Assertive Community Treatment, or ACT, is a way of delivering a full range of services to people who have been diagnosed with a serious mental illness. ACT's goal is to give consumers adequate community care and to help them have a life that isn't dominated by their mental illnesses. With ACT, consumers get help taking care of their basic needs-taking medications, getting up, and getting through the day. ACT teams work closely with consumers to see which medications work best for them. They help consumers find housing, apply for food stamps, go back to school, or get a job.
This film gives viewers basic information about the Supported Employment (SE) program, including the following:
Practice principles;
Practice philosophy and values;
Basic rationale for services; and
How the evidence-based practice has helped consumers and families.
English and Spanish versions of the Introductory Video are on the DVD in the KIT.
EBP KIT series
The Evidence Based Practices KIT series guides service providers, administrators, consumers and families towards a culturally-competent inclusive approach to behavioral health.
Target audience:
Mental health policymakers
Administrators
Funders

I am an ACT worker from the Detroit suburbs, and wanted to say that it's really great that this is up, so people can see how great ACT is- If you're a social worker, or in school to be- I would definately recommend it. Everyday is an adventure out in the community! Seeing clients in their own element is radically different than seeing them in an office. Also, you have the opportunity to anticipate crisis, rather than hear about it (days or weeks later) and then try to pick up the pieces.

"We don't fire people when they get too sick." That should be what mental health is based on- not giving up on people because you perceive them as a "lost cause." I've heard of both individual therapists and community mental health facilities abandoning patients who they view as "beyond help" (which nobody is) or just because they don't personally like them (which I cannot believe is legal), leaving those people to suffer with no place to go. Kudos to this program and the workers supporting it.

@@tegansmith9800 I was a PACT RN as well, until last month. I did it for 4 years. You go into dangerous situations by yourself quiet often. It can be rewarding work but also demanding and scary sometimes.

Pact seems to be helping these individuals in this video. I think it’s wonderful that there are programs for people with special needs.

Shaun King's piece in the The Intercept, published on September 29 2019, "If You Are Black and in a Mental Health Crisis, 911 Can Be a Death Sentence.": theintercept.com/2019/09/29/police-shootings-mental-health/ concisely and authoritatively speaks of the historic police brutality and killing of people who are alleged to have mental illness and especially of black and brown people. Assertive Community Treatment teams with their coordination, cooperation and integration with law enforcement, claim to be evidence based mental health protocol providers! If so, how can they justify the use of law enforcement in their treatment programs when faced with the indisputable facts and evidence of police brutality again the accused mentally ill. The answer to this question is obviously that assertive community treatment program's priority is first and foremost, law & order, and the mental and physical health best interest of their patient/clients are only an after thought. So, where is the evidence based treatment of assertive community treatment when counting all of the shot and killed alleged mentally ill by police? PS: The examples highlighted in this government film is cherry picking cases for propaganda purposes and is centainly not a true depiction of the broader experience with assertive community treatment!
