It should be noted that the developers kept using the assist in mind and made it an active game mechanic. So while using the assisted driving keeps you on track, it prevents you from activating the purple level three drift boost. While unassisted drivers are able to use short cuts and get faster, they are also more prone to being able to fall off the track!
