Great question! So again, and I apologize, this is going to depend on a number of things! Aside from the practitioners' training preferences, it will depends on the pathology, why they are intubated to begin with, how sedated they are, their own innate physiology etc. None is "indicated" per say, but SIMV for example doesn't do much if the patient is paralyzed for example.

what if the patient breathes 10bpm? will the ventilator add another 2 breaths?

How come when using AC mode on a passive circuit on the Trilogy 100, I can see varying tidal volumes on the screen even when a set Vt is programmed in?
