I dont see a company developing a game and letting unregulated modders do there thing without being able to cash in to a certain extent.

I have the exact opposite view. The main attraction of games used to be the actual minute-to-minute gameplay. Now everything has to have some carrot on a stick mechanic. Some illusion of lasting value beyond the experience itself. Are you having fun? Keep playing. Are you not? Find something better, possibly actually meaningful to do. Also keep in mind that rankings and ladders inevitably bring countless cheaters, cord pullers and sore losers. As it is now people play because they want to have a good race. With an online progression system many will do so only to boost their account and unlock more stuff or brag about a high number. In a casual race you are an opponent. In a ranked game you are an enemy. Online strategy gaming is pretty much dead exactly because of this.

The fact that Ilja is making 42 grand a month from that one mod for a ten year old game just convinces me that a AAA driving sim would be a license to print money for any publisher who had the imagination to go all in on it. My idea is that a publisher partners with Fanatec or Logitech and makes a bundle that's aimed not at gamers but at drivers. Grown ups who like driving, like cars. The bundle comes with the game and with a wheel and pedal setup. They make a loss on the setup, so they keep the price fairly low, within the Rock Band area. And the game itself is a proper sim, maybe even uses Kunos's engine to run it, but with the kind of production values we've never seen, not even in a GT or Forza game; because it launches with only a handful of cars; say twenty or so? But each car is fully interactive inside and out; that means everything inside the cockpit is interactive as it would be in the real world. And each car is test-driven by real test drivers from the manufacturers. And you spec each car out as you would spec the car if you were buying it in the real world. Let's say you visit a real showroom for each car. And just as imnportantly, each car's engine and exhaust note sound files are orders of magnitude larger than those in other games. So the character of each car's sound is properly captured. No expense spared in other words, for the cars themselves, and it'd be possible for two reasons: one, they only ship with a small number of iconic modern and classic cars, each of which is a labour of love that's truly a one to one recreation, so the work goes on a small number of crazily detailed cars rather than a big number of basically detailed ones. And two...the part at the start, about a license to print money - the publishers can afford to poiur money into the car and make a loss on the bundle because each new car post-release is DLC, and since they market it to drivers rather than gamers they can charge a LOT more for a single car. I'm talking thirty to forty quid for one car*. That sounds nuts - but just think about it for a second. Imagine a car that you got to spec yourself as you would the real car. A car that is completely interactive inside, even down to the software the real car has on its screens, and which is modelled throughout with a precision unlike any other game ever made, and whose handling is developed in partner with the manufacturers of the real car, like Ferrari, or Koenigsegg, or whoever it is. And where the car sounds are captured to a fidelity and depth that is impossible in any modern game because there are simply too many of the cars for the devs to record. You might still not be prepared to pay that much for DLC but I am absolutely certain that if such a DLC car were available there would be people buying it in droves. There are crazily detailed DLCs of planes being made for certain flight sims and the publishers charge even more than thirty to forty quid for those. And the market for cool cars is vastly larger than it is for cool planes. Add to this idea a selection of the best driving roads from around the world; photogrammetised to high fidelity again. They could charge similar prices for the roads and get away with it. Give me a DLC T50 and a photogrammetised DLC Swiss Alps driving road and I'd pay silly money myself. Oh, and every DLC car would have a twenty minute test drive available. You know; 'the first pill's free' kind of thing. One day I'm taking this idea to a big publisher and going to make more money than god. *Honestly, this is being conservative. You could charge much more than that.
@Jim_AC11 ай бұрын
I’d say this would end being extremely niche. At current state, the sim hardware is already a big enough entry barrier. Many users are enjoying the game on controllers or even mouse/keyboard, their love for the game, cars, racing (or whatever the reason) is that high, but they simply can’t afford sim hardware. Now imagine telling those people they have to pay $50 or $100 for every road car, while with $300 they can already think about Direct Drive wheels. The thing you’re imagining is really a very different kind of beast (if you’re not trolling).
@thesprawl236111 ай бұрын
@@Jim_AC It's not a troll, but it is ambitious. What you say is all true. But my idea would be to market it less at gamers and more at drivers. People who already drive cars. You market it through completely different channels from the ones you see aimed at gamers. Top Gear Magazine, GQ, etc. Then you can begin to expand the game and turn it into a general purpose virtual testroom for actual manufacturers, so that eventually(a long way down the road) soccer moms can test drive their next horrible electric SUV in the virtual world. One of the little bonuses of this approach is that you sidestep the problem of adults who can't use controllers, and therefore wouldn't be able to control the car using a control pad. Instead, if you can drive then you can play the game. You just use wheel and pedals. I suggested this idea a while ago somewhere else, just as a flight of fancy, and someone pointed out that something like this approach is taken by the flight sim market, which is purely an enthusiast market. That's just planespotter/pilot nerds, and they're paying absurd figures for DLC. Now imagine folding that approach into the world of cars - and combining it with a manufacturer collaboration on each car, so that people felt completely secure that they were getting a truly 1 to 1 virtual replica. Then you can parlay that trust in the process so people start to take virtual test drives seriously, and instead of dreaming about a GT3 RS for five years, someone tries one out in-game as a free test drive, buys one out-right for fifty quid, then ends up getting that GT3 RS in real life. It's a kind of combination of simulation of and marketing tool for the actual cars in real life. And once you aim your product at actual drivers instead of gamers, the expectations for how much they're willing to spend on DLC rise dramatically.
@Kaucukovnik66610 ай бұрын
@@Jim_AC Yeah, the expensive hardware is the reason he can make so much. It's a drop in a sea of investments already made. Enthusiasts in general are willing to spend absurd amounts of money on their hobby compared to casuals. This is nothing commendable. In a way it's abusing peoples' ennthusiasm. And the fact that he's making that much is a joke in the face of every single controversy about big greedy publishers. Would anyone applaud the next Forza game not having a built-in weather system while offering a "Rain DLC"?
@Kaucukovnik66610 ай бұрын
@@thesprawl2361 Purely enthusiast my ass. For 40K a month I'd code a weather system for a game even if I hated the game AND coding. Especially if I could take all the time I wanted with no real obligations to speak of. Modders used to be happy they can customize their favorite games and share with others. These days almost everyone seems to feel entitled to be compensated for their hard, amateurish (and usually highly inefficient compared to pros) work on other peoples' property.
@thesprawl236110 ай бұрын
@@Kaucukovnik666 40k a month is ridiculous, but like I said it testifies to the amount people are willing to spend on simulated cars and the places they drive.
