The Zeltweg 1000 km was a very special race for several reasons. But the two most important were that it was the last race for the incredible Pedro Rodriguez who died a few days later in an accident while racing in Germany. The second reason was that this race was the last one on European soil where the 5-litre engines would be used due to the change in engine regulations for 1972.
During the past 24 Hours of Le Mans a lone Lola T70 Mk3 competed with the VDS Racing Team. And this was the car we chose for this race at the Osterreichring (Sunoco colors, didn´t have time to repaint). We thought we could go face to face with Porsche and Ferrari in a shorter track than La Sarthe, although in real life the T70 was far from them and it was already an old model in 1971. But guess what? It wasn't that bad at all and although we didn't fight for the win, we were able to maintain a good pace through the race.
