Sometimes you have to put mom or dad in a facility. They get 24/7 care but I strongly recommend that you visit frequently at different times, on all shifts, a few timesa week. Be their advocate and let it be known that they have someone who cares.

Guess mom/ dad should have just sent their squalling kids/ expensive kids to a children's home.

@@bettywhite8407I agree with both of you. The huge problem arises when an only “child” is left to care for 2 aging adults and hold a full time job. They may even be a single parent to minor children. Unless arrangements and research was done /made years in advance to make sure that home aides and things like that could pitch in to help, then you must be realistic and know that not everyone has a large and dependable FAMILY UNIT. I personally would do everything possible to make arrangements and do the research way ahead of time (before parents are of OLD AGE) if possible. Many people Don’t , are useless or wait till the last minute. Also some people reap what they sow. They were horrible parents aka ABSENT (usually dead beat or abusive fathers) and then come looking for their Childrens help when it’s too little too late. The kids can only do so much to help but they may not go above and beyond like the actual caretaking parent who wipes their bums and actually provided for them.

I've worked at a nursing home in the past and I now work at a senior living facility. I've been a CNA PCA RA and now I am a Med Tech. Well I can respectfully assure you that this is a very expensive business to be in. As much as they charge residents to live there I can say they could pay their employees better. Alot of things could be better. I thank God for good people that work in this business. We witness things people rarely see and I'd love to get the chance to speak on it 🙏

The pay is very poor especially for caregivers who break their backs to do this kind hard job. I worked at many assisted living facilities and hated my job. A dedicated coworker showed me her paycheck stub after a year working and she got a 21 cent raise. She eventually quit. I've seen very sick disabling elderly with extreme memory impairments, health issues, Dementia/Alzheimer's move into Assisted Living where they should never have been allowed to be admitted. It's profit over care. This is the reason why there has always been a shortage of staff cause no one wants to do this kind of work.

Yep, it's all part of Satan's unfair agenda here on Earth. But the reward for these compassionate people will be great in God's kingdom!

I personally work in a memory care and unfortunately they take on way to many people who need more medical care and what we can provide, sad thing is , it's all about profit :( not whats best for them .

This is BIG BUSINESS! They charge a bundle, and pay their staff low so there’s always a turn-over. Every thing is prorated; laundry, cleaning, showering, etc. They don’t take very good care of residents.

There are people that care in both type of systems, you only hear about the bad. There are kind caring people that do work in these places ,and we become part of their lives and sometimes,we are the only ones that show kindness because some families don't visit they drop them off and that is it. There are other families that visit all the time and are caring. Care workers do not get paid that much believe me! We get abused also and nothing is ever done about it ,until it is a higher up person in the chain of command then heaven and earth is moved. We still show up day after day to do the work families chose not to do or can't do.

I'm writing this comment super late, but maybe you or anyone reading this can help me figure this out. I used to live in California and was an able bodied woman with Spina bifida. I moved to Oklahoma and had surgery which caused paralysis from the waist down. I was forced to enter into a skilled nursing facility (nursing home) because my family are unable to care for me. I'm on Medicaid and am not privy to a lot of benefits because of my age (41) and because I did not work enough credits. I have been trying to get back to California to my friends and adopted family. My problem is nobody can or will take me in and I may need to be in another facility (I need help with some adls). I have asked for help in finding a new place near LA but no one here in OK knows what to do. Every facility I have tried (about 25) is unwilling to take me based on my age or because I have Oklahoma Medicaid and will not qualify for Medi-Cal until I get there. I just wanna go home. If anyone knows an administrator of a long term care facility, please let them know my story. Help me to get home.

Unfortunately these words are confused and it is often impossible to know what people are referring to. Sometimes I think "assisted living" is a way of avoiding saying "nursing home"

Yes CNA (certified nursing assistants) work mainly in nursing homes. They also can do home care or hospitals.

@@vyesheehy1325 CNA's have to pass both a written test and a skills test to become certified in the state they practice. This certification is through the state. There probably needs to be laws governing the ratio of patients to staff. Last LTC facility I was in each CNA had 14 patients, most being total care. Do the math.

I’m not sure how anyone can professionally speak on the difference in assisted living and long term care. We were taught years ago that it is not to be referred to as a nursing home. Now that I’ve had to return to working as a nurse, specifically a floor nurse I see the BIG difference is if the family has MONEY. Inside of both neither are getting the best care because of the ratios and high level acuity of care needed in both places. Policy at State level has to change.
