The BT3 was Jack Brabham and Ron Tauranac's first Formula 1 effort, following closely after the BT1 and BT2 Formula Junior cars. Tauranac took no risks, settling for reliability instead of speed, which would be a hallmark for the team for the rest of Jack's career.
The traditional space framed, steel tubed chassis housed a 1.5 liter Coventry Climax V8, like most British teams in the early 60's. As such, it fell into place with the BRM's and Coopers almost immediately. (The Lotus 25 debuted earlier in the season with its monocoque chassis, and was the class of the field when it occasionally finished.)
Engine troubles made a mockery of the BT3's debut at the Nurburgring in August, so Brabham returned to using the Lotus 24 for a few races until the US Grand Prix in October. With all the bugs fixed, Brabham qualified 5th and finished 4th, becoming the first driver in F1 history to score points in a car bearing his name. He then matched it in South Africa to finish the season.
It was common at the time for manufacturers to debut new cars around May of each year, so the BT3 was used in early 1963 by Brabham, winning two non championship races, before the BT7 was unveiled at Monaco, at which point the Brabham team became a two car operation, with Dan Gurney giving Brabham their first points victory ahead of Jack.
