3 end panels are to long by 36 mm( the thickness of two sheets) apart from that thumbs up and I'll go and download this now. Keep up the classes

Hello Brian, Yes, you are absolutely right I got the quantity of side and end panels mixed up. Well spotted. However, the lengths must be the same as the model because they are all the same component. If you look at the table the long sides run the full length and the ends are cut inside of these. Thank you for watching and I'll make sure I'm more diligent in future videos. Cheers

Wouldn't have ben quicker if you made the first top hole and then copy it as an object then make the rest.

Greg: Though this may be too late for your build, David Parfitt has a cracker-jack system for drilling standard 20 mm holes for a Festool work surface such as this. Check out the KZbin which is one of many demonstrating the system. The hole spacing will differ from yours and can be accommodated. This system from Axminister in England is available from Lee Valley in the States. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qYKtmYmDir6go7M
